I know it sounds basic but where and the range from you and the enemy can also get you killed so I felt it would be good to post. By the way I get killed a lot too.

Control scheme shouldn't matter, once you get used to it... people of these generations grew up with computers and video games, whatever you use will become second nature.
What you should learn is enemy attack pattern.
1. How often they attack
Enemies only perform one attack so often - different enemies have a different frequency. Other times they'd be seeking a target, moving or chilling about. If you know how often they attacks, you know when it's safe to attack them.
Enemies in higher tiers will attack more often.
2. What attacks they possess
You should observe and remember their attack preparation animation, so you know at once what attacks they will use, and dodge/block accordingly.
Enemies in higher tiers have more types of attacks.
3. How they decide which move to use
Enemy AI can be observed, then exploited. They chase after the knight who dealt them the most damage, and if there is no such a target, they will go after the nearest knight. The distance between them and the target decide what they will do. If you find out how they will react, you can lure them to do a certain attack and make them miss, then you can counter attack.
