I think the stupid swarm monsters crashed the skylark.
if the swarm doesnt want us to see whats in the core. why did it make the ship crash in the homeland?
besides i have something to confess... i accidently threw a jelly doughnut in the GPS thingy mabob thinking it was a trashcan O.O but then it started shooting out electricity and jelly and then WAM! the whole ship blacked out and we went drifting into Cradle...
sorry guys?
it had flashing lights on it and said "WARNIG WARNING MAKE A LEFT TURN IN 2.5lightyears! avoid Planet to the Right"
IT DIED SO YOU COULD PLAY A GAME WITH SOME DUMB ROBOTS RUNNING AROUND AND KILLING NATIVES ON A PLANED LIKE THE LITTLE JERKS THEY ARE WHILE THEY DRESS UP WITH ACCESSORIES TO LOOK SWAGGY
IT BURNED TO DEATH
IT HONKING BROKE ITS SPINE AND SUFFERED FOR YOU
ARE YOU HAPPY NOW
I find the notion of the Skylark as a clockworks stratum to be... interesting. It would certainly be a fun level to play, and could reveal new lore about the shadowy organization that we call the spiral order. (Seriously- the ship was full of people, yet most of them were labeled as recruits. Who are we, and why did we have such a big starship of unprepared knights so far from our base?)
However, the ship was a part of the clockworks, then I'm not sure why we'd be trying to reach the core as a power source to get home. I mean, what would we be trying to power? A more likely scenario is that the skylark is still sitting neglected in the crash site, waiting for us to return from Haven.
Quite possible, if I had to guess why Cradle's moon's like that, it would be because of the Skylark.
I would also like to say that I believe the swarm doesn't want us to get to the core, but watevah is inside it does, so we can save it. Maybe it somehow managed to get the moon to crash into us so we could save it from the big scary swarm. Also, for those who haven't done SL: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/Artifact#Shadow_Lair_Artifacts
It's crashing into Cradle as we speak.
Think about it, how could it keep launching escape pods, if it wasn't?
^Easy, The pod you show up in is just a spawner, It respawns more and more knights.
There was never a skylark. Instead, the sealed underworld has been sending brainwashed, incomplete Trojans to wreak havoc on the clockworks protectors, use up all its energy, and destroy the core. All to release the void.
The Strangers were manipulating us all along!
Knights take different times to awake.
The core expoloded under mysterious circumstances, no one knows the trigger. They were scanning cradle when it exploded. Then the ship crashed then blew up. All knights escaping and waking up at different times.
It took a comet to the lower starboard bow.
~Luke
It crashed into the fourth wall and was thus chosen to drive the plot.
...
In all seriousness, the Echo Stones in the Shadow Lairs implies that the core sort of gathered up various worlds and used them as a form of protection (UIMF Echo Stone to be exact). King Tinkinzar would then arrange said worlds in the clockworks, to ensure that no one would be able to reach the core.
However, though the Skylark was pulled to the Cradle, King Tinkinzar saw us Knights as a threat, especially because we are trying to reach the core, and thus is reacting violently to us. As of now, the Skylark is either a ruined wreck on the surface of the Cradle somewhere, or just another strata drifting through the clockworks.
