This actually just caught my eye. Yea, that big golden arc stretching across cradle. I believe that it could possibly be an interesting addition to the game through a variety of methods (mission, new area, or boss stratum). For the purpose of this reading, I will define it simply as a new area for exploration. for those who may decide tl;dr on this, zoom to the bottom of the post for a short and sweet summary
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This will be split into several parts for the sake of keeping things clean, so lets begin

  1. appearance
To keep the usual top-down view of spiral knights, the whole of these levels will be viewed with the top of the arch "cut-away" or otherwise invisible. The outside of arch (background) will be decorated with clouds and at some times aerial view of haven's surface. The pathways themselves will be the same sort of yellowish gold that is seen in the above linked image. Gates in this area (such as areas with group buttons, or 'ambush' destroy-all-the-enemies areas) will be sliding doors.
  2. entrance/moving from/ leaving stratum
the entrance and exit will both be a large, gold/yellow elevators that are fancier than the normal lifts. They have a full back and sides, and a full grate comes across the front when they close. In the elevator that leads to the first level of this stratum, the elevator goes upward -- moving up to the main body of the arch. The elevator leading to the next stratum on the last level of this one will appear the same, just moving down like a normal elevator.
The levels in between will have their elevator replaced with a large ornate (decorated) door. When everyone moves to in-front of this door, it will slide open, and the floor will move, pushing the knights through it, and the door will slam behind them.
  3. Enemies
    • gremlins: pending stratum, all the types you would expect on a gremlin map -- more focused on attack than healers.
    • different construct type enemies i.e. scuttlebots, retrodes, and gun puppies
  4. sub-types (these names are subject to change -- I suck at this part)
    • static skydeck: electrical hazards and enemies
    • chilling arches: ice hazards and enemy subtypes
    • poison in the air: poison hazards and enemies
    • burning skies: fire hazards and enemies
  5. notes
I appreciate any and all feedback on this, I understand this idea, like all ideas, is not perfect, so if you do not like anything -- just say it and why, and I'll try to work on changes that will improve the quality of the stratum.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
so basically, the elevator at the end of one stratum is all shiny and gold, and when you step inside of it, it flies you up instead of down. The levels are all inside of the arc, which is mainly gremlin with some automatons. These hallways will have a "ceiling cut away" view, with clouds and glimpses of haven outside. The hallways will be the sort of gold/yellow seen in that shot from the top, and be more puzzle oriented than "fight through" oriented, since the arc itself is of fairly straight construction. All levels except for the last will end at a HUGE door that will open and push the knights through, its pretty much the elevator to the next level. On the final floor of this area, there will be a gold elevator similar to the one that lead to the first level, that, when stepped upon, will move downward similar to the usual elevators, and then you move onto whatever the next stratum would be.

im sorry

but to help me better this idea, or make sure that any of my ideas in the future are better, could you explain what you do not like about this?

I'd guess that OOO already has some sort of planned explanation for that thing. SK is pretty much entirely about the stuff BELOW the surface, and I don't really see a reason to change that. Though I thank you for actually taking some time on this.

As for leafblader, I think the lights you are seeing are actually the holes in cradle's surface, with the lights of the clockworks shining through.

I always thought it was the

I always thought it was the axis of Clockworks. You know like a globe, except it how Clockworks revolves. Nothing special. Just another piece in the ever-perplexing machine that is the Clockworks.

Further Proof...

On a globe, that "golden arc" is called a semi meridian. It is what allows a globe to properly represent the tilted axis of the Earth while still spinning on it's polar axis.

I would say that it is probably called the same thing on the Cradle, and that it is further proof that the Cradle is an artifical construct rather than a naturally occurring planet.

As for it's purpose, it's possible that it actually maintains the Cradle's tilted axis. Theoretically the Cradle's axis could shift about dramatically and erratically without the semi meridian in place to maintain balance and order.

Contrariwise, it might serve no other purpose than pure decoration.

ah, thanks for the name crimson -- i had no clue on that

but, that does give an interesting concept for its purpose. If the planet itself is an artificial construct, and the meridian is to keep the planet in proper 'alignment' as it were, then damage sustained to the meridian could put the planet itself in danger. Maintenance crews dispatched to repair damage from any debris as well as keep systems functioning would fit...

@Addison: I'm sure OOO has something for it, but how fleshed out that is may vary. I would also like to thank you for thanking me about the whole taking-my-time thing. I try to keep up appearances. My real reason for thinking of this is that I just cannot imagine something that huge and cool looking going to waste -- even if the game IS primarily underground but, cmon, giant golden glistening sky arch just screams adventure.

Spiral Knight reminds me of DOOM.
Your on a planet, you kill monsters, go into the elevator, go down, kill more Monsters, find the elevator, go down, kill monsters, find elevators, go down, etc.
Why not go UP for a change? I see nothing wrong with it. Levels look more hi tech, some robots coming at you, you kill it and loot come out....now its reminding me of Star Wars Lego...

/shout HOW ORIGINAL IS THIS GAME???!!!!!

lol

i agree! there should not be a limit to where this game can go. so if there were ever an elevator to go up in this game, this is a good enough reason. :)

And vice versa: Imagination

And vice versa: Imagination is for people who can't grip reality. One can't overwhelm the other. There must be balance.

Besides, I was kidding. Yes I believe this game needs some new stuff. However, I do not think this is the way to do it.

well then

as I suggested in my original post, a good way to help me improve my suggestions in the future is to tell me what you feel is wrong with the current one. That way I can avoid pitfalls in the future -- but cryptic messages about upward elevators work just as well.
