The expansion isn't an really a expansion. Let me tell you what an expansion would be.

Operation Crimson Hammer is more so a optional dlc not an expansion pack, no disrespect. It is optional enough that a player can typically progress in the game to the end without ever knowing Operation Crimson Hammer existed from a game play perspective.

A expansion worth buying is one that "expands" or moves the game forward. Here is a short list of features I would expect.

- A new tier of levels.
- New 6 or even 7 star alchemy paths.
- New items.
- New monsters.
- A new path for the shadow lair based on the new tiers.
- At least one new game play mechanic that adds more depth to combat. This could be anything from adding a new element to adding a new type of weapon.

Now I do not really know anything about the development limitations of this game so I can't really say how reasonable or realistic my suggestion will be from a developer perspective but in the least it is what I think would be a real expansion for this game.

A new set of levels that

A new set of levels that offers new weapons seems like an expansion to me, whether you have to pay or not. 6 and 7 star items are a terrible idea, first of all, they are awkward numbers, and, in my opinion, a new type of weapon like master weapons should come with the core update. (they require a great deal of wealth and hard work). Also, they have to set up their DLCs wisely to not make FtP players seem too inferior, if some of these were aspects of a DLC, players who are not committed enough to pay will be by far outmatched gear wise, and entertainment wise. This game is mostly free to play, and I don't want it to turn into a normal MMO where you have to spend tons of money to be good or play the other half of the game.

Though you are right about the term

The expansion gives a new mission scaled to each of the three tiers, three different items (a sword, bomb, and helmet; one of each for every tier), a special boss and a couple special enemies (Mortafires, Seerus, Ghostmanes). Having >5*+ equipment exclusively available through premium would be discriminatory to non-premium players, which is bad. Giving advantages outside of the content itself for paying means pay to win, which is bad. Creating exclusive battle mechanics for paying players is also discriminatory, which is bad.

Would it be fair to have even more exclusive items for premium players when the majority (non-premium) already complain about their disadvantages (premium players can afford all the UVs and equipment they want/can afford)?

As I already explained in another thread which was clearly biased by its creator, this game has pay to play, not pay to win. Pay to play means having the alternative to pay out of your wallet to get further faster for the same content as everyone else while pay to win excludes non-premium players from being able to enjoy it. In spite of what some people may sputter, Spiral Knights is far more welcoming and playable to non-premium players in every way excluding the Seerus masks which are very useful for gunners.

You are asking to kick non-premium players in the crotch and urinate on them.

Well..

I sort of assumed the free to play game model was a bit of a brick wall, but I really didn't want to bring it up because I really don't know what is happening behind the curtains. I suppose the gaming model may not support true expansions which in my opinion would be a problem for the long term life span of the game.

The only way it might work is if a "true expansion" was free to play as well...

In case you haven't seen this

In case you haven't seen this yet, a guild hall upgrade that is free to play and "another special building" is a sufficient expansion for now, as was the release of new boss stratums, the mission system, and technically, the shard bomb update. (people don't have to like them, still, 6 lines of derps)

No new tiers. The game has developed too far for that. New weapons and stuff would be nice. I'm rather unclear as to what you're suggesting; it seems you're just generally calling for more content.

I agree. We also need a new expansion. Perhaps one with mounts or classes, or maybe even a new playable race.

Before you rage, look at my links.

And no. All the P2P's are gonna laugh at all the F2P's with their lame 5 star gear, while the P2P's have fancy schmancy 6 or 7 star gear, and have better combat, such as backflips or eye lasers, and the F2P's are crying because all they have is whacking stuff, shooting stuff, or using explosives on stuff.

I remember someone suggested

I remember someone suggested a expansion that you get to play as a gremlin, it was a pretty good idea, wonder why it died out.

To be fair, DLC has at least half of that.

Some games have big expansions.

This game has little expansions.

It's a variation.

Variations are good.
