(We've breached the first page perimeter!)

(Excuse the (zillionth) long hiatus. I really should start doing shorter updates, with more frequency. Like this one!)

"This is it?"

Vilkus nodded. "That's the false wall. Watch out for the treasure boxes, they're fake."

"We don't have time to pick up treasure anyway. You guys still got that Beam Torch?"

"Sure do!" Algrim examined the wall; the hole they cut in it had been blocked by a large slab of metal. Algrim proceeded to cut a larger hole in the wall, so even the Giant Lichen Colony could squeeze through.

"Watch out, Vinno. Some of these fools wield tiny rods with pink crystals on them. They and their wielders are puny! But the rods can turn people into statues. If you see one, break their rod as soon as possible!"

"Thanks, Arkady." Vinno had his Valiance out and ready. Leading the way into the base, he crept forward, Milyn's strange green Oiler following him. "That... is that a Toxoil?"

"I think so. It's got poisonous qualities as well as the usual flame capabilities. And it sure loves Nightshade."

Vinno spotted the treasure boxes. "Fake, right?"

"Right. Absolutely fake." Algrim growled at the boxes. "And I hate them so much."

Dusty poked his head slowly around a corner, then let out a low whine. Milyn lifted her Supernovas. "Enemies ahead. Standard maneuvers, Arkady."

"Right." Arkady leapt out from behind the corner and roared, "I BREAK YOUR HIDDEN BLADES! I BREAK THEM IN TINY BITS!"

Three Dire Wolver assassins with Striker Boosters quickly began to circle Arkady, only to be slammed by a storm of gunfire, spines, and Chroma saliva. One was immediately finished off by Algrim's Final Flourish, and another was taken down by Vinno's well-timed Valiance charge. The third was unlucky enough to get mashed between Arkady's Jalovec and Khorovod. Vilkus shuddered a little. "Now that's a painful way to go."

Murderous Cloak assassins deactivated Recon Cloaks to strike from the darkness; however, at Vilkus's signal, everyone ducked, except for Milyn's spiked Lichens; these unleashed their spin attacks, flinging spines every which way and leaving behind many very dead Hidden Blade assassins.

"Very good! To the victors go the spoils..." Algrim looted one of the assassins as quickly as he could, grabbing about five hundred crowns from the corpse.

"Algrim! We have a high priority mission. Steal from the dead on your own time."

"Bah."

"Okay, we can tell they were prepared for us. I'll sneak ahead." Vinno used the fake treasure boxes and path blocks as cover, going quickly from one to another. Soon enough, he spotted three Shadowsun gunslingers and two Chilling Howlitzers behind sandbags and barb wire.

Vinno relayed this to the team, and soon enough, Ash Tails and Voltails came up behind the embankment; the Alphas attacked the Howlitzers while the rest of the pack tore into the surprised gunslingers. The pack made short work of them, and Supernova bullets destroyed the Howlitzer heads before they could cause any damage.

The wolvers rushed back to the main group just as a mob of eight Dire Wolver strikers ran into the room. Arkady leapt out, roared at them, and brandished his swords; when the Strikers ran toward him and began to swing their Dark Matter Hammers, Arkady merely jumped backward, swinging his Khorovod to block an incoming hammer from behind. Then Vinno rolled a Cloud Nine out from behind a block; the mist caused the assassins to fall to the ground, snoozing. Algrim wasted no time in disarming them, tossing the hammers over the side and taking the Strike Boosters (and a good thousand crowns) for himself.

"All right, Vilk. We'll have to hurry up and find that Dirtech tank!"

"Right. Do we have any readings?"

Milyn checked her comlink. "There's a large energy reading at 122 degrees from our left. Scanners are going nuts... they're projecting a critical mass within twenty minutes."

"All right. The off switch is on the tank?"

"Yep."

"And physical force will deactivate the thing?"

"Yep. Bosco sent me a message as we were going into Emberlight... the switch is a failsafe he installed, in case someone were to remotely commandeer S.T.U.R.M. and try to fire on us. If it weren't for that, our only option would be to destroy the Firotech tank, which would take too long to possibly do safely."

"All right." Vinno twirled his Valiance once. "I guess I'll sneak in and shut it off."

Vilkus shook his head. "It's likely heavily guarded. You could be spotted and killed."

"That's a risk I'll have to take. If I hit my emergency button, I've been spotted and need to be bailed out; if I hit the alert button, I need a distraction to safely snipe the button. Got it?"

Arkady nodded. "You Gremlins are braver than I expected! It does not matter where we are from. We are brothers in arms, so I have your back!"

"He speaks for all of us. Right, Algrim?"

"Right, right. You guys do the distraction, and I keep watch over the exit. Sounds about right."

Vilkus rolled his eyes. "Algrim!"

"Hey, don't worry. I'll do whatever you say, Vilk."

(My poor, poor mouth.)

(I had my wisdom teeth removed today. My mouth has a heartbeat.

Not that that's going to stop me from updating today!)

Vinno looked to the left, then to the right. Nobody on the walls. Vinno continued on; it wasn't far now.

There! Up ahead, there was a large sillhouette. Vinno used the wall blocks to hide himself while he snuck forward, carefully avoiding beds of spikes.

"Status report, Vilk?"

"We're holding out well. Nothing's getting through! Another one with a magic rod came by, but one look at my Aegis and he bolted." The sound of Wolvers mauling something filled the air, then Vilkus added, "And I think Dusty just found him. You, Vinno?"

"I see the tank. Let me do a little more recon."

Vinno peered around the corner. Watching the entrance were three big, tough-looking Hidden Blade members in jet-black Plate Armor that had a sinister, deathly aura. Vinno decided he'd call them "Death Knights". The Death Knights were wielding large spears that looked like the kind a Cursed Deadnaught held as well as massive black plate shields with glowing pink eyes. Behind the Death Knights was a tech team that was trying to remove the locks on the Dirtech tank; even these guys were armed with Devil-IT augmented Volt Drivers and a total of four Rocket Puppy sentries. The tank itself was massive, more so than the Firotech tanks; this tank had a large nozzle at one end, theoretically to load energy into S.T.U.R.M.

"Three really big Knights guarding it. Plus some Rocket Puppies and the tech team. Is the switch on the side or directly opposite the tank's nozzle?"

"There's actually three switches." It was Bosco's voice. "Two on opposite sides of the barrel and one opposite the nozzle. Do you see one?"

"Bosco!" It was Milyn. "You're helping us out?"

"Just for a bit. Gotta get back to watching the cameras- Tucker, Desna, Locke, and Stocke are about to launch a surprise attack on the Hidden Blade in HQ, with Venton's approval. Vinno, do you see the switch from where you are?"

Vinno took another look. The barrel-side switches were on the top and bottom of the barrel, relative to the ground. It'd be a hard shot, especially considering that one shot would alert the Death Knights. "Yes, but it's a risky shot. I'll have to get closer."

"Can you?"

"Yes." Vinno looked back at the Death Knights. Their black Plate Armor was still Plate Armor. They'd probably be weak to Cloud Nine. Vinno strapped his Royal Jelly Shield to his back, then began charging a Cloud Nine in his left hand. Once it finished, he quietly rolled it toward the Death Knights from behind the block, then charged another one.

About a moment before the explosion, one of the Knights noticed the bomb, but it exploded before he could react. All three fell into a deep slumber, and the first began to fall over.

Vinno rolled forward and kept the Knight from falling over and making a clunk; instead, he slowly propped them all up. Then he crept behind the block again.

Vinno snuck another glance around. The tech team was shouting at each other, the tank was making an audible hum, and the Rocket Puppies were as quiet as ever. Vinno could see the third emergency switch; one hit would disable the firing process, but he needed a better shot. Vinno dropped another Cloud Nine to keep the Death Knights asleep, ensuring they weren't directly in the center of the blast, then looked again. Each Rocket Puppy was facing a different direction, turning slowly in a 90-degree arc. Vinno waited for his opportunity; when the Rocket Puppy turned its head as far as it could, Vinno vaulted over the block wall, lifted his Valiance, aimed, and fired.

The bullet struck the switch right on the spot; the Dirtech tank began to power down. Cries of anger came from the tech team, and a few began pointing at Vinno; Vinno himself was pulling out his Dread Venom Striker to make one last move. He took the sword and swung it at a Death Knight's leg.

It bounced right off, and woke the Knight up. Vinno's mouth dropped open. They were practically immune to the Dread Venom Striker!

The Knight reached for his spear; Vinno wasted no time in fleeing, the Royal Jelly Shield deflecting an incoming rocket. He hit the comlink and shouted, "Got the switch! How much time did that buy us?"

Algrim cheered. "WOOO! Bosco said it'd earn us a whole day! That's the minimum the switch can be off without Bosco's code. You got somethin' on your tail?"

"Three really well-armored knights in some sort of sinister jet-black Plate Armor. DVS didn't even scratch their leg armor. I'm calling 'em Death Knights."

"Good to know. The new HQ will be relatively unprepared; it'll need combat data on the Hidden Blade's stuff. I'm going to call the Guard Chief now... we've got time to aim our entire army at the Hidden Blade base."

"Any word from Nonna and Petro-" Vinno felt something hit his back, a thrown Death Knight spear. The Royal Jelly shield took the blow, but Vinno felt a strange, unnatural force wrap around a lot of his gear, and a devilish cackle could be heard from somewhere... "Blast! Guys, I'm Curs- URGH!"

Vinno felt a sharp pain. Wincing, he looked at his comlink; it too was cursed, as was his Shield. Some Remedy Capsules and Health Capsules he'd picked up, as well as all of his weapons- the Dread Venom Striker, Valiance, Cloud Nine, Stagger Storm, and even the Beam Torch, were also cursed. He shut off the Comlink, spotting a Giant Lichen Colony unleashing its Thorn Root attack.

"Vinno! It seems some little rat cursed you!" Arkady lifted his swords. "Where is the fool that did so? He is not long for Cradle!"

"Back there. The curse hit everything I've got, even the Comlink. It's really potent."

Algrim pulled something out of Vilkus's shield. "Ha! Looks like they lost this spear! Wonder what this sells for..." Algrim heard a strange, ominous voice in his head, then rolled his eyes. "Ah, forget it. Morons don't know what an anti-shadow override is." Algrim tossed the spear over the side of the Clockworks. "Good riddance!"

"Watch out. There's more where that one came from. Three of them total. They're slow runners 'cause of their Plate. But nothing will push them and they've got massive defense."

Vilkus nodded. "Then we should use their speed against them. How did you pass them in the first place?"

"Cloud Nine." The sound of clanking armor came from farther back in the tunnel.

"Good. Milyn! We're going to use... that move."

Milyn nodded, and motioned to the Giant Lichen Colony. It still had a saddle that Milyn rode it on, but now Vinno noticed something else: a collapsible ballista that Milyn was assembling in a matter of seconds. Vinno, seeing what the plan was, charged another Cloud Nine, ignoring the Curse, and passed it to Milyn as she pulled the ballista's string back. Vilkus and Algrim also passed a Cloud Nine.

The Death Knights came around the corner, one of them wielding an Acheron to replace his thrown spear. Vinno grimaced... then grinned as the ballista fired. The three bombs fired at breakneck speed and struck the Death Knights head-on, exploding on impact. In addition to the Elemental damage hitting through some of their defense, the explosions, of course, had them snoring before they could even toss their spears.

"YES! That's more like it!" Vinno fell to the ground. "Urgh... I'm hurt, though. You guys mind covering me?"

Vilkus nodded. "Blasted Curse. Milyn, do you see anything up there?"

Milyn looked around from atop the Giant Lichen Colony. "Argh! More of those annoying Gunners! Hang on a second..." Milyn made a single motion, and Vinno watched as, to his left, five Shadowsun gunslingers began screaming in pain from Wolver bites.

Algrim, meanwhile, was looking at the Death Knights. "Heh. First to make them sitting ducks..." Algrim dropped another Cloud Nine while taking every weapon they had, scanning the weapons with his own comlink, and then chucking them off the Clockworks. "Very good. Now, Vinno, I believe you get the lion's share of their cash... ooh, look at all this Shadow Steel! Heh, fighting these guys makes us rich...

"It is done, Fearsome Lightning. The suffering Knights are healed of their wounds and the Howlitzers are banished."

Petrode nodded. The Cottonwing looked as if it was mourning... no doubt, it was because of all the death around it. While the Silkwings relished death and suffering, and healed monsters to aid in causing it, Cottonwings felt only sorrow at the pain of others, even if it was deserved. Petrode pointed at the next floor up, Depth 17. "I HAVE RECEIVED WORD FROM NONNA THAT THE SUPERWEAPON STOLEN BY THE HIDDEN BLADE HAS BEEN DISABLED. I WAS WORRIED YOU WOULD NOT RETURN IN TIME FOR ME TO WARN YOU, BUT IT IS A MOOT POINT NOW."

"That is good. How did you know Emberlight would survive, though?"

Petrode turned for a second, blasting a sneaking Hidden Blade Recon with a flash beam so the Emberlighter tanks could take him down. "SOME OF THE OUTCASTS ARE TOO AFRAID TO TAKE UP ARMS AGAINST THE MIGHT OF TINKINZAR. BUT NOT ALL OF THEM. I ONCE THOUGHT ALL GREMLINS WERE DOOMED TO SLAVERY UNDER THE SWARM AFTER TINKINZAR'S TREACHERY, BUT NONNA HAS SHOWN ME OTHERWISE."

The Cottonwing nodded slowly. "Was Nonna the first Outcast you met?"

"YES. IT WAS NONNA WHO FOUND ME, UNABLE TO MOVE AND AT THE END OF MY ROPE, IN THE UNKNOWN PASSAGE. SHE REPAIRED MY BODY ON THE SPOT, AND WE ESCAPED DANGER TOGETHER." Petrode lifted his arm. "MANY OF THE INFECTED WERE FREED THAT DAY."

"It is good. Even now, one of the Seven Guardians is still a friend to the upright. Fearsome Lightning, you know the Gear Sage, Brinnan?"

"YES. I KNOW OF BRINNAN. DID HE DIE IN BATTLE, OR OF OLD AGE... I MUST KNOW. BRINNAN'S WISDOM SAVED MANY LIVES... THE ANCESTORS OF THESE OUTCASTS WOULD HAVE DIED IF NOT FOR HIM."

"Brinnan still breathes! And he has the Heart of Lightning. He uses it even now to power machines that keep him on his feet. Brinnan was the one who asked that I come and find you... I have watched him for a long time."

"IS THAT SO? THEN GUIDE ME TO HIM. IF HE IS IN EMBERLIGHT, SURELY HIS KNOWLEDGE SHALL HELP US. AND ONCE HE IS SAFELY IN EMBERLIGHT, I WILL RECLAIM THE HEART OF LIGHTNING... AND FIND MY FALLEN BROTHERS."

"Brinnan is on the outskirts of the Great Colony, right by the Core. It is perilous to go there, Fearsome Lightning!"

"I KNOW THIS. BUT I MUST FIND HIM... JUSTICE DEMANDS IT."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"All of them sorry fools are armed with nasty Shadow weapons, and none of 'em have the overrides- makes me sick to my stomach just bein' near 'em. And there ain't a man in there without them. I tell you what, Desna, we got ourselves one humdinger of a termite nest."

"One humdinger of a termite nest, indeed. But I live for danger!" Desna pulled out a massive cannon. "This here... it's called the Volcannon. Fires a massive flaming cannonball. Takes a while to warp the cannonball back, but the sheer payout is worth it! And if I pick up the ball, I can fire again on the spot!"

Tucker nodded, spinning Frontier Justice once in his hand. "Then I'll cover ya. Locke? Stocke? ...Barrell?!"

Barrell had two Big Angry Bombs, one under each arm. "Ricasso managed to find a trick to defuse the HQ members' suit bombs. Him and Doc have got it now. But why do you think the Hidden Blade members aren't doing anything?"

Locke looked in through the tiny window they were observing the Lower Council room from. "Hmm. Looks like they're waiting to ambush someone at the door. Too bad for them, they aren't watching the ceiling." Locke and Stocke had Recon Cloaks in the left hand and Leviathan Blades in the other.

"All right. We attack in three... two... one..."

Desna kicked down a loose wall, fired her Volcannon inside, and shouted a battle-cry. Barrell tossed the two Big Angry Bombs down through the opening, and Tucker, Stocke, and Locke dropped through, Desna close behind them.

Desna's Volcannon automatically began the warp drive, slowing her down due to the higher energy output. But the element of surprise was working; of the twenty "HQ Lower Councilmen", three lay dead from the Cannon, three more from Barrell's bombs, and four more were wounded or knocked out by either of these two. Tucker unleashed a Frontier Justice charge attack; the bullet took down another four Lower Councilmen, and Locke and Stocke's Leviathan Blades knocked another two down, hitting a third into the flaming cannonball.

The Hidden Blade retaliation was particularly susbtantial, coming in the form of pre-deployed Dark Retribution mines; however, Tucker had spotted them beforehand, and each Knight was in a position where they were safe from the terrifying orbital bombs. Desna's cannonball remained in the spot it was in as the warp drive continued; the cannonball had already set three of the four able Hidden Blade members ablaze. Tucker reloaded Frontier Justice, and fired, shooting down the last member.

The mines faded away, and the burning Hidden Blade members were no longer burning; however, Locke, Stocke, and Barrell had them at swordpoint. One per Recon Ranger. That left ten dead, and ten unable to fight back.

As Desna's Volcannon automatically reloaded, she roared a battle cry. "RECON RANGERS!" Then she glared at the Hidden Blade members. "It seems we ambushed your ambush!"

"They ain't talking in here. Let's take 'em back. When Feron's all better, he'll give these suckers quite the grilling."

Tucker nodded. "I got this joker right here. Looks like the Hidden Blade's plan isn't goin' so well, now is it?"

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Well, Infernire?"

Trilla was standing outside the cell that held Infernire. The Guard Chief held Infernire's Firotech tank and Nonna held the flamethrower nozzle, which was sliced off by the Fearless Rigadoon. "The Hidden Blade's all but beaten now. Our army's regained control of Emberlight." Trilla sheathed her Wild Hunting Blade. "And all your fires are going out."

"Bah! Everything burns, rat-lady! Don't forget this- EVERYTHING burns! And everything WILL burn!" Infernire cackled aloud. "Under Master Varrax, all things will burn. And when I get out of this cage, I'll burn you, too... slowly but surely. And then, while you're burning, I'll burn your little Adoption Agency, before proceeding to every rat-man and every Spiralian that crosses my path!"

"Why, Infernire? Why to things need to burn? To satisfy you?" Trilla pointed to the Firotech tank. "If I were to take your own tank and burn you to ash, would it be right? Would you like it?"

"I... GRRRR! Come on! Let me OUTTA HERE! THINGS BURN! THINGS HAVE TO BURN! BURN!"

Trilla turned around, walking away. The Guard Chief growled at Infernire, holding a Hail Driver in his hand. "You set foot outside your cage and you'll learn another thing. Whether you burn or not... you freeze. Let that sink in for a bit. Nonna, how's the Agency?

"A-OK. Nothing made it in thanks to your guys and Talvi's bots. The tanks were a huge boon. Thank you."

"Anytime, ma'am. It's my job, ain't it?"

Then something came to Nonna's mind. "Chief? Have you seen Petrode?"

"Hmm... one of our scouts saw him. Said Petrode was in the company of a glowing white Silkwing, speaking to it as if it was an old friend..."

"A white Silkwing? A Fiend?"

"No... the Scout said it was everything a Fiend wasn't. Bet you should go find Petrode and check up on him."

"I will. And then I think I'll seek out the one who organized this attack. Suffice to say... I'll have to take away his living privileges."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Hmph."

Varrax shook his head. His attack was still going on, with at least two hundred still in Emberlight. But the superior numbers of the Emberlighters and Knights meant it was doomed to failure. How? The all-out assault should have distracted them... they should have all burned!

"Master Varrax... I apologize." It was Maldex.

"Back to beg for mercy, Maldex? But I have no need to kill you. No. Our hold over the Order is shattered, our attack on Emberlight was thwarted, and to top it all, Fearsome Lightning still stands. He still has the Heart of Lightning!"

Maldex shook his head. "Fearsome Lightning is too powerful to face head-on. We must use Dread Knights."

"Oh, yes, about Dread Knights. You know of our forward base?"

"I do, Master Varrax."

"The three Dread Knights there, as we speak, have been looted and disarmed, and are being tied to the back of a Giant Lichen Colony while, at the same time, their only armor left is the leather padding they wear underneath their armor. No doubt the Spiral Order will know all there is to know about Necroplate."

Maldex nodded. "Back to the shadows with us, then?"

"Indeed. We shall strike from the darkness... and Emberlight will fall. Tinkinzar may lead an entire nation, but this makes him no less gullible than any of the rats..."

Varrax turned. "Sound the retreat. Tell those in Emberlight and the Depth 17 base to abandon all actions and flee. To'Pakar's old buildings have been looted, have they not?"

"They have. His leftover Devilites are also integrating with our own forces."

"And our Swarmspire?"

"Safe as usual."

"Then we are defeated, but not destroyed. You win today, Emberlighters- raise a glass to your victory! But what happens when the tenuous cease-fire you have with the Great Colony begins to crumble? Enjoy your fleeting freedom, Emberlight. For in the end, you will not escape the flames..."

Part 3: A pack of Petrodes

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"You know, it's funny that the government is throwing a party for the guys that got rid of a lot of corruption in it." Algrim was dressed in his ceremonial Proto (which was pretty much the stuff he got when he came out of the drop pod), as were Milyn, Vilkus, and Arkady. Algrim had covered his Spiral Sallet and Brigandine with gold plating, most likely, Vinno theorized, because he could. The Death Knights- no, wait, they're Dread Knights, according to Kora- had been carrying about three hundred thousand crowns apiece, and Algrim had most likely taken his fair share.

"It's not a party, Algrim. It's a ceremony." Milyn had the Volcanic Demo Helm and some Draped Armor; her Round Helm had been rendered unwearable a while back by an Ironclaw Scorcher. "An awards ceremony, moneybags."

"Pssh. At least I'm 'moneybags' and not 'scrooge'. You guys are just jealous because you didn't take advantage of the biggest chance for money-makin' you would ever SEE."

"We're not jealous. We're just wondering why we didn't get our usual portion of the loot, like the looting machine usually works." Vilkus had just worn a Flak Jacket and Crescent Helm.

"Bah. I feel puny in this armor! It is nothing like my new, strong Ironmight." Arkady had neglected to clean his Pith Helm and Brigandine more than was necessary to not smell; half the Pith Helm was rusted and Vinno was unsure whether the red stain on the front of the Brigandine was blood or salad dressing.

Nonna, Trilla, Gracken and Talvi had come up from Emberlight to see this as well; Petrode was standing by Tucker, conversing quietly. Vinno spotted some other big players in both the government and the military.

"Ahem. Is this thing on?"

Vinno turned his head to look up at the front. Venton- the head of the HQ High Council, second only to Captain Ozlo- was about to address the crowd. "Ah, yes. As you all know, Spiral HQ was recently relieved of corruption that had been present even before the Skylark crashed. This corruption was responsible for everything from murdering what totalled hundreds of Spiralians to forcing our demomen to use very sub-par bombs. Yes, before you ask, Mad Doc, I'll be allowing Knights to use the old copies of the Sun Shards again!" About two tables full of knights in Demo Suits cheered jubilantly; Vinno noticed a few Lockdown jocks weren't clapping at that.

"We're not sure what the Hidden Blade should be called. Are they a guild? A cult? A sort of mafia? They have elements of all of these. Whatever they are, they thought they could play our Order like a puppet. And I suppose they did. For a time, the few honest people left in HQ could not do anything. Even Captain Ozlo was unable to do anything against them; the most our military could do was protect a few targets and keep the Skylark mission going. But they showed their hand during the To'Pakar crisis; they attacked two of our Knights and two of our Emberlighter allies, whose names you all probably know by now, while they were searching for another. Before that, our own Intel Agent Kora and Lieutenant Feron managed to confiscate the weapons wielded by Gorgos, one of the Hidden Blade among us. They were Shadow-based weapons with none of the overrides that keeps such weapons from turning the knight that wields them to evil." A low murmur ran through the crowd.

"After To'Pakar was defeated, our Order worked with Emberlight to figure out what the Hidden Blade was up to. Their siege of Emberlight was detected early, and what vehicles and war machines their military had were rolled out to defend the town. Gremlin and Isoran soldiers fought side-by-side to repel the Hidden Blade's sinister allies and stolen robots, and the siege was crushed!" A jubilant roar echoed through the crowd.

"A moment of silence, if you will, for all those killed by the Hidden Blade."

After this moment, Venton continued, "And now, to present awards! First, to Intel Agent Kora, for spotting danger early and going above and beyond to ensure minimal casualties..."

A rousing cheer, especially from Intel, drowned out the remainder of the sentence. After Kora received her award, Venton continued, "To Spiral Vanguards Vilkus, Algrim, and Milyn, as well as Spiral Champion Arkady, for their role in the battle of Emberlight, I present each with a Silver Shield for outstanding courage!"

"WROAAAAAAAAAAAR!" Arkady let out what sounded like a victory shout as he followed Algrim (who himself was doing a little victory dance as he walked) up to the podium. Vilkus came behind, standing straight, with Milyn following shyly behind him. Each of them accepted a small Silver shield-shaped medal.

"To Emberlight Adoption Agency workers-turned-soldiers Vinno and Nonna, for their own roles in the battle of Emberlight, I also present Silver Shields!"

Vinno nodded, and accompanied by the boisterous cheers of the other Emberlighters as well as the Knights, followed Nonna up to the podium to receive their own awards. As Vinno accepted the gleaming silver medallion, Venton whispered, "By the way. Tucker the Deadeye said he wants a word with you after this. It's about Petrode."

"About Petrode?"

"He said it was important- but he said you don't need to worry, there's nothing wrong with Petrode. That's all I could get out of him."

"Good to know. I'll make sure I talk to him."

Vinno walked back as Venton continued, "To Recon Rangers Desna, Locke, Stocke, and Barrell, I present... hey, where'd they go... ah ha! The four of you cloaked up and took your medals prematurely, didn't you! I knew it! Come on, you gotta stand in front of the cro- AAH! You guys make me nervous..."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"You wanted to see us?" Nonna was wondering what Tucker had wanted to talk about. Vinno, as well as Vilkus's squad (now including Arkady), was coming to check it out.

"Sure did. Have a seat, we got time to talk now." Tucker's guns were holstered, as they had been at the ceremony; he refused to do otherwise, on the grounds that "some no-good Dust Zombie could come outta nowhere and someone would have to be ready to shoot him". Petrode was next to him, and on his shoulder, Vinno spotted...

"You? Aren't you that..."

The white Wing nodded its head. "Yes, I'm the one who removed that splinter of Dark Matter from your head. I am a Cottonwing... one could say we are the opposite of Silkwings."

"Really?"

"Yes. When a Wing is hatched from its egg, it is a mere larva, incapable of much other than eating leaves, and without any malice. In the pupa, it comes of age. At that point, ideally, it would become a Cottonwing; Silkwings are the sad result of Swarm corruption entering the pupa. Once corruption sets in, the original larva's mind may as well be dead; in its place is a parasite that drives wild beasts into a frenzy, using them as a weapon against the traveler and mending their wounds only so they can continue killing."

Nonna nodded. "The Agency has taken in a few strange larvae that are smaller than a Silkwing. They haven't entered a... a pupa. I assume you're talking about a cocoon?"

"Yes. Wing larvae enter a cocoon after about two years... they must be well fed. There must be no chance of corruption entering the pupa. Many of them come to Wolver Dens, Lichenous Lairs, the Gloaming Wildwoods, and the Aurora Isles, where there are many leaves; unfortunately, they pupate there, are corrupted by the Swarm, and then turn and use the wild creatures there to attack passersby. Silkwings are kept by Devilites as pets of a sort, and often are left to watch Undead, too."

"And Cottonwings? Can you mend wounds?"

The Cottonwing nodded. "Yes. While the Silkwing's healing is superfluous- often they only stop the pain long enough for their targets to be killed- Cottonwings try to actually mend the wound permanently, to the best of their ability. Yours was simple; pull out the Dark Matter shard and close the cut."

"Yeah... thanks for that."

"NOW THAT YOU KNOW WHAT A COTTONWING IS... WE MUST DISCUSS BRINNAN."

Tucker nodded. "Yeah, but first, we oughta get Nonna an' Vinno up to speed on all the latest issues. Startin' with a little stuff 'bout Petrode."

"Petrode. I found Petrode in a Shadow Lair, you know..." Nonna smiled. "He was nearly out of power and had sustained heavy damage. After I got some Void Gels off my tail, I fixed him up and we fought our way outta there!"

"Yeah, Petrode told me all 'bout that. During the battle, the Cottonwing here helped 'im recall some of his past before that. Y'see, it was a long time ago, way way back when we were still runnin' around..."

Arkady nodded. "You are a Gunslinger Priest. That was very long ago!"

"Sure was. Way back in the golden age of Cradle, the only bad guys around were the Dead Legions and their fiendish allies; the kingdoms of both Gremlins and Slimes, as well as Almire and the Owlites, stood against 'em."

"Almire? The Owlites? This can't end well..." Milyn sighed. "Both were destroyed."

"Yeah. Poor ol' Vanaduke was the first to go... the fiends cooked the books, y'see. They messed with the reports comin' to two other kingdoms, so they were emphasizin' Almire's riches while downplayin' their military strength. Somehow, they got the other two kings to declare war on Almire. Vanaduke was forced to withdraw his troops to defend his own kingdom; this, sadly, didn' save him. You all know the story of the Firestorm Citadel."

Petrode lowered his head, as if in mourning, while Tucker continued, "Things got worse from there. The Dead Legions redoubled their efforts. Eventually, they laid siege to the Owlite Academy. They couldn't make it through with sheer power; naturally, them dirty Fiends started trickin' folk. Laid tomes fulla forbidden magic- Swarm magic, no less- in the path of some of the less upright Owlite scholars."

"Swarm magic?"

"Powerful attacks- able to turn things into statues and cause ridiculous amounts of pain- but they didn't do diddly squat against the Dead Legions. Worse, they weakened the defense of the area against the Swarm, which was behind both the Dead Legions and the Fiends in the first place! The Owlites were killed by some of the Magikats. Some of the Magikats double-crossed the Owlites; after that, a curse was laid on the Magikats, an' ya see the results today in the Spookats."

"The Jelly Kingdoms looked like they were next to go. Downright awful stuff goin' on, Jellycubes- all the common folk, really, but 'specially the poor Jellycubes- bein' attacked and killed, and infighting popping up among Jelly royalty that looked all too familiar to Jelly, Gremlin, and Gunslinger Priest alike. In that time, the Gremlins realized, it wouldn't be easy, but dagnabbit, they had to do somethin' against them Dead Legions. Somethin' big. The Gremlins were already way ahead in technology; the Jellies were flingin' themselves outta catapults, we were packin' ol' rusty pistols and tamed huntin' Wolvers, but the Gremlins had remote-controlled choppers with laser guns. The Gremlin King, Genkinzar, commissioned the Gear Sage Brinnan and one of his sons, Prince Reginzar, to build one heckuva defense system."

"One of his sons? Is the other one..."

"That would be Tinkinzar."

Vilkus nodded slowly. "So Petrode was built by these two Gremlins."

"Sure was. Except he wasn't Petrode- that was Nonna's name for 'im. First, though, Brinnan and Reginzar built and perfected the Retrode. These were meant to stand as opposites to the Dead Legion zombies. Their Energy Beams were meant to be used as a defensive tactic, making a wall of explosions behind which innocent folk could hide. Nowadays they ain't much, really. Seerus pretty much botched their AI. Anyways, after the Retrode project was in full swing, Reginzar and Brinnan began to work on somethin' really big. They needed to inspire hope in the people; the Retrodes were doin' that, but it wasn't enough."

"So they worked night an' day, an' after three months, they were finished. Seven enormous Retrodes, the Seven Guardians, were built. They had more hittin' strength than a Lumber and powerful laser cannons that could tear through Trojan shields. And they were designed with the purpose of protecting those who could not protect themselves."

"So there was a whole pack of Petrodes!"

"You could say that. At the center of each Guardian's system was a Heart- a dynamo that boosted the power of the Guardian's intrisinic abilites considerably. It could convert their energy to unleash different devastating attacks, depending on the Guardian. In an emergency, the Guardian could remove it and operate without it, instead letting the dynamo be used for producing enough energy to power a whole city."

Algrim nodded. "Sweet! Does Petrode have his Heart?"

"I DO NOT. I LOST IT."

"Crud. Well, hey, you get stronger. That's pretty cool!"

"Danged right! Petrode here was called Fearsome Lightning. There was also Shining Light, Mighty Glacier, Unstoppable Force, Roaring Flame, Lethal Swamp, and Crushing Wave. They were the best the Gremlins had... combined, they were nearly unstoppable. The Fiends had no chance of challenging them in any form of combat. But they knew the greatest weakness of the other Gremlin Prince, Tinkinzar."

"Tinkinzar. Did he..."

"He did build the Clockworks, yes. Originally, they were designed to shield Cradle's Core, and the benevolent entity inside, from attack by the Swarm. Tinkinzar directed the labor; the design was partially his own, mostly the Core entity's; the massive energy required was provided by the Core entity. That's all I know about that. However, though Tinkinzar initially had helped the Core, he had grown prideful. As the younger son of Genkinzar, he would not receive full leadership of the Gremlin kingdom; half would have gone to his brother, Reginzar. Tinkinzar didn' want to share power with his brother, feeling that, because he had a hand in building the Clockworks, he deserved to rule over it."

"What? But you just said that the Core entity made most of the design!"

"Tinkinzar was arrogant. The Fiends took advantage of this. They convinced Tinkinzar that the only way he would rule is if his brother was discredited. Tinkinzar hacked six of the Seven Guardians as well as most of the Retrodes, and set them loose on the Great Colony... Many innocent people suffered. Only Fearsome Lightning had avoided being hacked; he was knee-deep in foes in a magnetized zone during the attack. Reginzar, upon hearing of the attacks, tried to shut down the Guardians. The most he could do was activate an emergency teleport system that allowed him to get back the seven hearts; Tinkinzar had remotely disabled every other aspect of control Reginzar had on the Guardians."

"Pah. Tinkinzar is weak! Blaming his own brother for what he did! He didn't even deserve half his kingdom!" Arkady clenched his fist. "I will crush his tiny face when I see him!"

"Might be a bit tough to manage, Ark. Tinkinzar probably won't come out unless he's surrounded by robots."

"Oh. That is unfortunate."

"Anyway, Genkinzar knew what Tinkinzar was up to. He had to stop the attack. Genkinzar thought that, being Tinkinzar's father, he would be able to convince Tinkinzar to stop. He went in front of the Guardians and made a heartfelt plea for him to stop the Guardians. Sadly..."

Vinno growled. "King Tinkinzar killed his own father?"

"He ordered Unstoppable Force to 'destroy the fool'. Reginzar arrived too late to save his father. Reginzar retreated, handing Brinnan his father's body. He ordered Brinnan to escape with Fearsome Lightning and the Guardians' hearts; Reginzar himself managed to lure the other six Guardians into an isolated area and hold them back long enough for them and some refugees to escape."

"Wait. Tucker. You say this as if you were there..."

"Why, that'd be 'cause I was there." Tucker spun his pistol once in his hand. "I was patrollin' the roads in Rolling Rock Valley when I heard there was somethin' going on in Gremlin lands. Upon arrival, I heard the whole thing from Brinnan. I went in to back up Reginzar... and saw the whole thing. After seeing Brinnan past the gate, I went to back up Reginzar and we held the line... for a while. The guardians' lasers were slowly breaking through our turret line, and Retrodes kept trying to flank us. The military had their hands full, too... when it looked hopeless, Reginzar blasted open an exit passage and told me to go. I managed to get into the inner workings of the Great Colony..."

"But the Gremlins were no longer friendly to you, were they?" Milyn said. "You were frozen for..."

"For a long time. When I came out, I was hit by a tranq dart. Next thing I remember, I'm wakin' up in an old, broken-up facility, with a laser hole in the pod I'm in that I figured was torn by the big ol' robot I saw held down by chains an' Layoafers. The Cottonwing just recently told me that Tinkinzar, after the death of Reginzar, declared himself king, allied with the Fiends, declared war on the gunslinger priests, and subjugated most of Cradle. Brinnan, however, escaped alive, but then lost track of where Fearsome Lightning was, and eventually holed up in a dirty cave with a few scattered eggs. One of them was this Cottonwing... Brinnan raised it, and kept Swarm corruption from reaching its pupa."

The Cottonwing nodded. "Brinnan is there to this day. He is keeping himself alive with the energy generated by Fearsome Lightning's heart, having turned the cave into a makeshift home... and he's waiting for someone to get him and the hearts out of there. The cave is in the Colony Outskirts, which is so deep and has so many hostiles Knights haven't even reached it."

Vinno said, "And I suppose Petrode..."

"I WANT TO FIND BRINNAN. HE IS A GEAR SAGE- AN INVENTOR- AND ONE OF MY ORIGINAL CREATORS. HIS MECHANICAL KNOWLEDGE WILL BENEFIT EMBERLIGHT. IT IS THE LOGICAL THING TO DO."

"And you want us to go in and help?"

Tucker shrugged. "If you want. Ultimately, it's your decision..."

Vinno smiled. "Let's do this."

"Yeah! This could be the best thing that ever happened to Emberlight!" Nonna grinned. "Now where's my Callahan? Oh, drat, I left it at Emberlight... we should stop to pick it up."

"An' you four?"

"You will need a Shieldbearer if it is so deep in Gremlin territory."

"Where Vilkus goes, I follow."

"Possibility of rare Gremlin treasures AND doing the right thing at the SAME TIME? WOOOO!"

"Tinkinzar is a coward, a liar, and a murderer. Helping this Gear Sage escape from right under his nose will punish him nicely! Ha ha!"

Tucker let out a chuckle. "Then let's all get ready. We ain't got all day."

"Lower Clockworks regions? Lower than the Core Terminal?"

Tucker nodded. "Y'all set up your Core Terminal above one side of the Core, but the Great Colony is on the complete other side, going from a half a mile to two miles above the Core itself in a big ol' monster of a complex spannin' about five or six depths of two hundred stories each. We aren't goin' in there, though- way too many hostiles. Between four and two miles down are the outskirts, and Brinnan the Gear Sage is holed up in the outskirts, on Depth 31."

Feron nodded. "So the Great Colony is on the other side..."

"Sure is. However, the regions between the two of you are dangerous to traverse. You probably haven't had to deal with too many Gremlins."

"Then how do you intend to get in, find Brinnan, and return?"

Tucker winked. "We Gunslinger Priests happen to know our way around the Clockworks pretty dang well. I'll lead them through a path that's got minimal dangers."

"Well, then. Good luck. I'll requisition some energy to give you a free ride to the Core Terminal."

"Nah, we need to end up at the Depth 23 Clockwork Terminal in the Diamond King gate."

Feron raised an eyebrow. "You're going through the..."

"No, we ain't goin' through the Shadow Lairs! That'd be crazy. Nah, we just need to get to Depth 24 quickly. And I think we're gonna need one of them Beam Torches..."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Depth 23? Got it. I'll get the Elevator to bring you guys down, free a' charge. No worries, I'm happy to help! This Polyp is savin' me LOADS with its thief-catching!" Gracken patted the Polar Polyp on the head. "You already paid me for the Sleep Vials and Vitapods, anyway."

"You're sure? You gotta make a living somehow."

"No worries, I already am. I make two hundred Crystal Energy in an hour on a bad day!"

Vinno grinned. "Thanks, Gracken. We appreciate the help."

"No prob! Just come back in one piece, eh?"

Vinno waved good-bye to Gracken and began walking toward the elevator. Nonna was waiting, with a different weapon set. "Hey, Nonna. What are the new guns?"

"I built my set around stealth. This here..." Nonna spun a smaller Callahan-esque gun in her hand, "...would be an Emberlight Tranquilizer Gun. It'll knock someone out cold, no sweat, and do a little minor Piercing damage, enough to interrupt Greavers. Charging it up will launch the dart a really long distance. I've also got Cloud Nine for knocking out a whole group. This here is called Solar Blast. It's basically a Nitronome specially modified to produce a potent flash, at the expense of some blasting power; it'll be good for quick escapes, providing we've got dimmer goggles. I'll be handing those out, by the way. And this here is a copy of Tucker's Frontier Justice pistol that we managed to make. It deals Normal damage and isn't nearly as shiny, but it's effective- and it has a silencer, too."

Vinno nodded. "Any word on the Hidden Blade?"

"It seems like they've all but vanished. Good thing, too. Now let's head to Depth 23-"

"Vinno!" Trilla ran around the corner, then stopped and gasped for breath. "Whew... ran... all... the way... here. Vinno, I almost forgot to give you this!"

Trilla handed Vinno a strange object; Vinno looked at it. "What is it?"

"Well, you remember that Celestial Ore I found on Depth 20, about two months ago?"

"Whew, people were talking about that for a while." Vinno grinned. "It was the talk of the agency. An abandoned Lichenling was living behind it, you spotted the Lichenling, and then saw the Ore as you picked it up."

"Yeah. Well, I got a Mist Tank and made it into this." Trilla reached into a small pouch on the side of her armor, then pulled out a small telescope. "This thing is a Mile-Zoom Spyglass. You can get a good view of objects about one mile farther ahead with it, or you can set the zoom lower with the dial on the side. I want you to have it."

Trilla handed Vinno the Spyglass; Vinno took it, a little sheepish. "Ah... thanks."

"Vinno! Test it out! That could be really handy." Nonna began pondering the uses of a Mile-Zoom Spyglass. "Hitting a Devilite right in the eye... THAT would be impressive."

Vinno nodded; he peered through it towards the Agency. "Hey, check it out. I can see each individual brick." He smiled. "Thanks, Trilla. This might just save my life."

"That's the idea... Come back alive, okay?"

"I'll do my best."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The elevator creaked to a halt at Depth 23; Tucker and the Cottonwing were already waiting, as was Vilkus's squad. Milyn only had four creatures: Dusty, a Bull Chromalisk, her Giant Lichen Colony, and a Toxoil.

"Right, we're all here. Just waitin' on Petrode..."

"I WAS DELAYED." Petrode came climbing down the elevator shaft. "A HIDDEN BLADE ASSASSIN SAPPED THE ELEVATOR AND ATTACKED. I MANAGED TO THROW HIM OFF, BUT COULD NOT RESTART THE ELEVATOR."

"They're still around?!" Nonna shook her head. "Great. Do you think they might warn Tinkinzar?"

"Maybe. But if we stay hidden well enough, Tinkinzar likely won't take us seriously, not to mention the fact that we won't get attacked if nothin' sees us in the first place."

"Right." Vilkus pulled out his Cyclone Edge. "Where to?"

"Well, get your Beam Torches ready. We gotta cut through a few walls..."

(Whew!)

(Between vacation and a metric crap-ton of homework, I've been strapped for time. No more! I shall now update this!)

"This is the spot, right over here." Tucker pointed at a wall. "Normally I'd have to take out a lasso an' use it as a grappling hook to get past this here wall. But you can just cut a hole in it."

"Are you sure this will take us to the Colony?" Arkady had his Sudaruska and Triglav readied, his eye looking offhand down the road, his Volcanic Pepperbox in its holster.

"Sure as an elephant's memory!" Then he added, "Rare beastie. Elephants are harder to find these days. Anyway, I know this wall- this is one of the trails the Gremlins used to reach the Jelly Kingdoms. Used to be a more open border..."

"How well do you know this trail?"

Tucker chuckled. "Why, this is one of the trails I used to patrol. It's faster now- a whole lot of quick elevators to get you through the rings- but it's still the same ol' trail."

"Wall's open!" Algrim pulled a sizeable chunk out of the wall, and Vinno crept through. Algrim asked, "Is it safe on the other end?"

"Nope, two thousand Greavers. It's up to you, Algrim."

After an awkward silence, Vinno started laughing. "Ha! No! Coast is clear."

Algrim mumbled something under his breath, then came through, followed by the rest of the group. Tucker took point again. "We wanna go quiet from here. They got Gremlin patrols now."

The path seemed to lead away from the metal in the Clockwork Tunnel, transitioning slowly to a more natural path, covered in slight grasses. There were even some trees. Milyn took a breath. "It's very... calming here."

Eventually, they came to a large track. A large platform led up to empty space over strange rails. Vilkus scratched his head. "What's this?"

"It's a train!" Nonna looked at the tracks. "A magnet train, no less. Very advanced, but very fast."

Petrode made a slow nod. "THIS IS HOW THE GREMLINS WORK SO EFFICIENTLY ON THE CLOCKWORKS. THEY UTILIZE AUTOMATED TRAINS TO MOVE BETWEEN THE OUTER EDGES OF EACH DOME AND THE INNER CLOCKWORKS SECTOR."

Tucker chuckled. "Heh, I always did like these. Anyone can get on board; however, cameras monitor the occupants, and fighting is immediately broken up by the tranq-bots. Next train should be here in..." Tucker glanced up at a rusty sign on the wall. "About two minutes."

"Are you sure Tinkinzar isn't..."

"Oh, Tinkinzar does have the cameras monitored. However, Petrode can easily make you guys invisible to cameras with a little static-bendin'."

"THAT IS TRUE. NOW WE WAIT FOR THE TRAIN."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Okay, it's been ten minutes." Vinno looked down the tracks. "Still no sign of a train."

"What could the holdup be?" Nonna looked at the tracks. "Do these still work?"

"THE TRACKS ARE STILL OPERATIONAL..."

Vinno took out his Prime Spyglass. "Let me try this." Vinno zoomed in down the tracks, then Tucker corrected him. "Other side. Trains go thatta way."

"Thanks..." Vinno turned on full zoom, and looked down the track. A few faint points of light could be seen. "Hey! I see a train!"

"Ah, good!" Arkady said. "Is it moving closer?"

"Yeah, it's coming closer. I think I see a windshield... aren't these auto trains?"

Petrode said, "THEY ARE. BUT THERE IS A MANUAL OVERRIDE CONSOLE TO AVOID ACCIDENTS."

Then, as the train came into better view, Vinno's ears pricked up. "Someone's already on board."

"Who?"

Vinno growled and put the Spyglass away. "Hidden Blade Assassins."

"You're sure?"

"I recognize one."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Maldex. Get yourself ready."

"I am ready, you bumbling fool of a Dread Knight. I should be telling you to get ready- I am in charge of this operation, and don't you forget it."

The Dread Knight shrugged. "Believe what you will. Master Varrax knows you've failed him many times recently, and you know as well as I do that your performance determines whether you keep your head."

Maldex refused to speak to the Dread Knight any longer. Instead, he turned to the sniper. "Are you ready?"

"Nothing will survive. All will perish."

"I'll take that as a yes." Maldex drew his Acheron. "I assume the Greavers are ready?"

A knight in a Murderous Cloak and Garb with a Swarm Rod laughed. "They are. Nothing will remain of our foes when our little friends have had their way!"

"And you?"

The Hidden Blade recruit shuddered, quivering as he picked up his Master Blast Bomb. "A-are you sure this is such a good idea? They aren't even trying to-"

"Quiet. You will do as we say now. We will explain later."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vinno had his Valiance out. "It's that one, Milyn. You remember? The one that was with Gorgos and the other two when..."

"When they hurt my beasts?" Milyn reached for a bomb: a Shining Sun Shard bomb, which operated much like the Sun Shards that were made the old way. "They will pay. Dusty!" The Ash Tail looked quizzically up at Milyn. "Get ready. There." Dusty obliged, going to the spot under the platform Milyn had pointed at. Milyn began charging the Sun Shards behind her back. "Vilk?"

"I will take point. My shield can survive their initial attack." Vilkus had his Aegis up and ready.

"And we have his back!" Algrim and Arkady were behind Vilkus, boisterously brandishing their blades. Algrim's Final Flourish spun in the air alongside Arkady's clanging Sudaruska and Triglav.

"All right. The train will stick around for five minutes. We all gotta head on in by that time. Hear me?"

"Loud and clear!" At each of Petrode's sides was a gunner- Tucker on the left and Nonna on the right- with a Frontier Justice. The Giant Lichen Colony moved to the front, looming behind Vilkus, the Toxoil and Bull Chromalisk at its side. The train came swiftly to a halt in front of the platform, and, accompanied by a loud screeching, the doors slowly opened...

Perhaps you have to board an enemy train.

(Thanks, Immortous.

And sorry I keep forgetting these updates, folks; between college and other stuff, I've got a lot of things on my mind!)

A swarm of chittering, screeching Greavers spilled out of the train. The Greavers had dark red markings on their wings, and an aura of dread surrounded each one. Vinno couldn't begin to count them.

"Git 'em!" Tucker fired his Frontier Justice, wiping out one Greaver. The rest- Vinno's counter showed sixty in total, counting the one Tucker had shot down, with twenty already outside the train- began to circle around Vilkus. Three of them swooped in, but a swing from Vilkus's Cyclone Edge interrupted them all.

The Giant Lichen Colony waited for its chance, then barrelled into the mob of Greavers, its spikes impaling six of them with one tackle. Milyn coordinated her attack with the Colony, rolling her Shining Sun Shards beneath a large portion of the mob; the bomb exploded quickly, and four more Greavers fell to the ground.

"YAAAAAARGH!"

Algrim and Arkady, at once, roared and charged into battle. A second wave of Greavers joined with the nearly-decimated first; Nonna, Petrode, Vinno, and Tucker had already reduced the remaining wave to two Greavers before the second had emerged. Arkady's Triglav landed first, freezing five Greavers in place, and then his Sudaruska struck, killing them off and scattering them. Algrim was quick to finish off the scattered Greavers, and as one prepared to swoop in on him from behind, Algrim spun about and fileted the offending Greaver on his Flourish. "I am Algrim Greavers-Bane! Get lost, ya six-legged freaks!"

"Sniper! Duck!"

Algrim ducked, striking at yet another Greaver while saying, "Is it a sniper or a duck, Arkady?"

"Now is not the time for jokes!"

The Giant Lichen Colony took the sniper's nasty shadow bullet, and drew back, two Greavers circling him. Milyn noticed the bullet wound was bubbling, like any Shadow-damage wound would on a Slime; red glyphs were also floating around the Colony, indicating a Curse. Milyn told the Colony to back up; it was a big target.

Vinno advanced, Royal Jelly Shield at the ready. "Watch the windows!"

Another bullet split the air, safely deflected by Arkady's Sudaruska as it swung across to hit the last of the remaining Greavers; the rest had been shot down or otherwise shredded. The Greaver dodged out of the way of the blade, harmlessly finishing its swipe as it did so. Algrim's foot grazed the red mist that resulted from the swipe as he leapt forward, pinning the Greaver against the train's wall with his Flourish. "Ha! Vanquished! Ow, my foot!"

"Algrim! Watch yourself, you appear to be cursed!"

"All right, all right... what the... MY FOOT! THAT STUPID BUG CURSED MY FOOT!" Algrim shook his foot. "Gimme a break! How am I supposed to not use my FOOT?"

Vinno, Tucker and Nonna had their guns out and were watching the windows. Inside, there were some figures moving around- the sniper that had hit Milyn's Lichen Colony, a bomber in what looked like Heavy Demo, a Dread Knight with what looked like a large cursed axe, someone with a Swarm Rod and a full Murderous Cloak, and... the sniper!

Vinno ducked and slid to the side as a bullet flew right past him. The bullet was snatched out of the air by Petrode, who fried it with his laser before advancing. Vilkus was already at the train's entrance, Cyclone Edge at the ready. Meanwhile, the sniper tried to run, only to find himself shot at by a Frontier Justice, a Normal-damage replica of the Frontier Justice, a full Valiance clip, twin Supernovas, and Toxoil spines, and quickly found himself jabbed by the latter.

Vilkus, meanwhile, was immediately met by the Dread Knight, dodging the Knight's first swing before parrying with his Cyclone Edge. Arkady was quick to back him up, and even Algrim, holding his uncursed Combuster while hopping on one foot, ran to help. Milyn held up the rear flank, dodging a Void Bullet from the Swarm Rod before tossing a Shining Sun Shard bomb into the window.

The Dread Knight was barely harmed by Vilkus's first attack, but instead simply swung the massive double-bladed axe around, nearly knocking Vilkus over as his Aegis took the blow. His armor had massive defenses all around, and Normal damage was no exception. However, Arkady's Sudaruska proved weighty enough to knock the Dread Knight backward.

"So..." The Dread Knight picked up his axe. "I have found an opponent that actually can hurt me. Very well. You will be crushed."

"Wrong! I am the one that will be doing the crushing!" Arkady banged the two swords against each other, then motioned toward the front of the train. "Vilkus, you head that way! I will hold off this idiot."

"Yeah! And I got your back- ow, my foot!" Algrim's foot had touched the ground again.

The Dread Knight swung his cursed axe, and Arkady moved his two swords to block it. The loud CLANG that resounded from it made Algrim lose his balance, causing him to fall to the ground. "Man, you guys are no fair..."

Vinno rushed in behind them, keeping his eye on the knight with the Swarm Rod. But where was the one... the Hidden Blade knight with the Fallen Armor?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Heh. That'll teach him to mess with the Deadeye!" Tucker spun his pistol. "Y'all just head on in there behind Vinno. Back 'em up. I'll hold up the rear."

"Got it, Tucker. Is that Cottonwing..."

"The Cottonwing's already gone ahead. It'll be waiting for us at the outer edge of the dome. You don't need to worry 'bout your Lichen Colony, just be sure it stays back."

Milyn nodded, following Nonna, Petrode, and her beasts into the train. As they moved away, Tucker lifted his Frontier Justice, pointing it at a spot under the scaffolding. "You up an' thought you'd get one more of Milyn's critters, didn't you?"

A growl from under the scaffolding showed Maldex had heard him. Tucker chuckled. "Heh heh. I saw that comin' a mile away. One whispered command and Dusty heads on up, avoidin' your Barbarous Thorn Blade altogether."

Maldex chose to attack at this point, flying toward Tucker with his Acheron drawn. Tucker leapt to the side, firing his Frontier Justice as he went; Maldex blocked the shot with a Barbarous Thorn Shield, nearly stressing the shield to its limits, but enabling him to swing his Acheron again. The Acheron grazed Tucker's armor, resulting in a small cut.

"I ain't done yet!" Tucker's arm hurt a little from the cut, but he'd taken worse. Switching to his Argent Peacemaker, Tucker began moving backward, staying aimed at Maldex. Maldex waited, sword ready, for an opening...

The fight between Arkady and the Dread Knight was flying from left to right erratically as one or the other would gain an advantage. Vinno watched for an opening; after Arkady's swing, Vinno rolled behind the Dread Knight and rushed toward the assassin with the Swarm Rod. That assassin lifted his hand up, and a strange form materialized in front of him: a Void Lumber!

Arkady wasn't paying any attention to the Void Lumber. Algrim, however, was. His foot was up in the air, still cursed by the Greaver, and Algrim himself was sitting down, shield raised. There wasn't much he could do unless-

"Algrim! Behind you!"

Algrim turned around, noticing a ticking Master Blast Bomb directly behind him. In a panic, he hit it away with his shield, then jumped toward Arkady and his foe in an attempt to get away from the bomb. His foot hit the ground and sent a short pain up his leg- and then the pain stopped. With his foot still on the ground. "Whew, that was getting old and WHAT THE-"

The Dread Knight had very nearly stomped on Algrim, but Vilkus's shield slammed into the knight's side, followed by a primed Shining Sun Shard bomb, courtesy of Milyn. The combined attack had the Dread Knight reeling, and Arkady was easily able to knock him flat on his back with a hit from each sword.

"Ha. This fight was getting boring and I was winning anyway." Arkady stepped on the Dread Knight's arm to keep him from lifting his axe, and held both swords on top of him. "Could somebody..."

Dusty leapt on top of the Dread Knight, bit his arm, and then grabbed his axe. Algrim patted Dusty's head. "Good dog."

Vinno was circling the Void Lumber, waiting for an opening. The Lumber didn't seem to attack, but instead tensed itself. The assassin with the Swarm Rod, meanwhile, was starting an ominous chant. What was he...

"Vinno, bomb on your six!"

Vinno looked behind him, finding another Master Blast Bomb. "Dang! Where are these coming from?" Vinno jumped out of the bomb's radius well before it exploded. He knew there had to be someone dropping those bombs... he immediately noticed a vague outline running around in the background.

"Nonna, we've got an invisible bomber- aack!"

Some kind of roots were coming out of the ground, tying Vinno's feet to the ground. The Swarm Rod assassin came out from behind his Lumber. "Ah, not so energetic now, are we, rat?"

The Void Lumber lifted its arm, and let the axe fall; Vilkus leapt in the way, taking the blow on his Aegis. The force was enough to break through the shield's defenses and wounded his arm, but it stopped the axe, lodging it in the shield itself.

"Return fire!" Nonna's first shot flew across the room, striking the Lumber in the arm. The bullet was able to slow the Lumber's removal of the axe from Vilkus's shield. As she reloaded, Algrim roared and leapt at the Swarm Rod assassin- only to be stopped by an invisible object.

"There he is!" The force of impact knocked over both Algrim and a very dazed bomber in Heavy Demo, a Master Blast Bomb almost charged in his hands. Nonna pointed her pistol at the bomber. "All right, that's enough bombing for you!"

Vinno, meanwhile, broke free of the roots, and, rolling under the Lumber, tore into the Swarm Rod assassin with his Dread Venom Striker. The sword ripped holes in the Murderous Garb and the Swarm Rod assassin didn't last long after that.

"WARNING! CORRUPTION DETECTED!" Petrode had finally stumbled into the train, and immediately went to work on the Void Lumber. His eye laser tore the Lumber's circuits apart with sheer electrical power. With nothing left to power it, the Void Lumber crumbled, fading away.

Vinno looked over the battleground. One disarmed Dread Knight, one sniper with a spike through his brain, one Swarm Rod assassin torn to ribbons, and one very scared looking bomber. On his own side, everyone was in the train. Except...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Drop... your... weapon... Deadeye!" Maldex charged again, leaping and slashing. Having been angered, all traces of finesse were gone from Maldex's attacks. Tucker nimbly slid under the blow, shooting Maldex in the foot as he went.

"Doggone it, boy, you ain't gonna hit the broad side of a barn throwin' a tantrum like that!" Tucker spun the Argent Peacemaker in his hand. "Anger. That's what drives you, ain't it, Maldex?"

"How... do you... know... my name?!" Maldex charged again, trying to stab Tucker. But Tucker casually sidestepped this attack, and rapped Maldex in the back of the head with his gun.

"Boy, Petrode told me all about ya. Somethin' must happened what made you angrier than a beehive on a hot summer day. Tell me, why'd you join those Hidden Blade fools in the first place?"

"AAAARGH!" Maldex roared, trying a jumping slash, but Tucker rolled underneath him, shot his foot up to trip him, and then stepped on his arm.

"Listen up." Tucker, keeping Maldex's arm pinned, reached for the Acheron. He could feel the evil resonating from it; without the Spiral overrides, the dark forces in the Acheron were unsuppressed. However, Tucker was unaffected, and he tossed the Acheron aside like a twig, then did the same with the Barbarous Thorn Blade at Maldex's belt.

"Now, you seem like you got a head for reason. What with all these battle plans you come up with, you gotta have some grasp of cause an' effect." Tucker pointed his gun at Maldex. "Now, I don't wanna shoot if I don't hafta. Just answer my question."

"Why did I join the Hidden Blade? Why did I join the Hidden Blade?" Maldex growled. "Don't you have any idea? The Spiral Order robbed me. I was an orphan... my mother and father were killed fighting the Morai... under the command of Euclid, no less! Euclid, the most brilliant commander the Spiral Order had to offer, let them die?" Maldex's fist clenched. "Then they decided that, since nobody alive gave a single Crown whether I lived or died... Nobody helped me. So I helped myself."

Tucker shook his head and sighed. "That's awful to hear. I'm serious... I hate to hear of a child losin' his parents. Back in my hometown, we'd all pitch in and take care of orphans."

Maldex was silent.

"So, Maldex. Why would you kill other Knights, then? They might have kids, and those kids would end up as orphans, and suffer like you did-"

"No. They would not suffer like me... because where they would die from their weakness, I survived. I stole at first... then Master Varrax enlightened me on the way I could better go about survival." Maldex let out a malicious laugh. "I survived by the edge of a sword. Don't you know? Only the strong survive. It is the way of nature. Master Varrax understands... the strong should hold power over the weak! And by training under Varrax... I have become stronger than anyone alive! You... only have semantics! Justice? Hope? Defending the weak? These will get you killed, Tucker, and I will likely be the one to do it!"

Tucker shook his head. "One, you're in little shape to make threats, all things considered. I did just disarm you and hold you at gunpoint. Two, sure, I might die. I accepted that long ago. I survived a heckuva lot longer than I expected... but that was not all my doin'. Even the strong find themselves outmuscled, outnumbered, outsmarted, outta luck, or just out of time. Where will you be, Maldex? When you've grown so old you can't stand up again, or come across a spot of hard luck, or been guessed and out-gambitted by a smarter feller, or had twenty Rocket Puppies shootin' at you an' only you, or found yourself fightin' someone with that key bit of more skill than yourself? Tell me, boy. Where will you go after you die?"

Tucker turned around, picked up the Acheron, and threw it off the side of the Clockworks, then took the Barbarous Thorn Blade and also threw it off the side. Maldex started, but Tucker said, "Nope, don't start cryin' about that. I'm doin' you a favor, boy. Do yourself one and get some new armor, or at least put the overrides back on that suit."

Maldex said nothing.

"I know where I'll be goin' when all's said and done, Maldex. And I know what I'm fightin' for. What are you fightin' for, Maldex?" The train began whirring behind him, and Tucker chuckled. "Why, that's my ride. I better get goin'." Tucker looked back one more time at Maldex. "I'll be sparing your life- I do believe I'm being told that I should let you go this time. You're disarmed, after all, and the only clear path is back to the Terminal. Don't waste this chance... it may be your last."

Tucker walked into the train, immediately met by Algrim. "Sheesh, Tuck, you took your time! What on Cradle was goin' ON out there?"

"Maldex." Tucker stowed his Argent Peacemaker. "The Knight in Fallen Armor. He attacked me, but I drove him off."

"TRAIN LEAVING IN THIRTY SECONDS."

Milyn shook her head. "I wish you would have finished him off."

"Hmm. Well, you never know."

Petrode looked at Tucker, and Tucker nodded at him. Petrode gave his own knowing nod back. Vinno raised an eyebrow, then shrugged. Probably just the two old-timers thinking about something from back in the day.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"I..." Maldex looked at his hands. There was no weapon in them. His swords had been thrown off the side... even the Acheron Varrax had given him on his initiation into the Hidden Blade. Tucker the Deadeye had thrown them away... and then spared his life!

"Because he was weak!" The train was already gone, but Maldex could catch them... no, he couldn't. Not a chance. Going into Spiral Order territory with no weapons and override-free armor was suicide... he would have to wait. The nerve of...

Tell me, boy. Where will you go after you die?

Why was he hearing this? He was Maldex. He was an unstoppable force. He could not be destroyed, and it was his lot to destroy the weak.

I know what I'm fightin' for, Maldex.

"No, you don't. You are weak. I am..." Maldex stopped. Was Tucker weak? Tucker had forced him to drop his weapon.

What are you fightin' for?

Maldex tried coming up with an answer. Nothing was coming to mind.

(It's not much, but have this.)

"The guy's nuts, I'm tellin' you. Totally out of his mind." The Hidden Blade bomber was quaking in his boots, and Vinno knew why. Half of it was because of his enemies, and half of it because of his allies. The bomber was a former mercenary who had fought with the Spiral Order, before becoming disillusioned (more than slightly due to some particularly unsportsmanlike Lockdown jocks) and joining the Hidden Blade a few weeks ago. He had found out the Blade's true nature only after Maldex had already strong-armed him into providing support on their task.

"Maldex is out of his mind. Okay. Other than a name, we didn't get much new information out of you. Do you know anything else?"

The bomber nodded. "Yeah. We were supposed to head to the Great Colony afterward. I wasn't given much info other than what I've already told you... those guys are more secretive than the Intel department! At least Intel will give you the time of day!"

Vinno growled. "The Great Colony! Do you think..."

Nonna slowly nodded her head. "Maybe... they have it in for Emberlight, so they might have wanted to start a war. I hear they have six robots like Petrode here in the Great Colony."

"No kidding." The bomber shivered a little. "Sheesh, that's a scary thought. Six of those big guys walkin' around- this one was strong enough to wipe out a Void Lumber like it was a Shufflebot! ...so, now what?"

Vinno shrugged. "We'll be going on, and you..." Vinno looked the bomber over. "What crimes have you already committed as a Hidden Blade member?"

"Nothing, apart from a few bomb system repairs on their guys, and attacking you guys today."

"Good. We'll have to confiscate your weapons for now, but we'll give you a voucher. Just follow the path we already cleared back to Haven and explain the situation to Intel Agent Kora."

The bomber's eyes widened. "Wait. Just like that? You guys are gonna let me go?"

Milyn nodded. "Believe me. Some of our fellow knights can be hard to live with. I, too, left the Spiral Order once... but there are some among us who aren't so bad." Milyn gave Vilkus a wink, to which he replied with a slightly nervous chuckle.

"Thanks a ton. You guys rock!" The bomber sat down off to the side, mostly out of sight. "I promise, I won't work for the Hidden Blade ever again! I never knew about half the stuff you told me about 'em."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"ATTENTION. THE TRAIN HAS ARRIVED AT STATION A. PLEASE EXIT IN THE NEXT FIVE MINUTES, OR STAY ABOARD FOR PASSAGE BACK TO STATION B."

Tucker nodded. "Well, that's our cue. You got your letter, right?"

Nonna had written out a short letter that the bomber was to deliver to Kora, detailing who he was and who he now worked for. The bomber said, "Yeah! I'll see you guys later!"

Tucker led the group off the train. "Everyone okay? Algrim, is your foot all right?"

"It's A-OK! And soon I'm going to order armor with a Maximum Curse Resistance Unique Variant, so that never happens again!"

Vilkus chuckled. "You know something? Now you really can say you fought a hundred Greavers and lived."

"Yeah, they were tough, those thousand Greav-"

"Thousand!" Arkady scoffed. "That many would not have fit in the train!"

"Sure they would have. Greavers aren't exactly big, they're just fast and annoying."

The Giant Lichen Colony came out last, squeezing through the door with a bit of effort. He would be the main supply carrier; Tucker was going to lead them on a stealthier route, so they'd have to be careful.

"I see you've arrived." It was the Cottonwing. "I apologize for leaving so early. It was necessary to ensure there were no Gremlin patrols here, so I left ahead of the train. Are you all right?"

"Mostly. The Lichen Colony here was hit by a bullet and Algrim's foot may be sore."

"Eh, maybe a little. Heal the Lichen first."

The Cottonwing proceeded to tend the Giant Lichen Colony's wound; the Lichen seemed to look at it, grateful for its help.

"Right." Tucker pointed toward a large capsule, suspended above a strange mechanism. "This here is the edge of the dome. And it seems the Cottonwing's already got us a capsule. Thanks for that." Tucker pointed past the capsule, into a strange expanse. "This sucker goes faster than a hare on hot sand with a Wolver on his tail. It goes through the Clockworks' giant gears. We'll use it to get close to Tinkinzar's territory."

Vilkus nodded. "Right. Anything to worry about?"

"Any of you guys get motion sick real easy?" At this, Dusty whimpered a little. Tucker turned and faced him. "What? You get motion sick?" Dusty whimpered again. "Aww, gee. It's all right, boy. It's not too bad. Hey, I'll get you some jerky when we get there. That good? Hey, now you're happy. Good dog..."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Evening, Daxen."

Daxen holstered his gun, the target above his store full of bullets and the floor riddled with shell casings. "Howdy, Archilus. What's up?"

"I received a book in the mail that was meant for you. The system must have placed it incorrectly."

"Sure it's for me? You're into collecting books." Daxen looked at the book. "Hmm. An unabridged history of the Gunslinger Priests, a and a complete listing of their techniques. Published... whoo! This book's a thousand years old!" Daxen then looked at the mail tag. "To Daxen. From Tucker the Deadeye..."

"Curious... it's a very old book. Few books on the Gunslinger Priests were found in Owlite libraries... I must say, my interests have been piqued by this piece. I would dearly like to read this. May I borrow it when you finish?"

"Sure thing, Ark." Daxen handed him the book. "In fact, I'll let you read it first. Just make sure I get it soon- I'd like to see the techniques!"

Node 53120 is credit to team

The capsule remained suspended as Tucker led the team aboard. Even the Giant Lichen Colony and Petrode didn't throw it off balance. Once everyone was inside, the Cottonwing began operating a small console on the side, and the doors slowly shut.

"I must warn you. This transportation capsule will go fast. Buckle up." Some chairs rose out of the floor of the capsule, each one with about three different highly secure restraints.

"Okay, I'm not gonna lie." Vinno looked at the seat. "This is making me nervous. How fast does this go?"

"Fast." Nonna was the one who answered. "I've been on one of these before. They move faster than a jet aircraft, which is probably why nobody uses a jet aircraft on this planet. They're mostly used for troop movement, but this one is public access."

After buckling down, and restraining Milyn's beasts so they would be held down too, the Cottonwing hit a button, afterwards finding its own small seat and buckling up.

"MOTION WILL COMMENCE IN FIVE... FOUR... THREE..."

Arkady muttered, "This is madness."

"TWO... ONE..."

The capsule shot off like a rocket, reaching its maximum speed in only three seconds, accompanied by Arkady shouting swear words. For a total time of two minutes eight seconds, Vinno felt himself pushed against the edge of his restraints- and then the capsule stoppped.

"DESTINATION REACHED: COLONY GEAR."

The restraints automatically released, causing most of the team to fall out of their seats from dizziness. Arkady held his head. "Nobody mentioned that infernal machine!"

"It's a wonder Tinkinzar hasn't streamlined these." Vilkus examined the machine. "It might- no, it will disorient troops coming into battle. It would make a prime ambush spot."

"Normally they got robot guards 'round the capsule stations. They act as a patrol. Now, they ain't invincible, but they're pretty tough- an' when they go down, it sends out an alert so folks know there's somethin' strong 'round those parts."

"I see... so the capsules can make it easier for Tinkinzar's troops to move, because of their speed..." Milyn looked back at the capsule. "But because of the way they disorient you, anyone using the capsules that Tinkinzar doesn't like..."

Vinno nodded. "Yep, they become robot food. Tinkinzar knows tactics, that much is true. Now which way leads to the Gear Sage?"

"This way, through this here desert. We gotta reach the outskirts and chart a path 'round the Colony to a small cavern. The Cottonwing can take us."

The Cottonwing began to move forward, with the team following suit. Then it stopped. "Wait! Your arm!" It turned around and began to mend the wound Vilkus had, so far, kept concealed. "Why did you hide this wound?"

"It was a scratch, nothing more."

Milyn looked at it. "It looks like it hurt. Was that..."

"Took the Void Lumber's axe. But it really was nothing. The Aegis is a better shield than it used to be."

Vinno remembered. "Ah... I was going to say something, but then the battle raged on, and Vilkus didn't make it look like he was wounded."

"Vilkus, please... you're the closest thing to a Guardian we've got. If you're hurt, tell us."

"I will... but it really was a scratch."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"You have a lot of nerve, Dread Knight... speaking to a delegate of the great king Tinkinzar in this way!"

The Dread Knight shrugged. "I do not care what your opinion of me is. What matters is your opinion of the Order of the Hidden Blade."

"Hmm." The Gremlin mulled over something for a bit, before asking, "You really suggest we launch an offensive on Emberlight?"

"I am suggesting that... in my master's place, of course."

"We are aware of your failed attack. Tinkinzar acknowledges Emberlight as having grown from a rabble of outcasts into a resilient, if small, independent city. And now they have the Ironheads- your people- firmly on their side. We cannot face them head-on."

"Do you think you would act alone?" The Dread Knight pointed to his weapons. "The power of the Hidden Blade and the cursed might of the Swarm is behind you... as are six of the seven Guardians of Tinkinzar." They were actually called the Guardians of Reginzar, but mentioning Reginzar would be... impolite. "Are you not aware that the seventh is in the employ of Emberlight? Yet surely the might of the others should... persuade the seventh Guardian, Fearsome Lightning, to join you."

"True." The Gremlin grinned. "True. We will meet in three days to discuss this further. I apologize for the delay... all our allies are meeting us at once. I'm sure you understand."

The Dread Knight nodded. "I understand. I will wait. The Hidden Blade looks forward to further dealings with your great nation..."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Whew!" Algrim reached for a canteen. "This is one hot desert. Where's the train?"

"Outta commission- an' it's been that way for a long time. This here desert is completely ignored by the Gremlins, which is why we stopped here. That, and there's one other thing here I'd like to find."

"Crud..."

Tucker led them through the desert. Vinno noticed it wasn't like the deserts he had heard about before; where those were said to have sand dunes as far as the eye could see, this was less sand and more cracked, parched soil on a Clockwork path. Cacti and other desert plants grew in abundance.

"Wait." Tucker held up his hand, and the entire group stopped. Then he said, "I knew it!" and fired off his Frontier Justice at the ground. A scaly monster, its camouflage now blatantly obvious, immediately fell dead.

"Careful! That's a Desert Chromalisk. They're mean as can be, camouflage perfectly with the sand and attack in groups."

All at once, a lot more Desert Chromalisks leapt out, tongues flailing. But they may as well have hit a brick wall. The Giant Lichen Colony, Arkady, Vilkus, and Petrode moved themselves to block the Chromalisk ambush, with Vilkus, Petrode and Arkady blocking, and the Lichen Colony standing there and soaking up what little damage he took. The four then loosed a vicious counterattack, killing ten of the Chromalisks between them before anyone else could fire a shot. Tucker finished off two more, and Nonna tranquilized another; the last Chromalisk ran away. The fight was over in less than five seconds.

"WHOOOO!" Algrim pumped his fist in the air. "WE'RE AWESOME! WE! ARE! AWESOME! Oh yeah!"

Tucker holstered his gun. "That wasn't much. I remember bein' more scared of those ambushes in the old days... 'course, we didn't have big ol' shields and there were no Giant Lichens around. Still, that was a fine display."

The Cottonwing immediately tended to the Lichen Colony's minor scratches. Milyn, meanwhile, examined Vilkus twice over, checking for a wound. "You won't conceal any more wounds from me. You know that, right?"

"Of course I know that. Don't you trust me?"

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From a distance, Maldex watched.

"Hmph. The fool let me live. Proves who's really stronger, right?" However, half of Maldex's mind was pointing out the error in that statement. Tucker had to have been stronger than Maldex in order to be in any position to spare his life.

"I'll watch them. Watch them, yes. I'll see how they handle the Gremlins in the Great Colony. They'll prove just how weak they are in their battles. I'll sneak in, take their heads from the rats, and gain back favor with Master Varrax."

What are you fightin' for?

"Shut up!" Maldex reached for his sword, only to realize it wasn't there. "Argh!"

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vinno saw something ahead. "A town?"

"Whew, I was gettin' worried! Fresh water, here I come!"

"Wait, you fool!" Vilkus grabbed Algrim, keeping him from running toward the town. "It could be occupied by Gremlins."

"No..." Tucker said. "That place ain't occupied by Gremlins." As the town came closer, Vinno noticed just who was in it. Nobody. The town was empty.

"A ghost town. Whose is it?"

"Whose?" Tucker sighed. "Why, that would be my hometown, right here."
