I've been loving the game so far, but there's one thing that keeps irking me. There are some runs when I will absolutely trounce everything with one hand behind my back and make the game look easy. Then I can turn around, run the exact same dungeon with the exact same weapons and tactics (and full connection bar), and I get absolutely destroyed. It's definitely not a matter of focus; it could be a matter of skill but I'm not sure. There just seem to be certain attacks (the dash-spin from the spiked jelly swarms in RJP and the big smash from lumbers seem particularly problematic, as are spiked floors) that will hit me when I'm clearly well out of range.

Am I just misjudging hitboxes really bad (they are rather strange compared to a lot of games, but I like to think I'm getting a grip on them), or is the hit detection just really wonky at random times?

Here's hoping I just need more practice dodging.

Even if you see full connection bars, there's a chance your modem derped for a second.

I notice this with fiends

I usually fight fiends using the first swing of a piercing sword. On some runs, I swing consistently just before they attack, and interrupt their attacks perfectly, and mow through them without taking any damage. On other runs, I seem to swing consistently just after they attack. So I get interrupted, take huge damage, and do no damage to them. I think it's some delicate issue of game timing, probably related to network latency and the heuristics that the software uses to adjust for latency.

So your story doesn't surprise me. I don't think that you can do anything about it, except for playing more conservatively when you seem to be "having a bad day". (And possibly trying a better computer.) Good luck.

Well, no, my computer's not

Well, no, my computer's not crappy, and I can tell it's not the computer seizing up that causes the problem, anyway: the visuals and controls are buttery smooth, my knight just occasionally lurches and hemorrhages rectangles at the sight of a nearby attack. It seems exactly like lag, except that I have no other visible signs of lag, my connection has yet to drop below 4 bars, and I have an extremely stable connection in all other applications. Certainly not unstable enough to cause several minutes of constant hiccups.

Thanks for the input, Bopp. I guess what I'm really getting at is whether I need to learn to work around it because it's a server issue, or if I should just keep banging my head against a wall because it's a personal reaction error. I don't think it's a gamebreaker either way, this game's way too fun.

some other ideas

Make sure you're not making other heavy use of your Internet connection while playing (downloading huge files, streaming movies, etc.). Set your graphics quality to Low. If you play through the web site, then you have two ways to run the game: By going to the "Play" page and letting the applet load, or by downloading SK as a standalone program at that page. Try them both, to see whether they're different.

That's good to hear. :)
