Before I start, I'm a linux user so anything dealing with directories for windows and mac OS is based upon forum searches. Unfortunately this won't fix the problem if you don't have the following setup to start with.
(I'm not too good with using forums yet. So if you can give me tips on how to make this a bit easier to use, please post it!)
What you need, an installed version from this page:

http://wiki.spiralknights.com/Technical_issues_FAQ#What.27s_the_whole_li...

For this to work you need to have this installed and updated prior to a patch so that when the patch comes out you will only be needing a few minutes to install the much smaller patch as opposed to reinstalling the whole game as the browser launcher seems to be doing.

When the update comes out just update the non-browser version on your computer. Note the directory it installs to!

The locations you will be copying from and to are different for every operating system and the respective versions, but here's a few install directories I found. These are where you will be copying *to* (a.k.a. the browser's cache folder):

Windows: the parentheses are my guess as to the specific version (if I'm wrong please post a correction)
C:\Users\%username%\AppData\LocalLow (Windows 7)
C:\Users\AppData\Roaming\Three Rings Design\Spiral Knights (Windows Vista)
C:\Documents and Settings\Application Data\spiral (Windows XP)

Mac OS:
~/Library/Application Support/spiral

Linux (Ubuntu using sun java 6):
home/%username%/.getdown/spiral

Once you have the update done on the non-browser version just copy the whole directory into your browser's cache folder.

I'll be watching this thread responding to the helpful posts and ignoring the unhelpful ones.

Tsk, tsk, a cadet should

Tsk, tsk, a cadet should train more to stop being a cadet.

Downloadable standalone client had even worse problems with update than other web clients.
On standalone client if i tred to close and open again update it started back from 0.
On webclients it remembered my previous progress.

I have been using standalone client to update patch since few months ago and i never have a problem

Patches always downloaded within 10mins.
Never try before to close client before patch updated, no reason to.

Just tested it side by side with a steam client

@ Asukalan: from what i've noticed, the progress bar for the web client are a bit different than the stand-alone. The web client shows the downloading starting at 70% of launching. The stand alone starts I think at 10%. Whatever the case is, I've patched all 3 client types available to the linux platform (web, stand-alone, and steam). From what I have noted, the steam client and the stand-alone are essentially the same in how they update. The difference is steam just does some of the dirty work for me by starting the client. With the more recent updates when the patching has been a problem, I have literally spent the entire rest of the day trying to get it to install through my browser. With the update posted yesterday I managed to find this solution by poking around here and there after doing a bit of research into how Spiral Knights installs. Btw, I know this is a bit of a long-winded response, I wanted to let you know my findings. Thank you for the feedback.

As for today, the stand-alone client downloaded and installed just as fast as the steam client. I can say that with confidence because I had them both running side-by-side.

In response to the recommendations for switching to steam, might I point out that the title to this thread is *A* solution, not THE solution. Although I must agree with the point about using steam. I have had no trouble with patching the steam client. What I have presented here is an alternative to having to become part of the valve collective.
To continue to advocate for the group that I am a part of, the players from Kongregate, switching to using the steam client or anything else would involve abandoning our Kongregate knight. I for one, as well as others that I am very sure exist, refuse to give up the knight that we have worked on for so long. Personally, I am not going to give up my 5 star knight that I've had since December of last year just to have it on a more readily accessible platform when there exists a method for doing what I want to do. Get back into playing Spiral Knights with my long used knight after an update comes out.
