Shields resistances?
so ive noticed from equipping and uneqipping shields that they do not increase or decrease your protection against anything (tried with proto and swift shields) while equipping diffrent helms and armor dose change those numbers....
Im not sure if this is intentional or not, so im not sure if this is a bug (or have been previously reported as there is no search function on the forums (or i have yet to find one))....
So dose anyone know if the values actually increase your resistances to damage? Or are they there to show something else? (i also dont notice a attack speed increase "ultra"... but thats prolly cuz im using a cutter =_=)
thats odd tho because when you push P while defending (unless theres another button to activly use the sheild) the numbers dont change, and even with the proto shield you still wont take damage unless it breaks.... so dose this means the only time you see the shield reduce damage is when it breaks?
I don't understand the question. Obviously the numbers on the character screen don't represent your current defenses, but the defense values of your armor and helm added together. In other words it's not possible to get the defense values of your shield by looking at the character screen.
On this note, though, I noticed that my Rock Jelly Shield (which has a penalty to poison resist) can block poison from brambles every time, while I get poisoned instantly upon touching them unshielded. Although, the poison brambles seem kind of glitchy now, so it's probably unrelated.

That's exactly what im talking about armor pieces add together to show your defense in a numerable value instead of bars as listed on the item itself
I tested your theory to see if it would show up on the status screen (as when you hold defend in a dungeon and go into your character screen, you do not stop defending) and no it dose not increase the numbers when you are defending either
to clarify... my initial question was "what do the bars for the shields represent?"
My confusion comes from this
Dose not change your defense values in the stat screens
Reduces all incoming damage to 0, no matter how low tier the shield is
This further confuses me as to what the values on the shield items actually represent
I am also confused as to how shields work now.
I thought that shields absorbed an amount of damage according to their resistances, and then broke.
But if a shield has 0 resistance to everything except normal, why does it completely block an elemental/shadow attack without even getting fully broken?

Shields have defense and health, just like a player. When a shield blocks, any damage that gets past its defense degrades its health, which regens over time. Once a shield reaches 0 health it breaks. So even if the shield has no defense against a certain damage type, it still has a wall of health that can absorb the damage. Obviously if the shield does have the right defense less damage gets through, taking more hits before breaking.
How much health? Do all shields have the same amount?

Currently all shields have a set amount per star value. I don't know what they are off hand, and I'm also not sure we'll actually display that stat. If we find that they have varying health values within star values we'll probably add a health meter to the shield tool tip.
that makes sense... thank you for the clarification
A shield only increases your defense while you're actively using it. Having it equipped does not add anything (except possibly the bonuses it might give).
