So ecstatic that i got to contribute something =3
im pretty sure my fiend was a hassle for you to make. :) just like the real thing
questions: how can i make it easier for you?

EDIT 10/23/2012: more hard work for you.
made a simple Trojan pixel. not that big thou :) but i didnt put 2 pixel border and im still using another program.

I need to get something

I need to get something straight: that pixel border thing is a over world walkabout thing, meaning when you are out of battle. When in battle, all the space is available for use. Trojans are also a special case, with the over world possibly being 2 or more tiles in size. Trojans might not be showed in the over world at all, as a matter of fact. Also...that is rather pixel-y. :\

As for making it easier for getting it in OHRRPGCE, configuring your graphics editor for better palate matching so the colors don't get mangled on importing, or better yet: just use OHRRPGCE itself, export your work, and send us that. I'm still having a little trouble with Dropbox, but once I can finally set that up, it will be possible for people (with my permission) to directly edit the game. If some of you are worried about this, it shouldn't be a problem due to a certain backup system we have over here. I should have about a month of snapshots for this computer, and keeping CB on it will make it get backed up, also.

On a side note, I'm about halfway on making the design for a certain...antagonist... ;)

EDIT: *Imitating Wheatly* actually I just finished. Yeah, just finished. It's bloody late here, so I'll just show you tomorrow...if you are all still here. (I dunno why I'd want to imitate Wheatly...that shows how late it is!)

I would like to say...

...that Cradle Bound is NOT dead. The only reason I haven't worked on it, nor posted here in a while, is because my guild is currently going through a resurrection. Being how dead it is, I need to work to get it living again. And no, I'm not going to go find another guild. Before I go on a massive recruiting spree, I need to make sure that we have a honorable, working system to rely on to keep us from crashing like we did. Please hold on! I'm going through a lot of designing right now.

I did Sprite!

I made two (2) Red Rover sprites. One for neutral, another with its flamethrower out. Ignore the lack of flickering fire since I have no idea how to flame properly. Also ignore the bad quality when you open the images in a new tab, just copy them onto your desktop and they will look much better.

Check 'em out!

Wow, that's cool!

The only issue is that it's the image size of a small enemy, though it's smaller then that. Keep in mind that the hero graphics is 32x40, although we won't be using all of that, most likely. (We have to have room for when, say, they slash.) Because of that, I think it's safe to say that the knights will be somewhere around 28x30 to 30x36 is size, so keeping ratios is important. Those sprites could fit for the overworld, though. (With some resizing)

For those of you who have clicked here and are either guild masters or officers, I would like some tips on guild hosting, if you don't mind. I want to be prepared for the GH update, and I need to have a guild to represent CB.

Just checked the images

and it turns out you're right. There's 6 pxls of headroom in the first pic and 4 in the second one. I suppose I could find a way to raise the body height by pixels so that there are 2 pxls of headroom in the first and none in the second one. That work for you? The bodies might be slightly... rotund, but the space would be taken advantage of. Or should I just wait for someone (you) to finalise the designs of the heroes so that I can find out what I have to work with here?

@Ghret

As a matter of fact, I'm making a simple battle sprite for this guy, just to help out with proportions. Whatever the case, I think atleast the design should work because he'll be the first person you move, and who heard of a guy walking out of his escape pod with something other then Protogear? :P

I'm happy you want to help, but I'm afraid some spriting work will go to waste if we get busy working before we have any key measurements. It's just like making some clothes: you need to size of the person you are making the outfit for. If you try working ahead of time, the waist may be to small or the legs might be too long.

I'll try to get that sprite done soon, though. The key is something that allows for room for monsters who are bigger then knights to have space to grow while the smaller monsters can have room for detail. If you are planning on helping for a while, I seriously recommend getting the engine itself so that you can make an image directly in the engine, export the image, and put it up here. One of the main reasons for this is because the palate limitations are easy to miss when your using a external editor.

Gran Faaaust.........must..must touch! *Gets cursed* Eeek! Curses! (It's pretty good! I'll probably add an eye to it sooner or later, being that the eye on the GF is one of its distinguishing features.)

Also, being that I'm making knights now, does that mean it's finally a SK game?

And about that crafting screen, I do plan on including it. One thing to note is that some mats may be buyable while others are just drops. (Gel Drops are common while Trojan Horseshoes are a rarity.) Some mats will also have uses other then crafting, such as healing gel cores.

That was fast...

I just finished it! It needs refinements, I know, but I think it's a start.

I'm not good at making sprites, so if anyone wants to pitch in, it would be appreciated. (Now that I look at it here, it looks small. Like, REALLY SMALL! @.@) Keep in mind that, as of now, there are 15 colors in the image, and that green is the transparent color used in the palate. (Anything that color of green is transparent.) This means that only one new color can be added, and the rest can be changed, but it has to stay at 16 or under.

EDIT: you can't change the size. Forgot to mention. :P

EDIT2: The SS recolor parameters are:

All PCs: orange
All Helm: prp
Primary armor color: hvy(hev?)
Secondary armor color: red
Joint armor color: vol

I need to get good doing this because SS is a very handy tool for making sprites from. I should say that the hero sprites don't get weapons on them. There is a separate section for that, allowing for dynamic weapon graphics on heroes, but I haven't looked into it yet and I think that getting a hero graphics setup should be the main priority. In that case, that GF up there might make a good first candidate. :P (Though it might be at the wrong angle.)

whoa thats a good knight

Nice work.

About the GF, when you said that it wasnt going to be held I thought of something. You could turn that weapon sideways and adjust the string at the handle and make it fly towards the enemy. For a charge attack (or in an RPG case, special move), take the purple energy beams, make them bigger, do some pixel editing so it looks good, and then make that fly towards the enemy.

Hope you like my idea!

Now that's an idea...

I was already planning on having character-specific moves, but giving weapon specific moves would be cool, too. Of course, not all weapons would have special abilities. Brandishes would deal statuses, but nothing else special. That leaves us with:

  • PSI Skills:
    • Use energy
    • Have cast times (take a time to cast. If stunned before this period is done, the skill is canceled or delayed. (Depends on what we can do))
    • Are learned with level (No, I can't include heat-per-equip because that would get over complected in an engine that doesn't support it. Besides, we have a plot excuse, err, reason for the heat going to the heroes.)
    • Can be disabled by muddle
  • Class Skills:
    • Classless heroes don't have any of these
    • Upon choosing a class, the appropriate skill it given
    • May be amplified using certain equips
    • May consume any stat, from HP to energy
  • Weapon Abilities:
    • Abilities given by equipping certain weapons
    • Varies from weapon to weapon
  • Hero Passives:
    • A ability constantly in effect as long as the hero is alive and not muddled

Note that muddle (and doom) where named by a bug in the defenses for a certain armor at one time. Some example skills might be:

PSI Skill: PSI Fire: Hits all adjacent enemies. Deals elemental damage and can cause fire.
Class Skill: (For the non-striker class I mentioned) Counter: After using, has a chance to negate a single hit and retaliate with half the damage.
Weapon Ability: (For magnus line) Head shot: Starts the user into a windup phase. If hit during this period, it is canceled. When the phase ends, a no-miss, high damage, stunning shot is unleashed.
Hero Passive: (For the Dark-Aura "Hero", who wields a scythe) Behead: Has a chance to instantly kill on regular attacks. Does not work on doom resistant targets as well as targets with above 60% HP. The chance rises as the target's HP lowers.

Keep in mind that I recently made all this up, so it's not final.

Dreathuxy, I like you. You are a nice source of inspiration. :P

Okay, I threw something

Okay, I threw something together. 20x20 is a WEIRD size, btw; main reason I offered was to try it out, honestly. Generally you'll see 8x8, 16x16 or 32x32 tiles (with character sprites probably being a few pixels taller and wider so as not to get lost onscreen).

I decided to just use Dawnbreaker's 16c palette. It's not really the best-suited for this but it's pretty decent. Made these mockups; the knight is 21px x 12px. It's at 200% zoom, and it was all I could do to convey shape with a LOT of simplification and selouting. With bigger sizes of sprite you can get much more detail. Here's an example by El-Sato that shows it.

Anyways, like someone said earlier; if you can come up with a solid design doc I'd happily sprite for you. I'm more experienced with backgrounds than character spriting, but I'm okay-ish at either.

I'm back!

I've been busy with two Bdays, back to back, as well as a visit from a relative, and let's not forget, Thanksgiving! I haven't touched anything related to CB for a while. I'm back though!

Actually, no, I've been learning FreeBasic. I want to modify OHRRPGCE a tad to fit out needs better. There are some reasons for this:

  • In battle, there are no winning animations! It currently cycles through the attacking animations over and over. It looks...bad...to say the least... :P
  • Also in battle, there is only a single moving sprite. When the character moves, they go from right to left, and then on the way back, left to right. On the way back, the sprite is flipped. (If this sounds limiting, there's ways to be creative. I was thinking of a type of leaping for one of the heroes.) This is normally fine, but what about heroes who aren't symmetrical? If you have a single bionic arm, and then mirror it, the arms switch places!
  • Outside of battle, there are only 2 moving sprites per direction. This is fine when you have a legless thing, such as Slimes and Kats, but humanoid beings look pretty bad. At the very least, having it flip would work, but like above, you can't flip all sprites and expect them to look perfect.

Of course we'll have some problems with it! How would it be a challenge, otherwise. Actually, optimally, I would be writing the whole engine from scratch, but that would take a long time. Using another engine? Well, sure if you can get it to work on Linux and mac without using a special emulator-type program, sure. :P

One of the two great things about OHRRPGCE is that it's open source. (If it wasn't, I couldn't change it!) The other is how simple it is, yet it's quite powerful too. This allows average users to contribute while also letting technical users like myself dig into the deeps of it.

I'm going to get to work on a certain character's design doc now. :P

Would someone mind making a 34x34 jelly, or something? For the activity? :P

You know, looking at it closer in more places makes it seem more limited to the point where I think I can't hope to do much of anything that looks fairly nice on it.

(Maybe I will look at Unity....I still want something 2D, but not something limiting to the point of madness. I just need to see the platforms. Although I will still be supporting OHRRPGCE. I may possibly start coding for it.)

EDIT: upon closer inspection, Unity IS on Linux. Heck, why didn't I see it before? :P

EDIT2: Okay....The linux one isn't out yet, but it will be soon. I think nearly everyone here (at this thread) isn't on Linux, so that shouldn't be a problem right now. I'm going to give it an inspection. I'll be back tomorrow!

Sure! ^.^

Oh, wait, you want to be a polyp or a rock jelly dude? :P

@Dreathuxy

That's how I felt. >.>

I do know of some things I want to keep from Earthbound:

  • Semi-random battles (enemies spawn randomly in the over world, and then you enter a battle when you touch them, either if you intentionally do so or if they run at you.)
  • Possible ambushes (if the enemy comes up behind you, they attack first, and the situation is reversed if you sneak behind them.)
  • Rolling HP (when your HP changes, instead of going straight to x, it changes overtime. This means if you go from 100 to 0 HP in a single blow, you can heal yourself if you are fast before the counter hits 0. If this goes for monsters, I'm not sure.)
  • Multiple battle songs (unlike FF, each enemy hopefully can have a song. Of course, some songs would be reused, but then that makes you feel better if there is one song you hate. :P)
  • Item-only running (in EB, you have to use a skip sandwich to run. Here, the possibilities could be quicksilver cores or striker boosters. The reason why you can't run whenever you feel like it is because it's more vital to run here then it is in other RPGs due to the battle encounter system.)
  • PSI/PK skills (there are lots more from the games that you don't see in SSBB. ;)
  • Stats (there aren't many stats in SK compared to the original EB games, so even if they are named differently, the stats themselves could do the same things.)

Oh, and I'm having trouble with Unity. It refuses to run on wine. >.<

However...there is Blender. Okay, there are plenty of roads now. I may have missed something.

  • Make the engine my/ourselves.
  • Use Blender
  • Use Unity
  • Use SisterEngine v0.6 (May require the commercial version, but idk.)
  • Use OHRRPGCE (Unlikely unless they can make improvements before next year.)
