I wanted to make a thread based on my experience and why I think it's needed

For those of you who don't know I came to spiral knights via an article on yahoo I came across.
http://games.yahoo.com/blogs/plugged-in/seven-free-online-games-worth-pl... - While the part on spiral knights was small it caught my interest, and 1 year and 3 months later still here.

Without that article it's safe to say I wouldn't have came to this game. I didn't really get into steam until spiral was added to steam games. Now the reason I'm bringing this up is well I think we need a player infusion. Back when Spiral knights converted to steam you couldn't put stuff in the auction house fast enough. Literately anything was selling and quickly too. The game however couldn't hold onto that amount of players, but it was an exciting time for spiral knights. I'm not saying we need another Steam explosion but it be nice to get some more players in the game.

Why I bring this up:
I'm a trader I have a good grasp of what is selling and what isn't. However lately things are just hitting rock bottom. Example: Being Ctr Vh brandish and Asi vh Lockdown weapons dropping around 15-20kce in price. This is probably because most people who wanted this stuff already have it. The demand for these items have hit rock bottom. I see players lately on trade chat just selling the same things over and over again stuff that should have been sold a long time ago. How do I know this? well for one I watch the Trade chat religiously. I have a grasp on who is selling what and who is buying what. I wouldn't be able to make money if I didn't. I have also had talks to other big traders around the game, and they all told me how difficult it has been for them to sell anything. I have resorted to now just putting all my stuff on auction house. I miss the player interactions the haggling and so forth. We need to instill new demand which would only help everyone. 000 gets new customers, lockdown gets more players, traders have more people to sell their stuff to and so on.

000 or Sega needs to put out more ads for spiral knights. Let get the word out on this great game. I am sure there are people out there like myself who a year ago was looking for a new game to play. If their are ads out there I sure as hell haven't come across them. If you find any I sure as heck like to see them.

This thread is purely based on my experience and my thoughts. Don't treat it as fact because there is no way I can monitor the whole economy, but I do feel we are in a recession so to speak.

Well,

In truth there are multiple reasons for this phenomena. First, as you correctly stated, there is a saturation of super gear, and seemingly the infusion of new players is continually dwindling. With more players in the mature stage of the game, and less players in the beginning of the product lifecycle, there is more and more Great UV gear up for grabs, and its being sold to a smaller and smaller population base.

But as much as anything, the decline in merchanting is spurred on by OOO's ever continuing war on player to player economy. The updates read like a roadmap of economic destruction. There has been an incremental shift of gameplay, always with a reasonable explanation on its surface, designed towards the erosion of player to player economy. (many of these if you view at the macro level, become completely contradictory to one another).

**B*inding, took away the infancy of merchanting (didn't want people to be able to buy their way to endgame)

***Unbinding (contradicts above. just as easy as ever, but a heck of a lot more expensive)

***HoH took away the market for recipes.

***Supply Depot crippled the ability to make a profit off selling 5* gear (didn't kill, but certainly crippled). Also, now OOO has directly set it up to where its now even easier to buy your way to endgame, specifically if you don't do it from another player. --still, we had the after market for UVs, since u don't get those from supply depot.

***Featured Auctions--all these items were supposed to be in lockboxes...if they really were, players could find them, and sell them. Instead, millions of lockboxes were opened, and virtually none of these items ever came to be. Then OOO creates featured auctions, cutting out any player to player interaction in this market.

***UV locking. Triple OOO was able to skim the market off the top. Taking as many crowns as possible from those willing to double and triple roll (since you could never lock a UV). In affect, this was predatory pricing. Milk the top for as much as you can, then once thats done....TADA! You can now lock UVs. Nevermind all the money essentially (retroactively) wasted on double and triple rolling, rather than getting one max UV and locking it. They already had those players crowns, time to discard them and their investments and go after a fatter market.

***UV tickets. And now UV tickets are being flooded into the market at every turn, further depleting the value of UV'd gear.

***Promo Items being rehashed in the Featured Auction House. So then, players got wise and started merchanting promo items, investing in them, and selling them later. But even that has been undercut, as these rare promo items are now being resold, and with little cool down, on the featured auction house as well.

There are other examples, i'm sure, as i've just spit-balled these off the top of my head. But the long and short of it is, OOO is attempting to make the self-sustained merchant knight nearly impossible. What they desire is that the only way to sustainably play is to run clockworks. You earn that 120 ce for every 100 ce you spend (or whatever the math is on it). Why? Because you'll never get rich stocking shelves. You'll never get rich running clockworks, thus you'll HAVE TO spend money to truly get ahead (or get a super rare and wondrous accessory/weapon). There were too many intelligent merchants that were able build up vast amounts of wealth in game, without ever lifting a finger to punch in their CC numbers.

But the truth is, they have erred badly. The merchant class did for them the exact thing they are attempting to do for themselves. The merchant class, by amassing great amounts of wealth) was effectively siphoning it up from the bottom. Every CE/crown they accrued was one created by someones CC. (and no the merchant class is not evil and should not be vilified, as they were not ripping people off. Every trade made was one that the both parties were happy with, and made the game more rewarding and enjoyable for both parties. They were a conduit of fun and enjoyment, and served a vital function to the economy of the game.)

So as Merchants sold great items to people at prices that made them smile, they also created a crown/ce vacuum. That same vacuum OOO now tries to create by washing away the economy for all of us. That vacuum created by the merchant class was filled in the same way, someone somewhere opened up their wallets. And did so happily. I'd argue it was a richer experience for both, as the paying player was darn sure having fun with his new toy(s). But under triple O's new non-economy, i thin its a sadder existence, since you are paying to avoid disenjoyment (the grind) rather paying to gain enjoyment.

And finally, it drives the whole game to a place that is more anxious and tedious. With no player to player economy, the game is stagnant; the economy is stagnant. It is not a mere coincidence that CE prices hover at a rate of 2-3000 more crowns per hundred than they used too. In a player to player driven economy, the crown flow was great. The movement of crowns, CE, and gear from one to the next was constant. It was a flourishing economy. The low price of CE, if you look at it over the history of Spiral Knights, is directly related to how active and flourishing the game is. The high price of CE is directly related to how stagnate the game is.

Take the release of Danger Missions for example (or introduction of new gear) seemingly, both of these would make more CE needed by all, thus everyone would WTB, and CE would sky-rocket. But really, those things breathe fresh air into the game, and cause the turnover of goods, ce, and crowns as people gear up, and just generally become more active. This increased life in the game and increased commodity trading is almost always rewarded with lowering ce, or at the very worst stabilizing CE.

tl;dr
OOO is shaving away any player driven economy as quickly as it can. As soon as it sniffs out an opportunity that players are using to make wealth (particularly high levels of wealth) They snuff it out. The slow death of this economy contributes to the ever rising cost of CE.

just an ex-merchants opinion.

While I don't deny 000 takes away anything profitable. I still think that this game could very much benefit from a player infusion. Maybe some well known video game reviewing sites could post some articles on spiral knights. Sega should ask igns, gamespots of the world to take a look-see at spiral knights. Wow players who quit are always looking for a new MMO. Who knows maybe they would like the f2p aspect of spiral compared to the 15$ monthly fee of WOW.

Most definitely. I can't remember when I last saw a Spiral Knights advertisement, but that in itself says its own. In fact, the times I did see and recall them the most was during the preview event!

Hey guess what? I took a

Hey guess what? I took a half-year break from the game and when I come back what do I see?
4 caliburs with any UV (unique variant) on AH
That was the first "WTF?!" ring. Thing is: as long as I played, there were no less than 100 caliburs (the basic weapon) on AH with a UV. The most expensive were often High CTR or better, with tens of Lows. Yeah, its kind of hard to obtain a calibur with a good UV these days (especially after you spend all of the CE you had accumulated in 9 months).
The next "WTF?!" ring was I saw Sealed Sword CTR VH going for around 12k ce. From more than one seller. I expected them to sell for 25k ce at the very least, same as when i stopped playing.
The third and the last ring was snarby piece with Fire MAX going for around 10k ce on AH. This is just ridiculous, as I myself sold more than one of these for over 20k ce without AH (Fire High UVs sold for more than 10k ce!).

In short: player base has shrinked a great deal and its not expanding any more. I hope you see that, dear devs.

Yes, this game needs good advertising, but more than that it needs more *NEW* content. Expansion mission was a good piece of that new content. But one expansion mission and two danger missions in what, 9 months? Even COD game makers aren't THAT lazy!

Spiral Knights need more, new content. For example:
new damage type
new weapons
new armors
Tier 4
The core
whatever, other than lockdown maps and new costume items. Real content that takes a while to master and is more rewarding that current levels. It doesn't have to be "more challenging", it just has to be.
Also, new tier 1-3 content with like 3-6 new bosses would be a welcome addition to newbies. More tier 1 bosses, more tier 2 bosses, more tier 3 bosses. Mini-bosses at gates without real bosses. New level design. New items, new armors, new costumes, new ways to play. Go, invent something, don't expect me to start paying $$ again for NOTHING!

Thanks in advance :)

If I was in charge of marketing here, I would spend all my marketing dollars on YouTube adds. The lions share would be spent for adds before people could watch a YouTube video in other MMO's--specifically free ones. Next, I'd have adds that had to be watched before video reviews (for major game websites, namely ign and the like.) Finally, with what was left i would have my adds run before random video game youtubes, and maybe some more popular anime/cutesie type stuff.

I'd do it all through YouTube, as then I could focus my demographic to both gamers who are after MMO's, but as well as to the gamers who are looking for mindless ways to spend time. That's a large part of what drew me to it.

Short parenthesis from a

Short parenthesis from a French player: the GM who was hired to manage the french community, and who I guess paid for it, doesn't speak a word of French. He uses Google translation. I consider this a complete waste of budget when you know that the game is hosted on clouds, unadvertised, that every updates take 12 hours for Europeans to download, that the amount of developpers is apparently not able to handle the whole load of work required to maintain the game in proper shape.
End of parenthesis.

Thanks for the feedback. While the game isn't dieing I think it's indeed far from what it once was. All I have to do is check my friend list to really know. I have 250 friends and at times about 30-40 would be on. Now I'm lucky to get 15 on at a time. Most of my friends that quit the game have been replaced too. It was just something I noticed while logging on everyday. I just think a little advertising would go a long way towards helping everyone. To the players in the game to 000's pockets. I think I might email a Ign worker on possibly reviewing spiral knights.

Spiral Knights in Chinese

Official website for Hong Kong and Taiwan. Apparently they started beta on August 9th.

This is their Youtube advertising.

I'm guessing they are on separate regional servers. So they won't be playing with us. What this could mean is that it would drain some people from the NA and EU servers in the future.

According to the story page on the above website, there are some elements that are not revealed on the English page:

  • the Skylark crash landed because it was attacked by an unknown enemy;
  • all the supplies on Skylark were lost during the assault and crash landing;
  • the Alpha Squadron disappeared but we knew they were attacked by unknown monsters.

So the unknown enemies are the Swam? It looks like they are orbiting Cradle too.

...

Holy crap the official website for Hong Kong is way cooler!

And yeah... more ads would be cool. But not the forced ones at the start of a youtube video. I hats those.

BULLLL.....

That first one is BULL. We all know the friggin' ship's core exploded! Suddenly for an unknown reason!

Second one we all know through info through about: "Their equipment stores have been raided ".
Probs through scavengers.

Third, we know that through the Core module.

Hahahah.

Everyone does. Just like everyone hates commercials on TV. But that would be their most effective avenue, I believe. The marketing director for OOO should be worried about what gets the most eyeballs of their target demographic per dollar spent, not what YouTube watchers find annoying.

The idea is to go out and find people who might like your game and be willing to try it, people who otherwise would never have known it existed.

Yea just saying

SK did get some decent promotion in South East Asia. From the various feedback I have been reading from beta testers in SEA, they seem to like SK.

I don't know how much lag behind their contents have though. They already have Shadow Lairs. But don't think they have Legion of Almire yet. So it could be that we (the NA and EU servers) are the final frontier, the guinea pigs to test out all the dangerous, volatile contents! D:
