Hey guys, could somebody give me tips on optimizing fps and lag on a Mac lion when playing spiral knights, especially Lock down?? I'm already using low settings including compatibility mode and vertical sinc. I notice that I get periodical spikes and choppiness.. I'd like to see some more smooth game play for that reason :[
Using mac lion.. LD performance
If you haven't realised yet, MACs have pretty much the worst cost/benefit when it comes to computers. Seriously, you could pretty much buy TWO computers with the same price (if you buy it in separate components, not a Alienware prebuit) with the same money you would spend on a MAC, and STILL have the same, if not better perfomance.
And since MACs are pretty much unupgradable, you have to pretty much deal with the slowdown.
It might be your internet connection since I play on high-detail and use mac lion and have no issues. If your hardware is out of date you can always go to the apple store and have it updated. Don't worry the kids using Pc will always be jelly king over macs since they are elite.
Perhaps for gaming, but for other stuff, macs are fantastic.
Macs are nothing but just ordinary computers with shiny cases and a apple for a logo. There's nothing of fantastic on what it can do that a PC can't, except mabe attract some attencion among other people, but I don't think that's worth the ridiculous price that Apple applies to them.
Here's a pic to explain better what I'm saying:

THats about how I feel, Deltikon...
I still need to get the stuff to build a nice PC atm....
I'm not sure the "Mac v PC" debate is going to help the OP at all, so maybe we should save that for another topic/forum.
@Tmdals, can you provide some more details about your Mac? What model is it, processor speed, RAM, etc. (check your system profile)? Lion is just the OS.
Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256 MB
Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11E53)
What method are you using to play spiral knights? I play on a mac too (though you're specs are higher than mine), and of the several ways to play, I find some perform better than others.
I've found (for me) the dl client works best, followed by internet browser (like kong) and then steam functions the worst, esp for pvp.
If you're not playing in safari, (or firefox) make sure you quit out of the browsers and not just closed a window, you can usually get a little better fps when they're not open.
Oh, the teir you're queueing for can also make a difference cuz of level effects and such. You may want to try gearing queueing for a lower teir and see if that helps too.
I'm sorry, I know it's not helpful, I just have to defend my platform.
The appeal of macs is not that they have much more processing power than a comparable PC (though in my experience, they usually do). The appeal is that the interface just... makes sense. It's so much simpler to use than a PC, and the interface is organized much more logically. In addition, Apple provides excellent software (free with your purchase) and constant support in the form of consistent software updates, being nigh-impervious to viruses/malware, and the best customer support system I have ever seen.
As far as the price goes, I think it's important to consider the fact that Macs have a useful lifespan of about 2-3 times that of a comparable PC. In addition, as I mentioned above, when you buy a Mac, you basically get a lifetime warranty thanks to Apple's unofficial "we're awesome" policy.
In addition, Macs are most certainly upgradeable, I have no idea what you're talking about and suspect you don't have much experience with them.
Ugh, ignore the noobs/trolls talking about the endless Mac vs PC.
Anyway, you should try the extra.txt trick, basically this allows to SK to use more resources (especially RAM) than usually does. Locate your your SK folder an paste the file (Mac experimental, i guess), I have a PC and the Very High profile worked really well on my PC (i7 920 - 6GB ram - AMD 5770).
I must say I don't have a mac to test those, in windows works, but if you encounter troubles with this trick just delete the extra.txt file to get back to the starting point.
So.. all i have to do is take this "extra.txt", save as textedit,, and drop it in the SK folder???
edit: I play on steam.. is there a way to make it so that steam doesn't slow down my SK?>?? Maybe tweaking steam settings?
yes that is all you have to do. I did try that when i was having the same issues with IMF and it did make the lag worse, I did not try it for LD though.
" I did try that when i was having the same issues with IMF and it did make the lag worse" you mean it made it better? or did the extra.txt actually made the lag worse?
Turn off vsync, vsync will lower you framerate further, compatibility mode doesn't add to performance. Check Cull transients too but to be honest, there is no real way for you to get better performance without upgrading hardware.
