Hey, I'm currently aiming towards a set composed of: Snarbolax Cap + Nameless Poncho + Barbarous Thorn Shield.
But because the Snarbolax Cap is so hard to obtain, I'm thinking of changing my set for Vog Cub Cap + Shadowsun Slicker with the same shield.
Is it a smart move or should I stay on the same path?
Need help to choose the right set
Well, you guessed right. I only have two weapon slots: the Leviathan Blade and the Strike Needle.
So, if I understood right, I should in fact get both sets? Seems even more expensive then just buying the Snarbolax Cap at the AH.
You'll eventually want more than just one set. At least one for each damage type.
But I think the Vog Cub/ Shadowsun is a better combo as it comes with fire resist, handy for FSC.
The following figures hold when CE costs 8,000 crowns per 100 CE, which is pretty close to recent prices.
* Crafting one 5-star item from scratch costs 164,900 crowns plus materials. This includes the cost of the recipes. But you don't need the recipe for crafting a Snarbolax item, so the cost is more like 140,000. (Plus the cost of the Shadow Lair itself. It's hard to account for that, because it has tremendous entertainment value.)
* Unbinding a 5-star item costs 4,000 CE, which costs 320,000 crowns. So, even if we assume that the seller is selling without any profit, buying a Snarbolax piece unbound costs much more than making it yourself. (Here's a rule of thumb: Never buy unbound items.)
I'm not proposing that you get both sets. I'm proposing that you get Vog Cub and Shadowsun. Then, you keep playing Spiral Knights. As you play, you slowly accumulate wealth, get bored with what you have, and start looking for new equipment. At that point, you may reconsider Snarbolax armor, with all other armors. I'm just saying that eventually everyone either (A) quits the game or (B) becomes a collector.

Thanks guys, really appreciate it. But, if I do reconsider doing a Shadow Lair, will the Vog Cub and Shadowsun be any useful? (The Snarbolax one, of course)
PS: Nice guide, Bopp! Really helpful.
Read the wiki article "Shadow Lair" for brief tips on how to equip for each Shadow Lair. For SGWW, you want normal, piercing, shadow, and poison armor. So Shadowsun is great, but Vog Cub is not. Skolver with Shadowsun would be pretty good for SGWW, but not for FSC.
I guess my recommendation is that you get Vog Cub and Shadowsun. Later, get Skolver, and wear it into the SGWW, and get your Snarbolax. Yes, this will take a while. Shadow Lairs are not for people who are short on resources; attempt them only when you are farther along in your career. For the Ice Queen, you'll probably want not one but two pieces of Skolver (or maybe Justifier). Or maybe you're good enough to make it through with non-ideal stuff; I don't know you or your pals.
I'm glad that you've found this advice helpful. Cheers.
You haven't told us the most important information: How many weapon slots do you use, and what kinds of weapons (sword, gun, or bomb) do you put in them? Even better, specifically which swords, guns, and bombs?
You seem to be going for a mixed sworder+gunner offense with a mixed elemental+shadow defense. That's not a bad idea. Getting Snarbolax is either really hard (you basically need other high-power armor, to survive the Shadow Lair) or really expensive (if you buy it unbound from someone). So get Vog Cub and Shadowsun, and get Snarbolax later.
Barbarous Thorn Shield is of course great for sword offense. If you find your shield breaking a lot, then consider a more defensive shield, such as Grey Owlite, Crest of Almire, Volcanic Plate Shield, etc.
