Plz Update Spiral Knights
Wait a sec... Isn't Windows 8 designed as a tablet like interface? If so then why would you use it for a laptop?
No, it's an actual OS for all Windows machines. The thing is, its still beta for PCs.
I have a high chance thinking that there will be a 'but' coming.
You should beat your brother to death with a nailed baseball bat for that.
That'll teach him.
TERS
YE ARE BAD
DON'T CORRUPT THEM KIDS
You're installing a new OS too early that some older games and software might not likely run on. Take Mame32k for example. It's playable, but there are options that you can't customize, and there might be some control issues due to it missing a dll file that the older OS had. It's best to dual install another old OS in the meantime if you want to run Windows 8 if it comes out. Only downside is that it will take up a good amount of space, I'd probably go far back as XP for this game. But Spiral Knights is probably an exception since it is continually updated by the many programmers, so there could be an update, but I don't think it'll be anytime soon. They would be more focused on content, but I guess convenience is a factor when it comes to new OS compatibility issues.
An 'easy' solution, depending on your skills is to create a partition with windows 7/xp / some linux release. Or if possible, emulate a virtual machine inside windows 8.
Lacking technical info in the OP, all I can do is share based on my own experience.
Many laptops like mine (Core i5) have Intel HD video, 1st generation (not HD 2000/3000). For gen 1 Intel HD, Intel will not be making a driver for it. Windows 8 has a driver made by Microsoft. The problem is Microsoft drivers don't support OpenGL which is what many games use, including Spiral Knights.
Bottom line is, if you have an Intel HD onboard video, you won't be able to play Spiral Knight in Windows 8, ever. If it's a laptop then you're pretty much screwed since you typically can't swap out the video card. For this reason I went back to Windows 7 on that particular laptop.
There are always hacks and unofficial patches that allow you to run OpenGL games on non-OpenGL drivers but unless you're super technical, it's not likely to happen. Like others said, dual boot with Windows 7 will be your best bet. Good luck.
I presume that either MS will fix that or some homebrew will appear in time. Because it seems like a pretty serious problem.
Just to confirm, we currently offer no support for the pre-release versions of Windows 8 currently available. This is part of the risk taken when trialing software in a beta state.
As has been already said, the problem lies with current driver support on the operating system, namely that it is also in a beta state. Even official testing drivers provided by chip manufactures may be lacking the ability to interpret OpenGL commands.
Going ahead further, it is very critical that you always check hardware support before moving to any new operating system. Some hardware vendors are taking this release as a good time to move some of their products to end of life before the launch. This means for some video products there will never be a driver release outside of the one bundled with the Operating system. If you have a problem playing Spiral Knights after moving to Windows 8 on hardware that no longer has vendor support the Spiral Knights Support Staff cannot guarantee there is a solution outside of returning to your previous operating system.
Same. He's spoken a technical cause of the problem while wearing those geeky glasses. :v
You are lucky. Darn it I wish I could make my own avatar. I would totally have a knight with green glasses. I R UBER GEEK.
And your brother is a terrible person, or just really silly for installing windows 8. Not really because of being incapable of playing the game, but mostly for his tablet interface. I mean, for crying out loud, it's a PC, not a bloody tablet... Show him this: http://www.itworld.com/software/224533/windows-8-10-biggest-problems-so-... and tell him to install back windows 7.
Lol, people install stuff before its premiere and demand to make everything work on it?
Lol, anyway, why don't you just use linux? It's free/runs faster/can run windows programs(to an extent)/is awesome.
Linux *is* superior to Windows.
Except when you are playing PC games. That's why I have both at home.
Let me fix that for you.
"Linux *is* superior to Windows. If you're not a gamer and rather a programmer. ">
"If you're not a gamer and rather a programmer." BULLCRAP.
Spiral Knights works on Linux. And so does a bunch of other games!!
If you use Wine, you can get even more to work. and not to mention Steam is coming out for Linux. :D
i think games can run better on linux, than on windows, because its rummored, windows kernel and memmory managment is just horrible.
valve port source engine to linux and it is faster. see this:

(i apologize for my bad english)
Windows 8 is not officially released yet. There's no point for OOO, or any other company, to officially support it now, when Windows 8 is still subject to change.
Also, SK runs on Java. If Java works on Windows 8, SK will too. So instead try to find out, and post details, of what's not working with Java.
You don't go to a doctor, tell him "I'm not feeling alright" and ask him to just give you medicines.
You have to tell him what's wrong with you first. The doctor will ask you questions, and you answer them. The doctor will run tests.
Same deal here. Describe what you did, step by step, to try to run SK. And what response you got, including what you saw on-screen, the error messages, log files, if any.
Also this belongs to Technical Issues, not General. Please move the thread.
P.S. Tell your brother to test alpha/beta software in a virtual machine. That's how normal/sane people do it.
