three piercing guns

There are three piercing guns: Blitz Needle (high damage, especially on charge, but really immobile), Plague Needle (like Blitz Needle, but trading damage for poison), and Callahan.

Callahan is less mobile than Argent or alchemers, but more mobile than Blitz/Plague. You can't move while firing, but you can move while reloading (as of an update maybe six months ago?). The shots are few and heavy, but frankly not heavy enough to lead to high DPS. The bullets are very fast; I don't think that anything can dodge them. Callahan encourages a sniper-like mentality --- for example, surgically picking off silkwings inside a crowd. I think it's fun, but it's certainly not the highest-priority gun to get in the game.

For more opinions, try searching for the various "Ask a Master Gunslinger Anything" threads. The original one (I think) really liked Callahan, but that's pretty old now.

The main reason people stay

The main reason people stay away from Callahan (and Iron Slug) is its low damage output. Other than that, I like everything about it.

I like Callahan for devilites and used in concert with other guns for beasts and gremlins.

-Callahan is a slight improvement over elemental Alchemers against devilites. The flinch ability on the Callahan is mostly useless here as devilites attack before their animation completes...nonetheless it does good damage and is more mobile than Blitz.

-Shoot a wolver once close range with Callahan, then switch to Blitz and you can kill them as fast as swordies can. Just don't bother using it against the various lizards.

-Switch shoot a Callahan with an Umbra against a gremlin to totally shut it down. Although blitz charge is probably better against gremlins in most situations: with sufficient CTR, of course.

Callahan is already a solid utility gun for pure gunners, but if you aren't sure about it, just wait for the magnus line buff.

@Callahan

PvP- Do like.

PvE- Not so much. With autoaim on *or* off the weapon seems to have some quirks. In my personal experience for having such a large and fast bullet it seems very very easy to miss anything (esp silkwings) thats moving from side to side rather then away or closer. The range leaves a little to be desired and the charge is pure unmitigated crap ( but hey it shoots really far!)

Dat demon hunting gun

Autoaim it at Devilites and Greavers; you'll be the terror that haunts their nightmares.

You want to get a kilowatt or giggawatt pulsar -->Polaris for taking out *and* interrupting howlites and puppies. Both are weak to elemental damage so any alchemer except shadowtech will work and Argent Peacemaker will work well on them too. Callahan being a pierce gun with only 2 round clip is one of the worst guns I can think of for howlitzers.

In my personal experience Polaris (3clip) or AP (6clip) is the best because they offer more chances to blow up the head when it breaks loose and flies at you.

@Bopp Fossaferox (sp?) wrote and maintained the original ask a master GS thread followed by the most current 1 of 2 written by "Mastergunslinger" whom was Dirtyharry (both users of callahan) who still checks in from time to time himself.

Only the Kilowatt pulsar lines expanded shots will straight up interrupt them (and shock them which interferes with their shooting even more :) )

The golden owl from the APs charge shot interrupts, however the charge shot is very risky to use because it roots you in place for a long time while firing *and* reloading.

My best advice is just learn to shield and walk between the fire of the howlitzers (which believe it or not is easier when shielding and moving slow because its easier not to overcompinsate) and shoot at them when you get a clearing with an elemental gun.

Polaris is bar none the best gun for howlitzers and puppies. Polyps (The slime turret) is neutral to elemental as well so you just cant go wrong with Polaris line for turrets.

Bomb-gun

If you want a gun for turrets then Polaris is what you should use, yeah. It's also superb pretty much anywhere.

what about Storm Driver?

What about Storm Driver? It shocks, and the hits are pretty hard. Do they interrupt turrets?

Edit: Lukehandkooler, thanks for the FossaFerox name. Yeah, he liked Callahan a lot: http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/5286.

I dont believe alchemer

I dont believe alchemer charges interrupt in and of themselves, however with their slot machine RnG tendencies they do potentially OHKO turrets.

The main shot from an alchemy charge will interrupt turrets.

And towers don't move, whether you manage to clip one with a charge attack depends entirely on your aim.

Fun facts

Callahan and Iron Slug are a mix of "Relatively low damage" and "Pretty useful" that is oh-so-rare in this game.

While you're not gonna be taking things down all that fast, they generally knockdown just about anything on at least the second hit, if not the first.

So, while it's kinda meh solo, in a party it gives you the ability to stunlock faster enemies for others to easily pick off. Say goodnight to devilites and wolvers, cause they're not going anywhere.

P.S.- I don't really know about Callahan, but Iron Slug's bullets have a small explosion when they hit; I've been able to hit a small crowd of 3 or 4 T3 gremlins and keep em pinned down fairly consistently.

From PvE experience

It's very low DPS compared to a Blitz Needle, but it is more mobile which makes it ideal to use it against Devilites or Alpha wolvers. I treat it like a shotgun, it just doesn't kill as fast as using a flourish or a Crystal bomb. If your a serious gunner, its worth getting for the monsters I just mentioned.

@Malokenos, the Callahan also creates a tiny explosion when it hits a tight crowd. For gremlins, Sentenza or Umbra. I don't like using the Callahan against them. Feels tedious.

I don't like to use dancing

I don't like to use dancing Callahan. I just use blitz to totally destroy devilites and wolves.
