One of my more-experienced friends told me that I could buy an elevator pass to conserve energy, so I could play more per day. where could I buy one? Also, does the elevator pass count for one day, or is it a lifetime pass?

It's one of the options in the Energy window (the button on the lower-right edge of the screen, with your energy count). Elevator passes last for 1 month, though you can buy more and extend the time limit.
Well, for the stand-alone java client anyway. I don't know how energy/pass purchases work for Steam.
