Determining what players want.

So right now the big thing that the players don't like is the changes to the radiant sun shards and ionized salt bomb lines. Now, Njthug tells me that this isn't so, and that lots of players are fine and happy with the new bombs, etc.

But that isn't what I'd like to talk about. There is a reoccurring problem with the forums- that many of us write things so that the game can be improved but cannot back up any of our claims because of this apparent selection bias caused by us being "the forums". So rather than just forever be happy and not continue to argue, we should obviously overcome this problem so that we can once again have lengthy discussions that go somewhere other than 'something from the whiny forums'.

So like I said, the idea that we are "wrong" and "whiney" comes from the fact that we are just random players drawn to the forums, and that we are a small group of players. But: Who SHOULD be the ones giving input? Obviously those who are effected by a change to the game that have enough information to come to conclusions, meaning that in the context of the shard bombs, wealthy bombers who have enough bombs to come to conclusions. Asking say, a swordy or gunner isn't going to provide accurate feedback, as neither of them uses a bomb, until you consider that they are directly effected by the bomb… this further limits us however to players that use both bombs, guns, and everything, as they are the only ones who can gauge the effectiveness of the weapon, although other people's feedback is also good due to the fact that they are seeing the bomb from a certain context. Do the gunners like the change? Why? Do the swordys? Why? Etcetera.

I suppose what I'm saying is that we need a way to communicate and classify players on a large scale. I am suggesting that someone from a larger guild volunteer some of their time and try to get some of their guild members to poll the opinions of the masses fairly. Record names, opinions, thoughts, everything about the player in question. Doing so would allow us to say things like 'most gunners favor the changes done to RSS' and 'most bombers dislike the changes made to RSS', if that is the case. Keep in mind that it isn't as daunting a task as one might think- to represent a fair portion of the player base, one would only need to measure a sample of the actual population, and that the population need only consist of certain knights that meet the requirements determined.

Until someone does this, the only measure we have is the forums and what the devs tell us, and as such the argument "The player-base doesn't feel this way" should not hold any weight as the forums are the only way to measure what the players want.

Please read the thread entirely and understand that the references to the shard bombs are only intended to say why this is apparently necessary.

100% of my guild doesn't like

100% of my guild doesn't like the RSS update. I have plenty of friends that don't, some that have recently quit. I know some players in Unity don't like the RSS update. I can keep going but why bother. Not everyone visits the game forums. I wouldn't listen to anything Njthug says or even take it too heart.

To help you guys out you would need over 2,500 different screenshots from overall active players who played with both bombs. So I would use this method:

1. Talk to a player
2. Ask them if they used the old Rss and Isb
3. Ask them if they like the changes and if they think any of it could be improved
4. Screenshot that conversation + gear as well (since lets be honest some kids might just take screen-shots off their alts)
5. Post that and get over 2,500 people supporting this claim
6. Hope you are lucky and Three Rings listens to you.

Oh, and I forgot to mention I think over 100+ kids back when the energy system was added to this game in beta threw a huge fight over it many of them quit this game, and many players even today hate this energy system, I would even say that most of the players rather play this game without spending a dollar just have access to every accessory etc, but lets be honest Three Rings will not do that since its not in their best interest. Nick already posted the bomb was changed due to:

The current shard-style bombs are functionally, not very bomb-like. They are the standouts in the system we’ve tried to build whereby: guns fire bullets, bombs create areas of damage, and swords do a mix of the two.

Now, don't get me wrong, but the system Three Rings has been working on the Rss and Isb (the lonely bomb which rarely gets mentioned) did not fit into the system they are trying to build.

Anyways Good Luck with your task have fun taking a lot of screenshots =)

I like it, I think it's fun playing around with it. What's the big deal?

They can just use the surveys.

1. This isn't about shard bombs; its about polling the player base. I updated the OP to reflect this.

2. "They" can use surveys all they want, but "They" don't care whether certain things get changed and "They" are not the ones who are having this discussion, nor do we even know if "Their" survey system allows us to poll and sort players based on play style, hours in game, and whether or not the players own what.

3. In order for us to actually do this, I would to talk about creating a protocol, kind of like what NJ has done but less snarky and more based on getting somewhere for major arguments. I am also hoping for certain people to agree to help with this; I would be glad to, but I can't talk to 2,500 people, as NJ pointed out, and would need the help of preferably 100+ people; a guild, if you will.

If I

If I wanted to hear about what the players thought were best for the game and how the developers have ruined everything I'd go to the Diablo 3 or World of Warcraft forums. In a heated thread it takes less than an hour to get drowned out by hundreds of posts that all think they know what's best about everything.

As to the bombs, it's not a change wrought from balance issues. There are certainly more unbalanced weapons (both overpowered and underpowered). They didn't like how the old bomb acted. No, it doesn't matter to them how much you liked it. Yes, you're entitled to hate it as much as you want. Yes, you're entitled to voice your opinion. No, you probably shouldn't spam the same message over and over again when it was already received the first time. No, it probably doesn't matter how many people like or dislike the old and/or new bomb.

Finally, if the new bombs are underpowered then that's completely unrelated to the old bombs, and they simply need to be rebalanced like many weapons likely still do.

I will agree with you that these new bombs need a boost in strength for sure, and I wouldn't mind seeing the second explosion (of all shards) be a bit faster, but besides that these bombs are not so bad (personally, I do like them pretty good in parties *some of them due to the damage output which is the huge issue*). Anyways, we must as well wish Fehzor best of luck with his 2500+ screenshots and such.
