Operation Crimson Hammer: Should I Buy It?

I haven't played Spiral Knights since late December 2011. I have to say, the game has been completely updated since I last came.
Now on topic:
Should I buy the DLC pack?
http://store.steampowered.com/app/206521/
I asked some people in-game and they said it's a good way to get Level 5 Weapons fast.
So I have a few questions:
1. Can people who didn't purchase the DLC play with me?
2. How difficult are the stages?
3. Can a shield be equipped with the Rocket Hammers?
And again, is it worth it?
Thanks in advance!
-Giovi

I bought OCH a week ago. Personally, I'd say no, because all you really get is just a new weapon, a bomb, and a helmet meant for gunners. But, if you have a job you can earn 6 bucks US easily (minimum wage from where I live is $10).
1. Can people who didn't purchase the DLC play with me? No, they cannot
2. How difficult are the stages? Harder than Roarmulus/RJP, easier than Vanaduke
3. Can a shield be equipped with the Rocket Hammers? Of course, any weapon can be equipped with a shield.

if you are hesitant about spending real cash, you can buy it from someone else from steam trade.
Good way to have weapon level 5 fast if you don't care being a burden with other party members assuming you don't have appropriate loadout. (3 star stuff and doing tier 3)
Warmaster Rocket Hammer is just another sword if that's you're asking?

Ok I think I'll buy it in a couple of days. And you guys are acting like $6 is a lot. I could probably find 6 dollars on the streets in 2 days ^_^
Now all I need to do is gather a couple of people who have the DLC......

1. Sadly, no
2. The stages can be reasonably difficult, I had serious trouble the first couple times through. It's best to play the low-tier ones first, just so you can get a feel for the new enemy types. If you want some help, let me know ;)
3. Yes.
I feel obligated to add that the Rocket Hammer is by far one of the most useful weapons I own. It does pure elemental damage, and its knockback is simply beautiful. It's my favorite zombie smasher. The lunge is difficult to get the hang of, and if you're not used to it, it can get you in serious trouble, but this is more than offset by the DPS.
The bomb, even post-nerf, is a wonderful jelly blender.
The mask is wonderful if you're a gunner. Even if you aren't, it guards against fire and shock, which are the worst damage types IMO

Thanks for the info about the difficulty and the Weapons.
Also, its sad that you can't just gather some friends and host a party so they can play levels with you. I guess it's reasonable that the other person needs the DLC. Still, I think its going to be a hassle finding someone who has the DLC.

I would honestly say that Crimson Hammer Tier 3 is harder than Firestorm Citadel. In FSC you're more likely to die from walking into the fire than the actual mobs themselves, and that's assuming you walk into the fire in the first place.
Rocket Hammer is great.
I personally enjoyed Crimson Hammer, and it costs about as much as a decent meal, except it's permanently applied to your entire account instead of a one-time use or something.

Since Three Rings nerfed OCH.. FSC is faster heat and much faster crowns. Unless you just want the gear and the gunner helm don't spent your money on OCH. Also don't buy OCH from steam, just buy it straight from the support section of the Spiral Knights website so you don't need to waste time downloading a fake DLC.
No they must also have bought OCH to play with you.
OCH is also harder than FSC.
Yes shields can be eqipped with the Rocket Hammers.

1. No :[
2. The stages themselves aren't so bad, but the new enemies are pretty annoying to deal with. If you can get someone with a shivermist, that helps immensely to deal with the recons and mortafires. You want a Polaris or something since you'll be dealing with rocket turrets spawning behind chest-high walls where things like brandishes can't reach them, as well. In T3, the boss is kinda cheap and I feel like there's too much stuff thrown at you at once. The battle is also subject to lag. It's nothing that can't be bypassed with an energy revive or two. You'll be really noticing it if one or two of your teammates are dragging you down.
3. Yes.

1. Nope.
2. It's pretty hard. The Mortafires are irritating as hell if you're trying to solo without any bombs to help you out, and you will be wanting guns. For the love of all that is holy, don't bring a Blitz Needle; you want a Nova Driver or AP on this one. I also found Acheron to be invaluable. Also, note that the lag can be worse than RT. In t3, avoid t2 morons trying to get a 5* weapon at all costs. Also, pack lots of elemental defence and fire resistance. A Vog set is your best friend here. I found it to be harder than FSC. You may also wish to watch a video of the run, just to get a general idea of what to expect.
3. OOO did not incorporate two-handed weapons. You're able to use a shield with the Rocket Hammer. Also, it is a ttly boss weapon and makes all the blood, sweat and tears worth it. The shadow bomb, though... it's debatable.

Why not buy it from Steam. Is buying it from the website safer? Also, if I buy it via Steam does the DLC link to my account or is it just sitting there in Steam?

Actually I change my mind, buy it from steam if you want it so Three Rings can't have all the money. :p

GIVE ALL THE MONEY TO BASED GABEN!!!111!!
Joking aside, both ways are fine. As for your questions:
1- No
2- Yes, dealing with pesky gremlin twackers that 1hit you with their cheap spin attack are harder than slags that sit there for 50 minutes just to try to swipe you. And that's the least of the unpleasant surprises. Ironically, it's less rewarding than FSC.
3- Yes, funny thing is that you wield the hammer the same way as a sword, instead like gremlins do with their hammers. Which i find silly, since you can't just reach the rocket's trigger with just one hand.

"dealing with pesky gremlin twackers that 1hit you with their cheap spin attack"
If you use the wrong equipment.... Full ancient pretty much lets you tank stalkers. Any elemental armor will do just fine against everythign else.
Menders do the dirty work for you with some poison.

...they get close to you, do that smug laugh, and throws you across the other side of the room while saps you half a health bar out of nowhere! And before you ask, anyone could be too busy mauling another gremlin to even react.

I purchased OCH a couple weeks ago and i think the rocket hammer you get from completing the mission is great in PvP. Not so sure about PvE though, I don't use it much for fighting monsters. So maybe you should get it if you like doing PvP.

Well, if you're doing it for the reward.

Dark Redemption is amazing! It's the best bomb you can get for killing slimes fast, the second fastest you can get for killing wolvers and fastest one for killing constructs. With RSS gone, it's the highest damaging bomb against single targets, as well.
Just don't pay attention to the flavour text about gremlins, because it's not to be used against gremlins that aren't scorchers or Seerus himself.

Dark redemption bombs are the inferior versions of it.

I keep getting those DRs mixed up. I shall henceforth refer to it as Swirly Shadowy Sciency 'Sploder.

Yeah I'll buy it. I need to train more in Spiral Knights first.
Ive done 38k damage in tier 3 lockdown with that hammer...
Now its up to you.
The questions you have asked has been already answered.
There are a few mercenaries out there who take you through tier 1 to 3 for a decent cost. Though you have a guaranteed win.
Comparing to FSC, The monsters are gremlins so its fairly difficult ... more than FSC. But the boss on the other hand is a piece of... well you know, cheap.
Its waay easier than vanaduke. He goes around putting bombs that do 2 bar dmg or less than half a bar with snarby set. And he dies easy... NOT like vana lol.
I'd say, since 6$ isint much for ya, go fer it.

I need to get 4 Star equipment to unlock Tier 3. If I get the Warmaster Rocket Hammer (5 star Rocket Hammer), does it still count as a 4 star weapon? Or do I need a weapon that's exactly 4 stars?
http://wiki.spiralknights.com/Warmaster_Rocket_Hammer
Edit: Can I even play Tier 3 or do I have to unlock it first in Operation Crimson Hammer?

You need 4* gear or higher in order to get to tier 3, while clearing all previous missions. Although, if you are still at tier 2, I don't really recommend you to get there, they'll eat you alive, unless you happen to find someone willing to carry you.
Still, I find 5-6$ to be a bit too expensive for what it is just a mission. You do get a nice bomb and hammer though. And the chance of crafting a gunner helm. But still...
And probably not, you shouldn't bump threads, unless the last post was done a day or two ago, I believe. But after the thread is done, you either let it die or put it on the graveyard.

Everything is overpriced in this game anyway. I'm surprised this DLC only cost $5-6. Considering it's Spiral Knights, I thought it would cost $10-15.

It's up to you, I personally would only price it up to two or three dollans, and there was a launch promotion that would let you buy it for about 3. And yeah, it kinda is. Still, the devs aren't that greedy compared to some other gaming companies.

Imagine if they charged $6 for every new mission.

But, yeah, Dark Retribution is excellent for any bomber. Murdalizes Royal Jelly, and when overlapped, it can even take on Thwackers if you're good with it. It's a powerful (if dangerous) choice for Polyps and even Gun Puppies, and even tears up slower constructs. And it's even decent for Greavers; the rapid damage doesn't hurt them much, but as long as you keep laying 'em and running through 'em they keep getting interrupted!
The trick is to overlap the rings. If you do that, you can take on faster foes, even Mecha Knights.
If they ever get rid of lousy stupid unwanted crappy Lockdown invincibility frames, it'll be great area denial there too.

I'm still stuck with 2 and 3 star equipment and I really want that 5 star hammer. It's going to be a while but, I'm trying to finish the Missions until I get 4 Star recipes. Even then, it's going to take a ton of time getting materials and crowns plus energy. This is why I hate this game sometimes....

Dark Retribution does joke damage in LD but by lockdown logic it can cancel your attacks if it hits you.. just like t1 gear in t3 can do that also. Great Lockdown logic.

DDR: most epic bomb ever
kill foes with your epic moves
the 2* and 3* versions are Dark Reprisal and Dark Reprisal mk II
and all of them are [crappy] against gremlins
I thought for a second that it would actually be good: Gremlin dodging AI says nope.avi
But yeah, they maul Giant Lichen Colonies, the Giant Jelly who shall not be named for fear of invoking Batabii's wrath, and Polyps. Not to mention they're good for mining purposes.
Also, certain skilled players will loan you their services for the entire t3 version if you pay them a fee. You would need to ask in /2 to find out who those people are, but I have seen knights advertising this for about 100+ CE.

I'm still working my way for 4 Star equipment then I'll buy the DLC. It's such a pain.

"I thought for a second that it would actually be good: Gremlin dodging AI says nope.avi"
Wait, the Dark Reprisal/Retribution balls are actually considered projectiles?
Don't hesitate to hit me up to join you for some tier 3. Been trying to get a hold of that perfect mask for a bit now. That and a pularis are my big questing for items as of now.

I was under this impression as well, but turns out you can actually mutilate gremlins with these things if you just use them right.
-For menders, the best strategy is to run ahead of them and herd them back into the bomb's killzone while always laying new ones. When they raise their shields, overlap bombs so that the shield gets broken in half a second, often killing the gremlin as soon as the shield goes down.
-For thwackers, you have to kind of get a feel for it. Bait an attack while inside the bomb's radius and dodge it. Very often, the thwacker will now be exactly in killzone, turned against you and therefore exposed. This works less well in danger rooms where they have copious amounts of health.
-Scorchers are slow, big and often immobile. Ideal targets for DR!
-Mortafires are just jerks. Bring Callahan, a sword, or Shivermist.
-I haven't tried the bomb against stalkers as I haven't had any need to waste mist on OCH for a long time.
Generally, though, DBB is better against them as long as its able to knock them over. (Which isn't always.)

I go through OCH every so often, if you need help, all i need is 50 ce and i can run with ya to seerus. I like going hammer v. hammer with him.
Really think they should've kept the seerus hammer charge a bit more than the one they made but oh well.

Do I have to complete Tier 1 to unlock Tier 2? Then complete Tier 2 to get 3? Or all of them unlocked already and I can choose anyone I want?

All versions of Operation Crimson Hammer are unlocked once you buy it. You can do them in any order.

1) No, only users who have purchased the expansion may play.
2) Depends on what tier. Tier 1 are little gremlins, Tier 2 are bid gremlins and Tier 3 has bigger gremlins with shields
1. No
2. dunno
3. Yes
