Treasure box mimics.

As they are now, Treasure boxes are....dull. You could maybe get a bunch of crowns, or even an item from one, but they're nothing special. Just sources of loot.

I propose a new type of enemy: treasure box mimics.

There will be three varieties: Green Jelly mimics, Green Construct mimics and Red Fiend mimics. They'll look similar to normal boxes (with subtle differences) and can spawn in the place of any given Treasure box, perhaps with 1/4th chance a Stone Block has of becoming a Rock Jelly.

Since I lack artistic capability, I'll give you a reference picture, taken from the game Dark Souls.
http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120118034615/darksouls/images/4/...

In Dark Souls, Mimic chests look slightly different than standard fare loot chests (a chain next to them is turned the opposite way). Attempting to open one of them would result in your character being eaten alive by the mimic. Kicking or attacking the mimic would cause it to grow legs and arms and open its mouth, trying to turn your Lost Undead into its next snack.

Mimics, like Drones and Battlepods, take neutral damage from every source, to not mercilessly screw anyone who encounters them. Mimics of both varieties also drop a lot of hearts, enough to patch you up a scaled amount. This amount will be three hearts in T1, seven in T2, and 10 in T3.

I'll extrapolate on this later, but these are what I have now:

Green mimic: Spawns in place of a Green Treasure box. Attacking it causes the mimic to sprout thorns and rush your knight, much like a giant lichen colony. Health would be 4 times that of a normal Giant colony, and killing it would yield a large amount of crowns, heat, and other fun stuff.

Other Green mimic: Spawns in place of a Green Treasure box. Attacking it causes the mimic to transform, Transformer style, into a Scuttlebot. The Mimic has three primary attacks: Strong Retrode laser (think Five star Brand), chopping anything that gets too close with rotating blades, like Hyneman's Blendo, and at low health, shutting in and regenerating, akin to a Gremlin Mender. While regenerating, beating on the mimic will wear down the shield, and possibly break it if enough damage is dealt. Yields same amount of loot as Green Jely mimic.

Red mimic: Spawns in place of a Red Treasure box. Attacking it causes the box to grow legs, arms and a curse eye. Attacks with zombie swipes, firing shadow projectiles from its eye (Think Devilites), and at low health attempting to grapple and eat whatever's in front of it. Mimic will also be highly evasive, dodging left to right randomly. Will have 4x the health of a similarly tiered Trojan, and on death yields a truly massive crown yield (4-10 Gold Coins) or in extremely rare cases, an item.

This sounds pretty cool,

This sounds pretty cool, though the red guys payout seems a little bit high, maybe 3-6 gold coins would be better?

@Gingermace

These mimics are meant to be incredibly difficult miniboss enemies that offer substantial rewards. But yeah, bosses themselves don't drop much aside from their gems.

Perhaps a special type of token? Or they could drop several spark tokens.

Thanks for the support thus far, I still need to think of ways to make the red ones harder.

Wouldnt it be better if they were resistant to everything but normal, like vana's mask? Or just neutral.
That way they have equal difficulty on any level. Else, it'll depend on wich weapons you had equipped for that run.

Yes. YES. I love this. I LOVE THIS IDEA! Fake Treasure boxes are a staple in gaming, and would be an excellent addition.

Debating whether or not they should appear in Treasure Vaults, Aftermath, and rooms after Boss fights. Otherwise, UNLEASH THE ONSLAUGHT.

ISB's gonna shock you, Doctor!

Its like a rock Jelleh. Spawn anytime you go for a box... Just finished UFSC? Slaughtered Vana? Down to one pip left? Hoping for that chance at a Capsule lurking in those red boxes?

OOOP! Too bad, a box just shot a Eye Beam at you.

BWAHAHAHAHAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!

@Tsu: Exactly my point. Might be just a bit cruel in SLs after a boss... which might be what we're going for. Of course, they could just use the heart pads... I'm assuming there's heart pads.

@Tsu's title: I really must make an ISB some time for LD. It would be so funny to watch.

@Tsu's pic: She needs to check in with the eye doctor some time. Shooting lasers out of your eye might really cause damage to your retina.

Doctor, calm down! Its just a shard based defibrillator.

That laser was caused by God. No need to freak out. Yet.

And Psycho? Those would fit nicely with the Nendoroid style.

Also mimics for crystals too

Crystal rooms are boring also, sometimes you need some crystal munchers, or gremlins mining them, or even crystal beasts mimicing crystal outcrops!

I really like the idea.

I agree with Rikku though that mimic might be better as sort of a new type of drones, without damage vulnerability and resistance.

Also I suppose both type of boxes could share the same animation and attacks (it would be easier to implement that way), just red boxes being tougher, cause random status on hit or whatnot. Limitation of the game must be considered after all.

That'd be nice. Kind of

That'd be nice. Kind of reminds me of my idea to make love puppies spawn in place of heart boxes on occasion.

If they did do it, I'd like to see the new boxes have a good chance item in them....

I'd like to see these 'mimics' act kind of like drones, and move around depending on the nearest player's actions. If the player is standing still or attacking, the box is down making it invulnerable to damage. If the players is turned away at any real angle, or in the rest position after an attack, it will get up and move a bit, towards the player. Its movements would be similar to a drones, but it would have no real boundary (as it would be a random spawn). Its attack would be to flare out the sides of the box a bit, and reveal a kind of blackness inside, like inside of the knight. This attack would be like the jelly attack rotating attack, but would also have the giant lichen colony's set of spikes shoot out (just not in all directions).

And there death sequence must shoot a massive amount of confetti and jelly blobs everywhere.

You could be a real jerk and

You could be a real jerk and have Heart Box mimics as well. I'm not sure how powerful they'd be compared to the other two mimics, though.
