A couple of months ago I started having random system crashes (BSOD and the like) related to some part of the ATI driver package, regardless of whether I was playing SK, another game, or for that matter just clicking on something in Windows. Today I was advised to completely re-install the drivers, which I did without any major problems. All games (specifically, Alien Swarm and Supreme Commander) worked perfectly. However, when attempting to start SK I got the following message.
We were unable to initialize the game's graphical display. Please take the following steps to ensure compatibility:
Visit the technical support forum for up-to-date information and suggestions.
Make sure your system satisfies the game's minimum requirements.
Update your video drivers.
Ensure that hardware video acceleration is fully enabled.
I followed all steps in the initial tech support thread: checked the drivers (current), checked Java (current), then uninstalled SK using the Steam client and re-installed. There has been no change. The message is unhelpful, as DirectX video acceleration is online and the drivers are fully updated. What's going on?
I don't know why this is the way it is (and it certainly doesn't make any sense to me), but using Steam's AMD driver updater patched in something that allowed SK to run. Very strange. Sorry for taking your time.
