Ok, I guess this will be a pretty noobish question, so sorry for being such a noob (just started playing so cut me some slack). So when I click the start button for the very first mission you get when you get to the camp it tells me I haven't got enough energy to do it, how do I get energy for it? I've talked to pretty much every one in the camp and still can't start it.

What Jiker says is exactly right, but let's be a little more welcoming.
Every day you get 100 mist energy (ME). You can use this to adventure, collect crowns and other treasure, etc. Using crowns, you can then buy crystal energy (CE). Alternatively, you can use real-world money to buy CE quickly. Read the energy page on the wiki, to learn more.
Eventually, your playing in Spiral Knights reaches a positive feedback loop, where you're earning crowns faster than you can spend energy. That's great. Until then, you should view Spiral Knights as a game that you play for an hour or two each day.

It's actually a bug.
This is before the energy bar even appears.
Move to the bug reports forum.
Read the wiki. Energy is what this game is based on.
Also use the search bar. This question has been asked before.
