Want to deal heavy surprise damage? Bring swords (whatever you're good with, really)
Want to hold points? Bring bombs (shock/stun work vs most people, vortex works well vs aggressive strikers)
Want to have mobility and be able to use deathmark? Bring a mobile gun (alchemers, valiance, pulsar lines)
IMO, recon should be good with all 3 weapons. It naturally favors guns and bombs (lvl 10 bombs are given max CTR, guns are given some CTR and ASI, which lets them switch weapons faster - take this piece of knowledge as you will), but good footwork and ASI can make swords very formbidable to use. Recon is really fragile without shield, so having a gun can make it more bearable (you're way more mobile with a gun than a sword even without having to use shield), and it greatly opens your movement and attack options, which is HIGHLY valuable for recon, where being predictable is both dangerous and common.
Bombastic demo suit and helm, Penta heart (+6) pendant and elite boom module, RSS and Voltaic Tempest (having Stagger Storm as a backup plan isn't bad either). Go forth and have fun! Max damage, max ctr, health boost, and fairly immune to getting frozen in place.
Most Recon Bombers I know of go Mercurial Demo actually, for the Shock Immunity.
I bring the following to my T3 Matches as a swording recon.
ASI Med Gran faust
ASI Med Final Flourish
CTR Med Acheron
ASI Low Sentenza
Vog Cub Cap
Skolver Coat
2x Penta-Heart Trinkets
The following loadout gives this total layout:
ASI High on GF, FF, and Sentenza, CTR Max on Acheron, Damage Bonus Medium, +12 extra health
Xair is one of the best recons, you should follow her lead :)
If you want to make the other team hate you, and your team love you.
Get a Stagger Storm or Voltaic Tempest. Recon's naturally get CTR Max on fully heated bombs, so no need for bomber gear or UVs with mist bombs. Spread those around capture points or choke points and it'll really help your team out, giving your guys lots of space, and the other team limited space to move around in.
Tier?
But also really, just look at this thread: http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/55095
determine which style of recon you want to play as and use the gear that people there are talking about.
