I've recently been getting an error popup stating that SK "Could not create the Java virtual machine" upon launch from Steam, after which Spiral Knights does not launch.

I've reinstalled SK and ensured that Java is up-to-date. This has only been an issue since the September patches started getting rolled out - I've been able to launch and play SK fine before that.

Reinstall steam or at least update it.

I do not see how that would help. All of my other steam games run absolutely fine, which would indicate that this is not a Steam problem, and Minecraft runs fine, which indicates that this is not a Java problem.

Elaborate please. As I already said, I've updated Java - and Spiral Knights was running fine until the first September update on the version of Java I'd had installed since early this year without needing to tinker with my Java settings.

I find it dubious that my firewall would change itself.

Steam uses its own....

I am pretty sure steam uses its own version of Java to run games, so updating/re installing steam may actually solve your problem. I say its worth a shot.

Deleted everything but

Deleted everything but /steamapps and the Steam .exe, let Steam rebuild itself from that. Furthermore, copied over the /java_vm folder from my laptop's iteration of Spiral Knights (which does work), to see if that'd fix it.

No effect at all.

I'm beginning to get rather irritated.

If you have extra.txt in your

If you have extra.txt in your sk folder try removing it. See if sk starts up after that.

Wait....

What do you mean by deleted? You shouldn't have to copy anything because steam supplies its own versions. I am fairly sure if you do an uninstall Steam will ask you if you want to keep your apps. Try to first uninstall SK via Steam. Then uninstall the Steam client. Download the latest version from the site and reinstall. Then lastly, reinstall SK.
