Understanding the microphone symbols next to names...

While I generally know what toggling them off and on does...I actually don't really.

For those that don't have microphone symbols next to their name, I'm going to assume that that's simply because they aren't playing through Steam?

Otherwise for those that do...

1. Toggling yours off just makes it so the other people cannot hear what's coming our of your recording device. Is that correct?
2. What the heck does toggling other's mics do then? It certainly isn't turning them off in my case, unless that's just some sort of lingering glitch on my behalf. Perhaps it makes it so just that person in particular won't be able to hear from your recording device?
3. Can those without Steam hear from your device?

You don't have to answer the questions directly if you can give a general explanation. Regardless, thanks for any help and clearing of confusion.

From what I have seen, only the party leader can disable a microphone someone else is using. Disabling it while not the party leader or the one using it shows it has been muted but you can still hear them screaming. You can disable your own manually or unplug it. Alternatively you can disable having to deal with anyone using a mic through the options menu.

It's a bit buggy. A few days

It's a bit buggy. A few days ago this happened and I wanted to share this but I didn't feel it deserved it's own thread:
I usually roll with voice chat enabled, but it tries to go through a mic that's not connected, so I hear other people by default. Everyone who uses voice chat in this game has run into that guy who doesn't actually talk and all you can hear is random screaming, blood squirting, and others assorted background noises. So I muted the guy, and when I went solo because I was a bit pressed for time, I started picking up that background noise again, like a solid 10 seconds after I was done loading the solo party. It was eerie because I hear him mumbling for about 15 seconds, while I was alone in that level.

As far as I know the symbol

As far as I know the symbol is there if they HAVE microphones, nothing to do with steam. Toggling others microphones is just if you don't want to hear them talk. Anyone can hear you regardless of if they have steam or not.

I'm genuinely confused about this

Did a few random party runs, and noticed a few more things...

- For those people that DID have microphones, whenever they muted it apparently, the icon would disappear. So even if the icon doesn't show, they probably still have one
- Some people could hear my microphone, while most were either indifferent or could not hear it
- IIRC, all the people that COULD hear it had microphone symbols next to their name
- I thought Luguiru's claim was right until somehow I could mute other people's mics properly this time

So yes I can still completely confused and am looking for more explanations. Duke's story is quite intriguing though, I'll give it that... =S

However...

I have been wondering about th is myself, I HAVE a mic (headset) plugged in, but I have never seen a mic symbol, but my friend who uses Steam and has a mic (headset) plugged in can see the mic symbol and has shown me, so I'm wonderin if it has to do with Steam users? I have also intensively scoured the options and never found anything on mics, annnddd I have never been in a party where Users could talk to each other, or they could hear me, or I could hear them.

Here's the little that I know

Here's the little that I know from my own experiences (which happened a long while ago so it could have changed by now):

Only Steam users can use voice chat and probably only Steam users can see the voice chat options.

If you enable voice chat in the Game Options, whether you have a mic or not, the microphone symbol will display beside your knight's name and you will see the mic symbols beside anyone else in the party who also has voice chat enabled. If you don't have this enabled, you don't see any mic symbols at all (whether they have them or not) and as far as I know you also won't be able to hear anyone else' voice chat. It has nothing to do with whether you actually have a mic plugged in or not.

I've never played with the toggling before, but I've experienced the delay at the end of a level (when loading the next screen) where it can take a few seconds before the mics cut out.
