Try it with a kite. Laser robos and gremlin flamers add to the experience especially while doing quick solo (/Basil) runs, but a sufficient amount of any sort of mobs should make you understand the "puzzle" here.
This isn't a bug, it's just a courtesy!
Actually, some of the new-feeling(I don't recognize them!) stratum layouts are a bit goofy. Maybe this is the yin to the yang I encountered of a rotating sequence of spikes going in a square that required me to hit 6 or so switches(and complete 4-5 loops around to do so) along the slow-moving spikes.
Never seen such pointless douchebaggery of time-wasting "puzzles" in my life!
Nevertheless, I still laughed about it!
