Heart of Ice - No Death Solo Approach Advice Needed

So I asked my question in a different thread that isn't quite on topic to what I wanted to know. So i'll make a new thread.

How do you successfully complete Heart of Ice solo, with no deaths?
For my purposes, I'm guns and swords only (unless you count a shivermist, which can freeze trojans, for the record.) I think a DBB may be the most effective strategy, but I'm not about to make a whole host of bomber gear just for this.

Gear:
- Snarby set (or a skolver/snarby mix, I haven't figured out what is best)
- Crest of Almire (Dread skelly shield to be made, if I craft a good UV.)
- Toothpick (with enough asi that I don't need more)
- Valiance (again with enough asi that I don't need mroe)
- Callahan (swapped this out for a magma driver, but relying on a fire status is not effective, but I may go back to this)
- Polaris (It has its uses, but only when you have lots of space, which isn't always the case.)
- 2 pentas (for now, maybe swap out a gun damage or sword damage for one of them)

Things I find difficult:
At the same time: Devilites + Greavers + Chromolisk Spit + Howlitzers + Freezing lost souls + silkwings

This is usually in the first level, so I've yet to make it to the 2nd level without dying. Yay for the elevator pass.

So, what's your approach?

Just go full Snarby, piercing

Just go full Snarby, piercing isn't a threat.
UVs are more or less useless on a shield. My vanilla Dread never broke outside fighting a Trojan.
No extra ASI is good enough, but if you want more, it's your choice.
Valiance has no real added. benefit here. Use Blitz with some CTR instead.
Callahan is considerably more useful due to it's flinching, speed, moderate damage, and turret-stopping power.
I use Supernova to get the most damage on all of the mobs.
You don't need more than one Penta, a vitapod will add plenty of health and the slot is better used for bonus damage.

Toothpick shuts down Grievers as you keep flinching them. Supernova is safety if you really want to keep everything away from you. Shield as much as possible and try to keep it up between attacks. Dread will take any reasonable amount of punishment for you, so feel free to rely a bit on it. Be very quick with toothpick shield cancels for safety and quicker damage. A single, well-timed Callahan shot with stop a Howlitzer. Focus on Silkwings while they're around, but if they're not, do not focus on singular mobs. Try to do some quick shield-cancel toothpick damage to as many targets (particularly Devilites and Chromalisks) as possible, and shield bump and block the rest. Do not be afraid to use auto target with Callahan or against Frozen Souls, it really helps.

And that's about I can recall.

Greavers are easily shredded

Greavers are easily shredded with a DVS/Striker series weapon, and they're always eager to get in your face, so lure them out when possible to cut them apart. When that's not the case, you just have to spam attack and dodge Devilite/Howl projectiles at a time.

If you're soloing, you'll want speed, as Fiends are flimsy enough as is. Damage will be redundant, but a sufficiently fast toothpick will be able to hit Devilites before they fire off an attack. I use Ultra, and that gives me a split second before they hit me.

Callahan's decent for picking off Devilites, but it doesn't have much other use. Sure, you can flinch and stagger everything in there, but only one/two at a time.

Valiance isn't terribly useful, it does have merit at taking down Howl heads, but that's as far as the real utility goes.

Pulsars are great for breathing room, but they distance Devilites, which is bad, and can only hold off so many Greavers.

DBB's only really good in a party, Greavers will hit too fast before you can get a detonation off.

As for your dilemma, try to lure the Greavers into an area safe from Devilite projectile fire, shred them, then prioritize the Devilites. Everything else should then be fair game. In addition, Freezing Souls appear in only a handful of areas, but treat them as you would Greavers. After that, murder Howls and then whatever's still walking around.

Easy in my view but load out different

Divine Avenger --- For greavers pushback makes it 20x's easy to kill them.

My load out is semi-elite, so it kinda makes solo'ing the mission without deaths a bit easy.

Interesting thoughts, i'll have to try out different tactics

@Dukeplatypus
Good to know for the dread skelly shield. I was hoping for a decent pierce just so in case i get caught out on spikes, need to tank the chromalisk spit or something. Normal may help for the trojans. but we'll see.

While the flinch from the callahan is nice, I'm finding it a bit slow, even with a shield cancel. Mine has asi med and i'm not wearing gunner. Do you have a faster asi? or do you just make sure all the devilites have finished attacking before you shoot so you don't get caught off guard.

Supernova sounds like it's the ideal gun since it'll damage the beasts too. I may consider making one...

Thoughts on which damage trinket to do? i'd do the sword if i can kill things in 2 hits vs 3... i guess i'll test it out. if that's not the case, then I'll go guns. Got any data on this?

I favour the valiance because i can get two quick shots off and shield again before getting hit. But I'll see if I can find some other combination to work well (like a driver, or practicing my timing with the callahan.)

@Arctifice
Interesting idea with the DVS on the greavers, but I'll probably stick with shield canceling a toothpick at them, since I can at least shield.

I'll probably have to play the distance game as much as I can when dealing with greavers + other things, but I find there's only so much space at some time.

Interesting thoughts on the DBB. I hadn't considered how it wouldn't be effective when solo.

@Njthug
Unfortunately, my DA doesn't have ASI, so I'd be easily caught dead, even with first swings. It sounds like you succeeded in soloing it, mind if I ask how you deal with the myriad of monsters with just a DA? Do you do a lot of circling and and just wait for a good time to 1st swing?

You've piqued my interest on your loadout making it easy. Care to expand on that?

Random advice

With a Flourish line sword you mostly want to stick with single swings and cancelling when Devilites are around. Sometimes you can get away with two swings before cancelling but the third will leave you too open to attack unless the only remaining foes are the target of your attacks.

The best way to handle Greavers in a messy area in general is to kite them back and swing one + shield cancel whenever they lunge at you, while continually moving backwards. If there's an area you can use to block line of sight from ranged (Howlitzers and Devilites) then hang out there while you deal with Greavers for as long as you can. Kite kite kite.

For Devilites and Silkwings you can just run in large circles around them, close in when it's safe to for a quick swing + cancel and then continue running in a circle for another loop. Devilites throw are easily flinched and their melee takes a while so this is fairly safe if done properly. You can use the same approach for Howlitzers too though you have to be more careful about when they'll shoot. Since they're stationary and you don't need to worry about them dodging into the path of your circle it's better to just shoot them if you have a gun.

As a general rule you want to avoid staying shielded for too long a period. Moving slowly for too long will leave you vulnerable to being easily surrounded and it's pretty critical that your shield isn't broken if you're ever frozen.

Frozen Souls. I hate them. So very much. As far as I can tell, you want to run away from them as much as possible. They take a while to explode once they're near you (shake for a couple of seconds) but from what I've noticed, despite what it says on the wiki, once they start shaking they explode when hit and that explosion can hurt you. While you can hit them with a sword and be outside the explosion range, sometimes they spawn on you and start shaking immediately. If you don't hit them they won't explode immediately (they'll shake a bit first) so just run though them (if needed) and away from them. Shielding and crawling away from them seems sub-optimal, per the previous paragraph.

In general my priority goes something like this: run around a while if my shield is at all damage, kite and kill Greavers, then kill Silkwings, Howlitzers (if Silkwings are far enough from a Howlitzer I'll sometimes opt to kill these first), Devilites, Wolvers, everything else. If opportunity presents itself to easily kill something in that list (like Wolvers since they can teleport to you while everything else is far away) I take advantage of that. Wolvers are sometimes annoying in large amounts since they can teleport directly in the way of where you were running but otherwise aren't much a threat.

Think that's pretty much it. The boss is easily enough to not have to spoil, and more fun seeing for yourself.

@Dorael

I've done this in pairs and groups no problem, so don't worry about spoiling anything xD

It's just when I'm doing a no-death solo where I'm having trouble.

Your last paragraph was useful, I may need to be more methodical in my approach as opposed to trying to attack and dodge everything at once.

I have noticed the same things with the frozen souls. A fast gun is useful for taking them out, but if you don't run with guns, then running away seems best. Them exploding when you kill them is very frustrating.

Hmmm...

In order to succeed in Heart of Ice...

1. Fill out the Job Application
2. Take a survey with an IT Guy (perhaps even Tohru)
3. Equip the Vitasuit and Fractured Masks of Seerus.
4. Head over to Amu- Sol.
5. Accept the vendor's requests as he throws furniture at you.
6. Get through the security measures.
7. Head to the coliseum, where a welcome committee and special training will assist you.
8. Take your application through Maulos's supervision.
9. ???
10. Profit.

Try dodging a few flying weapons and you'll be fine. Now, back to reading yet another book...

@Njthug

How is knockback a good thing for grievers...?

They flinch if you hit them with anything, so why not use a piercing sword to kill the thing?

Is greAt for solo both on devilites and grievers. Charge, set it down, shield bump grievers away and they fly back in in time to eat it. Mine does have vh CRT, so it helps with causing DPS. But even without, if you can dodge devils (easy to do, they catch you when you stop moving and stand still to attack) then you can handle them. Just weave around while charging and then lay ur bomb down and go back to weaving.

And again, treat ur grievers as described above.
