Shields and armors are 2 separated things.
Besides the pierce part of ironmight may as well be ignored agaisnt slags and trojans.

Might as well have 3 shields, one for each damage type. This allows you to switch shields to use in different stratum/missions.

Scarlet Shield works well for bombers.
Oh, did I say bombers? I meant EXPERIENCED bombers.
Onto discussion, the Scarlet Shield is a 3 star Normal/Elemental, that gives +2 health, recommended for highly experienced bombers.
If you're just starting out, go for a Volcanic Plate Shield, it will suit you well for any adventure.

Seriously. It can't be that hard to make one for us. I've posted about it twice on the Suggestions forums.

You can always get to CTR max and DMG max for bombs with armor and trinkets alone; no shield or UVs required.

You can reach ctr max and damage vh with only armour and a heated weapon. One trinket slot allows you to obtain damage max. Swords and guns reach vh in either damage or ctr/asi, and requires both trinket slots to max/complement with a missing bonus. Unless you use shields and uv's, you can't max out asi/damage/ctr with only armour and trinket slots.

Defensively, yes, bombers don't have many options. Beginning gunners have it worst than bombers though, since their gear starts at 3* instead of 2*.

IMO
bombers dont use sheilds unless in dire situations (via vana's mace), so Volcanic plate would suit that...... if u have a sidearm it would be better if u get SwiftStrike or the snarb sheild (forgot name). other than that most sheilds work fine blocking turret bullets

Swiftstrike and Thorn shield
Swiftstrike and Thorn shield only make sense if you are carrying a mix of weapons. If you do carry one gun or one sword, the shield boost makes sense.
If you are only doing bombs, stick to the protection you need. I recommend something that protects against status as well, if you are doing FSC, go with something with fire resist. That way when you get caught in Zombie Breath you might actually live through it. This is very important if you are wearing mad bomber stuff. If you aren't wearing mad bomber stuff, well then who cares? You're fine, just get a shield, you'll rarely use it anyhow. You'll be too busy spamming your bombs to care.
I use Crest of Almire. It treats me very well. Owlite is also very popular. But I see bombers basically carrying whatever they like best.
There's no special choice.
Ask yourself whats more dangerous or what will you encounter more often and protect agaisnt it.
