Recon vs. Guardian

You are a T2 Recon. A Guardian is standing on a capture point that ought to belong to you. What do?

- Death Mark doesn't change the Shield's defense.
- Haze Bombs don't damage the Shield at all.
- Hit-and-run doesn't work on regenerating enemies.
- Your toothpick is slower and weaker than theirs.
- Can't jedi-mind-trick a Guardian into leaving a point they don't want to.

I run into this all the time and don't have a good solution. Does anyone have a Guardian-killing tactic, weapon or loadout?

Clip them at the very edge of your range. Depending on the guardian you are playing, either move back or dodge to the side. Or go pew pew.

As a bomber in T3... I use a good amount of Nitro or DBB spam to shove guardians, groups of guardians, or just groups of knights who are sitting on a point off a capture point. Then once I've broken their shield, I take them out with a good old toothpick or spam the base with a haze bomb of choice to keep them off. If they pull out a gun, you'll have to get good at dodging or carry your own gun. Remember, your ultimate goal is to capture and keep the point. You can try to pursue/kill them when you've finished capturing the point or if they're interfering badly with your capping and too dangerous to just ignore.

I'm not much of a bomber in T2, but maybe the same trick will work with the 3* Blast Bomb and 3* Spine Cone.

As the regular T2 player, you usualy see me in striker but when i feel trollin i go recon. to kill normal guardian,just toothpick shield cancel over them. But Guardians in T2 are so much more Balanced than Weak guardians in T3. In T2, with heart trinkets, pro guardians are almost impossibru to take down solo.

But, for recons, you can take down 2/3 guardians and strikers if you are really good. Spam bomb. haze bombs do not effect the shield, but you can drop one and hinder the guardians movement while attacking his shield with a toothpick. repeat and cloak, eventually his shield breaks and the mist bomb- best being the shock bomb- will take effect. shock stops his shield going up so much when it comes back, meaning you can kill him off.

If the Guardian's stupid:

Go to the opposite side and hit him with something. Cloak, run away, then uncloak in a feigned unsuccessful attack. Cloak while continuing to run away while he pursues you. Loop back past him. Watch him continue to follow the invisible/non-existent 'you'. CP now yours.

If he's not:
Hit him, cloak, loop behind, then combo dem with dat toofpik. Shield cancel and change position if you can.

I once managed to take out a Guardian, recon AND a Striker on the same CP with my Rocket hammer :D I got lucky with my shield-cancel timings and third-combo hits, and they were a bit sluggish to respond.

I got mowed a few second later.

This is my own opinion, and i might be playing it wrong..
but i find it's not the recon class that has the problem against guardians but pure gunners. All a recon with a sword usually has to do is;

attack, shield cancel, walk a little bit, attack, shield cancel and so on till the shield breaks.

I play t2 and the biggest problem i have encountered as a gunner are guardians.
I usually roll with with my alchemers or magnus and its really hard to break the shield. A guardian can stay on a point for ages while taking my shots but their shield dies with only three attacks from a swift flourish. Yeah i could use a pulsar and break their shield that way however that means there is only one solution for a gunner.....>_>
anyway, rant over...sorry.

Haze bombs are also pretty good against guardians. it the guardian is stuck in the haze they will most probably have their shield up, they wont attack and if they do, they get statused. Sooo while they are stuck in the haze just whack em a few times.

I play T3. Hopefully this'll help. Though maybe I should hop to T2 if guardians are such powerhouses there. :v

Keep distance and shoot guns at them. There's very little a guardian can do to retaliate against ranged attacks. Being always visible and slow, we can't return fire without giving up our ability to dodge decently, and it leaves us wide open to counterattacks. All we can do is endure. Sure, it'll take an age to kill them, but they'll die if you can actually hit the broadside of a barn (you need to keep the pressure on, or the shield will just regenerate in between attacks). Mind you, that only works with solo. It's pretty easy to kill a gunner with a teammate to distract. What do you know, teamwork in the team based game is good.

Actually, on that note, stop trying to solo people. Get someone to run with you, or follow them. My best matches, where I truly feel unstoppable, are when I got one other guy at my back. Ah, I remember when another guard and I plowed through Frostbite and held the enemy homepoint for ages. We finally died at the same time. That match was pretty cool.

I see people saying to drop mists on guardians. Know that the rapid pulsing of the thing tends to make guardians nearly invincible as long as they keep the shield up. Your attacks just phase through due to them being on invincibility frames so much. Sure, there are small windows where they aren't, but emphasis on small. 1v1, you're probably not gonna hit them, though there are the exceptions. It's only really deadly when you got two or three people attacking at once. Someone's probably gonna get a few hits in then.

I don't claim to be terribly good at LD, but as I generally play as a guardian in t3, I will say that the only time I ever have trouble with recons is when they aggressively harass you on a cap--generally a combination of dropping a haze or two, then switching to guns, then back. As others have mentioned, this situation isn't really so dangerous for the guardian, but if backup isn't on the way, and the guardian gets overzealous or annoyed, it can be tempting to pursue the recon, and that's when they are really open to a quick swipe in the back with a toothpick or a GF.

Hit them with something fast

Hit them with something fast (flourish variety), cloak, and wait for the guardian to start spamming a combo. At the end of their combo, hit them with something heavy (sealed sword, etc), cloak, rinse and repeat. Or, as Incineron said, shield cancel w/ flourish attacks while circling the guardian. They are unable to move, and while spinning to catch up to you, they can't really coordinate to attack, allowing you to kill them (somewhat) efficiently.

Also, you could just grab a gun and snipe them to death :P

Cloak, slide in, swipe once at the shield, shield-cancel/cloak, slide back, rotate around the guardian, repeat.

That, or Haze Bomb to immobilize them. They either get pissed off from holding shield while you spin around them and trie to attack you, causing them to suffer from whatever status the haze bomb is, or they just sit there like a wuss until a striker kills them (or you if the striker is an enemy striker... or you kill the striker because he would probably run through the haze bomb...)
