Remember these threads months ago? We are going to see some more now! Heart of Ice, thank you so much for this danger mission.
Devilites are waay 2 hard!!!11 I am going 2 start crying cuz I cant do em, not even in skolver geaR!!!1!!1 T_T
I'm actually kind of surprised I haven't seen many people complaining about HoI after so many people said they had trouble with C42.
That's because C42 has an enemy with a dash-attack that has no charge or warning and will poison you and set you on fire at the same time, while Heart of Ice isn't broken in several ways.
You'd be surprised how CTR max with a combuster helps so much. Killing as much as I can before dyeing myself. I can go ahead and use swords in which the battle will take time which would eventually mean getting killed or I could just shorten the battle by using my combuster & blasting those little devils with it in which I'd have killed them before being exposed to damage. Especially when someone else is taunting/tanking all the mobs. But being OP is boring so I'm making alternates. C42 is the only content I can't do with Chaos Cloak.
@Zed, 's why ya keep the toxoils from catching on fire, and that is also why they poison and fire and tear their own gremlin allies to shreds: they are reckless but easy to take out.
The dash might be a bit unavoidable, but with proper gear (I used shadowsun stetson + dragon scale mail + sentenza / cally) you can take that place out with little to no deaths without even using immunity to oil gear. Heart of Ice is more just wether or not you know how to take out fiends and can easily be done without adequate gear by a skilled player..... but the wolvers there are so pointless since OOO nerfed 'em to nothing.
Or.... Dark Briar Barrage AND Nova Driver!!!! http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/54686
Even a snarbolax set with 2x shadow high is not enough >.>
I can't even make it to the 2nd level without deaths.
LoA, easy. C42, easy. HoI, makes me glad I have an elevator pass.
I need need need at least one other person to distract half the monsters so I can kill things.
How do you guys solo it successful without deaths? (Other than a DBB, because I have no bomber stuff)
I use the following:
Snarby set (or a skolver/snarby mix)
Crest of Almire (Dread skelly shield to be made, if I craft a good UV.)
Toothpick
Valiance
Callahan (swapped this out for a magma, relying on a fire status is not effective)
Polaris (It has its uses, but only when you have lots of space, which isn't always the case.)
Getting a Dread Skelly shield will really help unless you can get a max freeze on CoA but really GL w/ that.
Alchemers are amazing against devilites because of how safe they are. Make sure to shoot 1 bullet -> shield cancel pause -> shoot 1 bullet -> shield cancel pause etc etc over and over so you don't reload and get bursts of full movement speed between shots with the freedom to shield whenever. Then, kite in a circle around all devilites in order to derpdodge just about anything thrown at you. Polaris works great as well, assuming there are huge packs of devilites and you are given enough room; alchemer is all around better for safety, however. Alchemers can clip split bullets into a single devilite a good 2 or 3 times on occasion if the bullet is positioned correctly, which is why Alchemers > Valiance for devilites.
My sword suggestion is to get ASI everywhere possible in your set (2 ASI medium trinkets and an ASI med UV on toothpick would be adequate with snarbolax and dread skelly shield) since the biggest thing about using a toothpick vs. an alchemer against devilites is that you put yourself in danger with a toothpick. A toothpick requires you to move in closer: this is a huge issue because if a devilite projectile is thrown at the wrong time, you are hit regardless of shielding the projectile sometimes. ASI will help eliminate this... er... "bug" since shield canceling is faster. To add, walking towards and not kiting to strafe bullets away can result in being smacked by a projectile. A toothpick also roots you in place for a moment, which won't be much of an issue asuming you have ASI.
Alchemers require less skill and have less of a reward: things die slowly.
Toothpicks require more skill and have more of a reward: things die quickly.
Blitz Needle will not work against a group of 8 devilites that have different attack patterns, if you tell me otherwise I want a video (without you getting hit of course). Great for Trojans and boss, though.
Wolvers are a joke. Trojans and Maulos aren't an issue, you have polaris for turrets, pew pew pew :) ...... or rather, pew pew PAUSE pew pew PAUSE xD
Do remember that progression does exist now since this game isn't hello kitty island adventures anymore: none of us can win right away. It will take practice and getting to know the levels themselves in order to avoid death.
I have asi vh on my toothpick, so no issue on the asi.
I'll wear two pentas for now, maybe swap out a gun damage or sword damage for one of them.
While the approach for devilites is good, my problem is when you throw in a freezing greaver or two, several chromolisks and their frost spit, a turret shooting at you and a silkwing to negate all the chip damage from guns. I will adequately dodge the close things, and then get nailed by a devilite.
Your approach to do a full circle against devilites may solve my problem, as a full circle will allow me to dodge everything else and find a best approach.
So while your answer is helpful, it may not be comprehensive enough for HoI's medley of monsters all trying to get you. I realize that I maybe should post a general thread on Heart of Ice solo approachs, since your thread is specific to devlites....
Healers and turrets always take priority. The healers remove the damage you've dealt, making them a must kill target if you can't take out the enemies quickly. The turrets release a fairly steady stream of projectiles... and don't move, making them another prime target. Them not moving also makes them easy targets for an Alchemer charge.
For the Greavers I would carry a Flourish even if you're a gunner. Swing, shield cancel, move back and swing again until they die is the most effective way I've found to deal with them with Devilites around. The Chromaslisks... just don't walk on the goo.

@Tersakoff
Yeah, maybe people finally found out how to kill fiends. I miss people's devilite rage threads T_T. Maybe one will show up /fingerscrossed. The main issue is that we can't manipulate the gates anymore, and people who can't do fiends can ignore HoI and do FSC by KoA T_T
I usually suck against Devilites, but I didn't have too much of a problem in my first group run at Heart of Ice. Now Compound 42, on the other hand...
HoI is actually easier! C42 was a pain when it first started but with continous practice, you get quite used to it. But i really see HoI being the easier of the two.
I honestly don't see how people find C42 harder than HoI, unless you're running on a system that has large lag/frame spikes when everything lights up. When C42 first came out I soloed it with two deaths (both stupid) using max fire no poison resist. Vog sets aren't really that uncommon these days, or whatever one generally uses for FSC. HoI took me three attempts to successfully solo where I gave up on an attempt after the fourth death.
The most rage inducing part of HoI for me are the Frozen Souls. I absolutely hate those things with a passion.
HoI is a nightmare for gunners. The only piercing guns we have require us to stand still rather than use them normally like the others.
"this game isn't hello kitty island adventures anymore: none of us can win right away."
Wanna know the crap thing? The game was never a Hello kitty adventure island if you had crap gear. Or at least, It's immposible to solo the Worthwhile things if you don't have the BEST gear. Thanks for the Absolute CRAP balance, OOO. <.<
Really? I thought it'd be easier for gunners if you just give up on the idea that you'd get the piercing damage bonus. It looked fairly safe and easy to Polaris down Devilites from a distance.
Edit @Tsubasa-No-Me: I disagree. Having gear certainly makes things worlds easier but doing so with entry level tier gear is definitely feasible.
Well, I do have a VH fiend alchemer but it's yet to be crafted up..
I laughed out loud at "hello kitty island adventures".in the middle of a library thanks XD
@ rest of the thread
I have to say that because of the horrendous lag that fire animations give me, the lack of poison/fire resistance, general annoyance regarding toxoils and co, I've not managed to complete c42 even once (granted I only tried twice with PUGs...) but still. My gear was perfect mask of Severus with vog cub coat... BTS and COA both r disappoint.
I shall get some dragon scale gear before I try again ~ so far I've crafted a fire med dragon scale schield. Lucky me!
Also I am so glad I have a GSS for HoI.. And a DBB fiend VH. Life savers!
On the whole it is much easier than C42 Imo.
How about a Fiend VH Valiance? Seen it used (though not on HoI); seems effective/safe enough.
...because we're actually quite plushy. Fired employees make great pillows after they're done with.
And it's our job to torment Knights. We love you guys too, in a way. Maybe as target practice?
Psh, Devilites. Back in my day those guys were a cakewalk compared to a couple of us Menders.
Well today is not way back when, huh, Mender? Because people do not yell now "Watch out! A horde of Menders! Quick, get to the elevator before they yell at us to death!"
You should still kill the Mender first. Makes slow killing with status weapons faster.
Plus, our employees' plushy goodness will give you something to think about next time you rest your head on a soft pillow.
People couldn't get to an elevator if we spawned in an Arena. Back when we could revive each other we might as well have been a brick wall.
Did a better job than any pudgy pillow could, even against a full party.
^ I'm a Bomber yes, so how would you feel if I told you I in fact own a Venom Veiller, with a random craft Gremlin Low UV just for lulz
How would I feel? With my paws, most likely.
Not like poison stopped us from reviving each other, anyway.
But combined with shock or freeze, i bet it would.
not to mention the process would go faster, due to healing being hurting when poison is in town, and menders always love to try and heal their needy teammates, oh how i love to watch them try.
or I could just bring out the DBB and turn it into a mender backflipping parade :D

Shuffle shuffle shuffle shuffle Shuffle? Shuffle shuffle Shuffle, shuffle shuffle! Shuffle shuffle Shuffle shuffle shuffle shu/ff/le shuffle shuffle, shuffle shuffle shuffle, shuffle shuffle shuffle shuffle, shuff, shuff, shuff, shuffle, shuffle! SHUFFLE SHUFFLE!
(Why isn't there a danger mission with us Shufflebots? This is discrimination against Shufflebot-kind, that's what it is! We need an entire mission with Shufflebots that deal Elemental/Piercing/Shadow damage all at once, shoot 10 Rocket Puppy rockets on every attack, and have a special move that inflicts Fire, Shock, Stun, Poison, and Curse! FOR THE SHUFFLEBOTS!)
I do want to see a microgame of devilites throwing chairs at ye and ye have to throw yer chair back at him faster than the devilite.
I am sick of getting thrown with office chairs and briefcases. They always do all those. We need some paybacks.
LOL @ Diamond. menders used to be a pain but now they kill FOR me0thanks to poison. Any how i think C24 is the hardest cause the new fire kills my FPS
Well, in a way. Those Mecha Knight puppets can be quite disturbing. I mean, would it be a nightmare for Knights to face a horde of infernal pillows or a horde of sentient tin cans, a force which you already know in Arenas?
C42 is the only mission that brought my campus internet down to its knees. I wish I couldn't say it's hard, but I can't go through its two levels without getting some kind of connection pauses or fluctuating speeds.
Maybe it's not my campus internet -- rather, it could be once of the routing servers from UK to Doha that's getting a choke. Woe is me.
Though I did found out that Heart of Ice is easier than C42.
Well, a VH fiend valiance can be much harder to find as people ragecraft alchemers more than blasters.
I use a Magma Driver for FSC to show my love for elemental alchemers ^(*O*)^
it would have to be a Shufflebot, hands down.
What is this shufflebots and alchemer talk?
I made a thread saying that I was looking forward to people crying about fiends and there has yet to be a single thread related to fiends except for my own. It is embarassing. Please let thread die xO
"It is embarassing. Please let thread die xO"
Tersakoff grins.
good thing i dont have skolver
