I mean... since the full release me and my few friends who uses laptops and low-end pc user have been having nightmare! on the beta, we can turn off those special effect (e.g. snows, storms, lava background, fogs, etc) but now u can't. Please, i can't upgrade my pc, or buy a better pc because i already have a console and my parents won't allow me to buy a new pc unless i sell my console.. please, at least add a LOWEST graphic setting, or 'Turn off special effect' option... I usualy can go through a t2 run by myself but now i can't survive 1 depth without dying by myself because of the choppy gameplay. the compatibility mode helped me a bit, but i still have the problem.
Get the old graphic back? for the sake of low-end pc user
I'm pretty sure in the options you can still turn the graphic settings on low. I have done so on my laptop. Loses a lot of character detail and a lot of details like you said, snow, fire, etc.
What i noticed is that the most fps sucks up the particles fog. When near the fog I dip from 40-50 fps to 20 fps and get input lag.
I sign for this too. I can't do the Jelly King because the game literally becomes unplayable, even on the lowest possible graphic settings - it's like looking at a photo slideshow. Of me dying.
The lowest settings...are not low enough. Especially since they still apply particle effects like snow and stuff.

I play on a gaming laptop and although I can run the game fine I personally enjoy having the option to adjust the settings to the lowest degree playable. A main reason I'd like to bring it back though is because I have friends who don't have gaming rigs and I would like to introduce them to the game without them having to worry about low-end software.
*signs*
How bout we ask the mod or someone in charge to get rid of the F*&$ing fog? drops my fps down to 10-20
I play on a 9-month-old Mac Book Pro (fairly top of the line; I do freelance editing and graphics work) and even I would like to notch the graphics down. Don't get me wrong, I think this game looks AWESOME. Great job from your artists.
But I lag every time King Jelly spins. Every time he attacks, I go down to 2 FPS for about 2 seconds. Its almost impossible to time my shielding.
And when there's fire? Same deal. Fire levels are impossible to play strategically. I just have to hope not to die.
I agree. There's almost no difference between low and medium graphics.
Turn off rendering, put graphics at low, and lower the resolution. I have a 6-7 year old laptop, that is falling apart, has 1.73 ghz Intel core duo, 2gb or RAM, and has a ATI Radeon Mobility X1400 in it and I can play Spiral Knights just fine.
I bought this baby in 2005.
Your computer SHOULD NOT be older then mine and if it is, you are doing it wrong. Computer hardware is meant to be upgraded every 5-6 years to keep up with the times.

More recent integrated chipsets can still be much less powerful. Those using Intel Intergrated Graphics (or any interegated brands really) tend to suffer the most since those slow to a crawl the moment you mention fog animation around them. Much of the chipset numbers they throw around in this region tends to be rather misleading as to how advanced it really is.
I did some checking and this game isn't GPU limited, it's CPU limited (maybe unless you have integrated graphics). The API must be being used in a very inefficient way.
If you are using a integrated graphics chips as a gpu, you're doing it wrong.
You NEVER use built in chips for gaming, you ALWAYS get a graphics card.
What if the only PC you have is a netbook? Honestly, I think OOO should put in a intergrated graphics option for intergrated graphics cards only. So they can play on an incredibly low setting if they need to.
Ahahaha if you are using a netbook as a "gaming" machine you are DEFINITELY doing it wrong. Very few games are actually optimized for "netbooks".
They make special laptops for gaming, however they aren't cheap. Try the Asus line either no get a desktop.
This game isn't super freaking large or complex. I actually watch my processors while I'm playing, and have quit a bit of headroom.
Which is why it's kind of odd how often I lag.
I turned on Compatibility Mode, and it's made things slightly better. But I still can't play strategically against Jelly King. At this point, I'm not really sure what's causing my dropping frame rates; I've run ping tests and bandwidth tests, as well as having done graphics and processor benchmarks (prior to and unrelated to Spiral Knights).
Try these steps
1. TURN OFF RENDERING-This only for those with GOOD pc's
If that doesn't work;
2. Turn down the graphic settings
Finally, if that doesn't work;
3. Lower the resolution
I have to play mine at 1024X768 30hz or is it 60?, with low graphics and rendering off. I still get some lag spikes especially in town and Moorcroft Manor.
If your computer is at or below these specifications, you ARE going to need to do the same or a combo of them, they don't necessarily have to be done in that order, i.e you can have 1440X900 and play with low graphics with rendering off, if your machine can handle it, but mine can't so I do what I do.
1.73Ghz Intel Core Duo
X1400 ATI Radeon (laptops will have mobile or mobility in the name)
2GB of RAM
The reason I use the specs of my computer is because it's the oldest one I know of. Perhaps others can inject their specs or something.
I've got a Windows XP desktop PC with a Radeon HD4650, 1GB ram and AMD LE-1600 CPU (clocked at 2,2Ghz) and i'm currently dipping in almost all levels in 20-25fps. There is seriously something wrong. I've swapped the drivers a few times, overclocked the card, messed around with CCC settings and no dice, nothing changes anything.
I think it'd be great to crank the graphics lower. I play at work on a crappy laptop and i can't really contribute much if there are flames or too many enemies on the screen. Just the particle effects or something would probably be a notable step up.

Have you tried turning rendering off? You should be able to play this game with no problem, but then again it's based of Java so...if you have rendering off, yah I would say there is a major problem for your end.
I get a lag spike here and there but nothing too major.
How do you know what FPS you are going at? I can't find a counter for it.
What exactly do you mean by turning off the rendering? Where can i find it? I turned on compatibility mode, lowered the graphics details to lowest level and it didn't help. About the fps counter, i just used external tools - ati tray tools.
I support this.
The game is not playable with the minimum requirements currently against jelly king and firestorm citadel.
OPTIMIZE THE GAME VIA OPTIONS AGAIN SO IT CAN BE PLAYABLE. Why wouldn't you? What is there to lose?
Ok apparently some people do not understand where video options are.
Esc-Video-Advanced-uncheck rendering
along with this you have resolution settings and graphics quality.
It's not that hard people -.-
You need to be making sure that your computer even meets the MINIMAL REQUIREMENT to run the game.

Have a read and learn something.
This is the problem with cpu games appealing to casual players, they don't crap know about the dang system they are using and sure as heck don't know about the hardware in it.
Esc-Video-Advanced-uncheck rendering
You mean Render Effects?
You know that is not checked by default and is automatically disabled when ever you check compatibility mode right? Anyone who has checked Compatibility Mode has already disabled this.
Compatibility Mode doesn't disable rendering, it just doesn't let you mess with it. Also, most people shouldn't need to use compatibility mode.
Yes that's the setting Render Effects.
Compatibility Mode doesn't disable rendering, it just doesn't let you mess with it. Also, most people shouldn't need to use compatibility mode.
I very much doubt that enabling compatibility mode doesn't also disable rendering. Do you have a citation/proof for that?
When you click the compatibility checkbox, it not only greys out the rendering check box, but also displays it as unchecked, even if you have it checked initially. *IF* rendering isn't disabled, then OOO needs to fix their GUI.
And, I'll throw my vote for this suggestion. Not only do I have a laptop that is too slow in really crowded areas (lots of flame puppies, etc.), but I have heard several of my guild mates complain about it too. We went over the suggestions in this thread, and none of them worked, except for one guild mate that found that updating her drivers helped dramatically.
Compatibility Mode doesn't disable rendering
That's wrong. Even though it does not change the registry setting for Render Effects, the Compatibility Mode option will override it. All you have to do is watch the skybox image while doing the toggle for confirmation. The "Distance Mist" from Render Effects will disappear. The both checked bug was found and fixed months ago (early December IIRC) when the option was introduced.
Certain special effects do get optimized over time. Retrode laser attacks used to universally flog computers. Facing groups was a crazy experience then.
Turning off fog effects and such is still a good idea for those running the minimum spec computers. At this point OOO has likely taken this into account and we just need to wait and see for what happens.
OK so it does disable rendering, so I was WRONG.
The Main problem it seems you people are having is that you think you can play video games on a computer or laptop without a proper GPU. Let me state this for the LAST time, YOU CANNOT PLAY VIDEO GAMES ON A BUILT IN GRAPHICS CHIP UNLESS THE GAME IS OPTIMIZED TO RUN ON THEM SPECIFICALLY, *cough* Torchlight. However, most developers will NOT optimize their games to run on Built-in's because they have to optimize so many different chipsets whereas with GPU's you have Nivdia and ATI and that's.
Another thing that I seen being brought up, you ALWAYS update your video cards to the latest version on the driver, ALWAYS.
However there is an EXTREME problem with those that have OEM based laptops, you can't just update the driver unless you use the OEM's version and well let's just say that Dell's hasn't been updated since 2006.
If you need to update your driver on a OEM based laptop and the ATI or NVIDIA drivers aren't working/won't install for your card, you are going to have to mod it.
If ANY of you are still having system lag, not net lag, with the game you need to do one or ALL of the following.
1. Turn off Render Effects under the Advanced Video Settings.
2. Lower the graphics Quality.
3. Lower the screen resolution.
4. Update your video drivers.
If you have a laptop you probably dont' have a GPU, unless you specifically requested it.
If you have done all of the following, and it still doesn't work, you don't have the specs required to run the game, whether its the GPU, Processor Speed, or RAM that is lacking I can't say until you gave me the specs for your unit.
I have a 256MB ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 GPU and the game runs OK for me on Lowest graphics settings, 2nd lowest resolution (window), and Rendering Effects OFF and I still get lag spikes here and there.

Yes, terrible isn't it? I think Three Rings should follow Godofskype1's advice and intentionally limit the number of players who are capable of running their game. Then all those pesky casual players will be gone, and you'll have an online world filled with users like Godofskype1. Utopia!
Oh wait.
I try to play on a netbook and "yes, I know netbooks aren't meant for that", but many games are playable on it and I like it.
There are many nice visual effects in this game, which are beautiful and should be there to be able to compete with other up-to-date games. I don't want this game to look "ugly" for all players, may players with "real" computers play with all the beauty this game offers, but personally I don't need fog or rain or snow or bullet-shells. I would like to be able to switch off more of these effects.
I've put some money in this game and I'm willing to spent more of my money to it. I think OOO would like if I (and other players with low hardware) give my money them, instead of the hardware vendors ;-)

I totally posted a very helpful post above, and then you have to do that. I was merely mentioning the fact that appealing to the casual means you get STUPID people, who don't know about the finer points of PC gaming. PC gaming isn't for everyone and there is much more involved in it then just clicking a mouse and hitting keys -.-.

Totally not for that at all. Uh, you kinda want bullet shells, just saying... Anyways I agree, being able to switch some of these things off would be nice. Might help reduce my damn lag to..
soon or late someone of those players have very problem like this.. will configure hes game.. and will disable the effects.. im sure of that.. just wait it!!!...
you know when a thread is old when it has GodofSkype1 in it
Holloween is truly the holiday of the undead..... when threads that have long since died raise from the depths of old page listings, and revisit us with its questionable relevance. But as scary as that sounds, I worry more about the people who restart a conversation that most of the posters probably forgot.
I use both a tower PC and a laptop to play, at differing times.
On the laptop, I'd also benefit from having yet another step-down in graphics available. So sign me up as liking this idea as a nice possibility.
