Prologue
Lasko climbed up the bark of his tall home. He had been hunting for food for his family. His mother had been killed by one of those "Metal Giants" that come into their homes and murder chromalisks as sport. The only family Lasko had now was his brother, Oslak, and his father, Horon. Lasko crawled into the hole in the tree. Oslak and Horon had been eagerly awaiting his arrival.
"Son, you've returned. Have you brought any food for dinner?" Horon asked Lasko.
Lasko answered, "Er-well...no. The lumbers have been out again tonight."
"Lumbers!? Good thing you came back here. But that means we have to stay in here for a few days. Its too risky to go out there."
Oslak, being a young chromalisk, asked, "But we are fast. Those lumbers are really slow and clunky. Can't we outrun them?"
"Oslak, we can never be sure of their plans. Sometimes they come in groups."
BOOM!
Horon scrambled over to the opening of the hole. He peered outside and noticed a particularly large lumber smack a fist into a baby wolver. It got smashed into the ground. Horon felt a tear fall down his cheek.
Then, suddenly, seven wolvers popped out of the ground! They surrounded the lumber. Two pounced. Five scratched it with their claws. The lumber made a clanking noise as all seven wolvers jumped on top of it. Horon watched as the lumber tilted to one side, then the other, then fall flat on its face. The light in its eyes slowly diminished. The wolvers scurried away from the carcass as another boom resounded.
"Yes, like I said, it is very dangerous out there. I don't want either of you two boys going out there for a couple of days. I will go out for our food."
Lasko hurriedly said, "But you could get hurt!"
"Lasko, trust me. You are to stay put while I go out for dinner. Am I clear?"
"But-"
"No."
"Fine. But promise me you will stay safe," Lasko defeatedly said.
"I promise."
Lasko and Ozlak said their goodbyes and watched as their father cautiously crawled out of the hole. He scuttled behind a tree. Then another. Lasko could tell he was taking extra precautions because of the lumbers. He watched as his father walked out of sight.
Lasko waited three minutes before saying to his brother, "Stay here. I'll be right back."
Ozlak quickly asked, "Where are you going?"
"Just to see if father needs any help. I'll be back really soon."
Lasko followed the same footsteps his father had taken. He walked for a while before he saw a chromalisk up ahead. His father was inspecting the grass for footprints. Suddenly a furry creature more than two times his height appeared from behind a tree.
"Kranzaa!" the creature screeched.
Several more of those strange creatures came out from behind other trees. Following them came three lumbers. They surrounded Horon.
"FATHER!" Lasko shouted.
"LAS-"
His voice became muffled. He was going to die! Lasko hurried as fast as he could to save his father from certain death. But a lumber barred his path. The lumber pinned Lasko against a rock wall. It lifted its arm to smash him and Lasko knew it was all over. He braced himself and- nothing. A metal giant had run over and sliced the lumber in half. It crashed to the ground.
Three more giants came out and fought off the remaining lumbers. Then they rounded on the furry creatures. They killed all of the invaders but two. But it was too late for Horon. One monster bagged him and the other helped run away with the bag. The ducked into a hole and the giants couldn't reach them. Once they had realized they were done with those creatures for the moment, the giants noticed Lasko huddling in the corner of the rock.
One reached down and lifted Lasko up.
"Aw..it looks frightened," one giant said.
Another quickly said, "Put that down!"
The first giant repeated, "Put it down? But it doesn't look like it will hurt us. Look, it is really scared of us."
"Its dangerous, Lydia."
Lasko could only understand their words because he was not like other chromalisks. His mother had been half chromalisk and half gremlin. Because of this, Lasko had gotten the gift of being able to understand many different languages. Sadly though, he was never taught Gremlish. Lasko had yet to even see what a gremlin looked like but he supposed they were another nice race like chromalisks.
A third giant, who looked to be the leader, told the other three, "Go secure the area for more gremlins. We want to make sure the area is safe before moving out."
He continued, "Harold, stop arguing with Lydia. Let her keep the chromalisk if she wants to. It doesn't look like it can do much harm."
Lasko hadn't listened to that last part. The first sentence the leader had said had put him to thinking. When he had said "Go secure the area for more gremlins," a new idea had dawned on Lasko. Did that mean gremlins were those...furry creatures? His grandfather was a gremlin. He couldn't believe it. His ancestor was one of those...Monsters!
Lydia said to the leader, "Thanks Eric."
Lasko just realized, that giant was going to take him from his family. But what about Ozlak? Lasko couldn't let him try to survive alone. Lasko decided to tell the strangers that he needed to stay.
"Greep! Meep fleep!" he said.
In Lasko's mind, he had said "Put me down! I need to stay for my brother!" But the giants had understood it as "Greep! Meep fleep!"
"It looks like he's trying to tell us something," Lydia pronounced.
"Who cares? Its just a stupid monster," Harold challenged.
Lydia replied, "Don't say that. What if you were in his spot?"
"HIS spot? You assume its a male? You think monsters have GENDERS?!"
"HEY. Stop it right now, Harold," Eric shouted.
Harold walked forward, in a sulking manner. He looked as if he was ready to slice Lasko in half. Lasko retreated further back in the hands of Lydia. Her hands felt smooth and warm against the bitter cold wind.
Eric demanded, "Lydia, put that chromalisk somewhere in your pack. Damien, go scout ahead."
"Roger that sir," the final giant said.
Damien ran ahead. Not more than ten seconds was he gone when he came running back with all his speed and power. He was making a hand signal to run. And suddenly the other three saw why. Six lumbers rounded a corner followed by twenty wolvers.
Eric yelled, "Stand your ground!" He pulled out what looked like a stick coated in fire at the tip. Three wolvers came at him and in one fluid motion he stabbed them all. Damien put on his recon cloak and sneaked behind one of the lumbers. He took out a sword with a holy aura about it and with one swing smashed the lumber to bits.
Lydia grabbed a gun from her belt. Eight wolvers came rushing towards her. She hurriedly charged up the gun and let loose. Almost 30 bullets shot out from it and all the wolvers lay on the ground, dead.
Three lumbers started coming towards Harold. He took out a bomb and froze them. He froze them again and again. Then a lumber, still frozen, pummeled Harold in his side.
He shouted, "Screw this!" and pulled out a gigantic hammer.
"Eat some of your own medicine!"
He smacked it into the lumbers with one swing and all three fell on the ground, destroyed. The remaining two lumbers charged towards the group together, but five wolvers pounced onto them.
The other four wolvers ran towards the party. Lydia and Eric easily dispatched of them. The group watched as the five wolvers brought one lumber to the ground and the other smashed them all into the wall. One lumber was left. Suddenly Damien appeared beside the lumber and smacked his sword into it.
"There we go," said Eric. "Lets get to the elevator."
The party walked over to the elevator as Lydia slid Lasko into a pouch on her pack.
Eric told the party, "I'm going up, you guys?"
In unison, Damien, Harold, and Lydia all said, "Me too."
They all stepped onto the lift and Eric pressed coordinates on a screen. The elevator shot up towards the surface.
"Those giants..they seemed to be...knights of some kind," Lasko thought.
And then he closed his eyes and listened to the whir of the elevator.
