What are the rest of status numbers?
Does Dmg have the same system?
How does the number system work when creating a script?
Since compounds are two elements mixed together, does fire and poison act as elements in Cradle? Does the "Compound" in compound 42 refer to chemicla compounds of the millitary base "Compound"?
If the order is the same as it is on equipment, then it might be
0 or 1 Stun
2 Poison
3 ?
4 Fire
5 Freeze
6 Shock
7 Curse
8 or later Sleep
but nothing fits in 3, so it might be
1 Stun
2 Poison
4 Fire
8 Freeze
16 Shock
32 Curse
64 (or 128) Sleep
if status is a single number in binary then each bit would indicate a separate status and they'd be added together.
like Freeze + Shock would be 00011000 (24)
Don't forget about the DOOM status. Ghostmane Stalkers (The invisible gremlin ninjas in OCH) can apply this to knights since they function largely like recons. And recons can obviously inflict the status in LD

Is muddle even used for anything, or is it just a leftover icon in the game files from alpha/pre-alpha?
This is the order status are show on gear. As Poison is 2 and Fire is 3, this is not the order, Nick is referring to. I guess alphabetical order suggested by Shoebox seems all right.

I wouldn't be totally surprised if there was meaning or rationale behind the numbers. Rather, it's entirely possible that the statuses were numbered based on when they were added- an artifact of the development process that was never expected to visible to the outside world.
At very least, I know that fire was available even in the early alphas (back when the Fang of Vog was awesome). I think stun might have been around then also. Not sure about the other status effects, but a quick perusal of the "Obsolete" category on the wiki shows evidence that shock resistance was available even in the early armors (second closed alpha or roundabouts).

What is the basis of this thread, other than that Compound 42 is poison- and fire-themed? Has Nick made a declaration somewhere that statuses are tied to numbers? Please help me out here.

Well, that makes sense. I was in a Wolver Den with full piercing weps but then I met a couple polyps, so I was using my Fierce Flamberg to try to inflict fire. The fire did 45 dmg. :O
