Playing with someone else, effects on progression

So here's our situation as short as possible

Me and my brother are playing this game, however the times when one of us is not available we'd like to be able to play solo, so far we have only duo'd and haven't got that far, aprox 3 hours into the game (done several tutorial missions includnig crafting a gun/sword, handing it in etc) and simply wondering how far one would progress beyond the other should he play solo much* and how easy it would be to personally help the other person in order to catch up to his progression level

For example; he's not available for the next two days, I could play for those days however. Would this screw us up for say the third day or would I be able to catch him up somehow quickly?

*Not sure how much

Any answer be appreciated :)

No. There is no way to "screw up" progress that early into the game.

If you want to "catch up" to him, say in missions or money wise, it would be easy.

Unlike a lot of other MMOs,

Unlike a lot of other MMOs, the nice thing about Spiral Knights is that there aren't really any artificial barriers between people who have made it through different parts of the game. So long as you yourself are qualified, you can invite even a new player pretty much anywhere. (I wouldn't exactly recommend bringing a newbie to the Firestorm Citadel, but hey, whatever works for you.) And more important for you, even someone who's completed every single bit of content in the game can go back and help a new player with the easiest levels. If you and your brother are going through the missions together, you can always replay any of the ones he hasn't finished yet with him. And if you're doing regular Arcade runs, you'll always be able to go through Tier 1 with him.

But...

The player further behind won't be able to do rank missions with the player ahead of him. This isn't too much of an issue, tbh, since most of your progression is going to deal with farming rather than completing consecutive ranked missions.

Also, if one player falls far enough behind, it can be difficult for him to contribute at your level.

That's not entirely correct. The player ahead can send an invite, and the player lagging behind will be able to join everything, just that he won't get the mission reward.

The invite dialog will clearly state that you are not eligible for this mission, but let you join anyway.

Just don't expect to survive unless you are reasonably geared and good at dodging. :D

The game is divided within 3 tiers, and if you're trying to play the game with someone else, it's best to try to stay within the same tier, progressing simultaneously. It may not be the best for the sake of profit, but when you jump into the next tier, you will quickly get propelled way over your head. Most of the time its a "sink or swim" type deal, where you either limp back to the previous tier to farm for better gear, or you struggle through the new difficulties at huge losses.

This is mainly exemplified when going from tier 2 to tier 3, or in terms of gear: 3* to 4*. Going from tier 1 to tier 2 isn't nearly as bad as tier 2 to tier 3. You can even skip a huge amount of tier 1 to begin with if you know what to get on the Auction House (For example, the Brandish, Flourish, Wolver Cap and Wolver Coat are all 2* items, but can be found on the Auction House for a little over/under 1000 crowns each).

So as long as you both have full 2* (or better) gear before trying tier 2, and you both have full 4* (or better) gear before trying tier 3, then you guys can each go at your own paces.
