Aentriz sat up. Stars?
No. This was cradle. In a place he REALLY did not have to be. Starlight cradle, he thought. Yes, that was it ,that was where he was. He looked around, amongst the ruins that were embedded into the ground. Yes ,now it all came back to him. The Shrine of Slumber, ''Forbidden zone to all knights, vanguard or not. You walk in there, you're lost, punk!''. Barrus' words echoed in his mind. He lifted himself off the ground, his legs a bit wobbly. Way too wobbly. What was wrong? Sure, his armor was mercurial, but tha- No. Not any more. Now it was a shade of light blue, and the jolts that ran throught his charged suit were gone. In its place was a blue mist.
-''Brute?'' He asked himself. it sure seemed like brute jelly gear.
- No. Better.
That was a waker. Aentriz stared all around him, searching for the source of that voice. All he could see were his destroyed weapons and shield lying about.
Then his right arm moved on its own.
Aentriz felt a cold run down his spine as his limb turned in angles that would have made him faint with pain, if he could feel it. Or if it had bones.
it seemed to wriggle like a snake for a while, then stopped. and he heard the voice again
- Not perfect.. But much less solid than the time when it was yours...
''Who's there? Wh-Who said that?''. The knight propped himslef precariously against a low wall and waited for an answer.
''Do you not remember?'' .
''NO,WHO ARE YOU?!''
"There is a way you can understand better'' The voice seemed expectant ''A different path'' .
''What?''
''A path less used than memory. The path that winds through your unconscious, criss-crossing your mind and all it has seen while you slumber. Let me take control, and, for the meantime, Dream'' .
"excu-''.
Aentriz fell asleep in a way he never had before. He felt himself rising, rising from layers and layers of darkness. Into the light ahead.
My first try at a fanfic, lol. im short on time, probably gonna make some more later
Chapter 2! yay!
It was a sunny day in haven. Then again, it always was, the thought, slightly intrigued. Aentriz was sat in the garden near havens barricaded front entrance, left alone with his thoughts. This something he felt he really needed to do, and would only be able to if he kept himslef from the loud murmur of the smaller garden, or the area near the auction house. The arcade wouldnt be of much use either. The new missions system had left it mostly desolate except for Feron, Sullivan and few others, but it was a creepy place now.
words from the briefing he had heard a few days ago, together with Raanxar's harsh words, came to him unexpectedly. He had been chosen for a particularly dangerous mission that day, and she had freaked out. Worse still, Draiv, his brutish work colleague, had been sneering at him all day long.
pieces of his briefing came back to him like the wind that flew by....
''Greetings, Barrus. You called?'' he was puffing loudly after running all the way up to Barrus' meeting room using the stairs. The elevator broke down, it seemed, yet again.
''You're late, Aentriz'' came the grumpy reply. Aentriz shrugged. Luckily for him, he had enough credit for that. Had he been somebeody else, he'd have his half his head punched into the wall.
''The elevator broke down, and this is the fifteenth floor. It is'nt very surprising that it took me a while to get here.''
Barrus' only response was to look at Aentriz's waist, as if he was out of shape. He then frowned, since the mercurial mail the Danger Scout wore hid most of his body's natural lines. Either way, both of them knew that, if you were a Danger scout, you HAD to be fit. It was that, or you'd be dead on your first assignment.
''So, what's up?''
''A new mission, that's what'' said the knight. We've, uhm, discovered a... new area, lets call it that, and we decided that you were the most expendable guy around to throw into it''. Aentriz didn't even blink. His superior, and leader of the danger scouts, always had a harsh way of talking about his soldiers. ''You want gentle treatment? Go join Desna!'' was his response when anybody dared to question his ways. However, he was one of the most
worried when it came to supplies and gear for his troops. Legend had it that he had even been caught stealing a crate of leviathan blades when the shipment had been denied to him and sent to a few wardens at Subtowns across the clockworks from the deposit where it had been left for transportation the next day, and then bribed (or knocked out, the story wasn't clear at this point.) the guards who caught him.
Barrus let out a heavy sigh. ''That hard, huh?'' remarked Aentriz. ''Yeah''. Barrus' eyes seemed focused on the floor. Aentriz could not recall ever seeing his superior so worried. ''Where?'' Barrus' crimson eyes looked directly into his. ''Damn, you seem almost eager to die!'' Then he cracked a smile. ''Guess i've been trained well.'' Replied Aentriz.
''Enough kidding around. The place we want you to explore... the area is actually known to us.'' At this point, he began to look around, checking if the room was safe. ''Its called... The Shrine of Slumber, and it's the hardest mission we've had in decades around this area. Same old thing: you find a minimally secure path through the place, trying not to disturb any of the natural life.'' Aentriz frowned. Not disturb? He was used to ''Dont kill unless it looks at you''. what was this mysterious place, after all?
''Listen, Barrus, if this place has a backstory, i wanna hear ALL about it. No lies. I've got to know what i'm facing here.''
''Right. Here goes.'' Barrus pressed a button, and a video screen showed up.
Aentriz shuddered. What he had seen in that video still haunted him, and sitting there amongst the grass and a few snipes, he felt vulnerable, even in the place where the Isorans were stronger on cradle. But it had to be done. He lifted himself and started walking towards the Bazaar.
The video was made with very poor quality tape, and the audio was terrible as well. He turned to Barrus for an explanation, but all the knight did was gesture towards the screen.
-Pay attention. This is important.
The video was of a starlight cradle level. False stars with a light blue hue and a giant lightbuld circling about, as well as a moon. A team of knights sat about, all of them with huge dents in their armor and looking tired. They spoke in quiet voices, murmuring something about the glory of the shrine. Sitting there, in a terrible, desperate condition, all they codid was stare into the camera and talk of how the slumber would hold its place. Of how wrong were the ones that entered the gates. of how hopeless was any chance of survival inside the shrine. Of how the mission would be completed.
And suddenly, a gruesome sound of flesh being pierced filled the air. One of the knights fell forward, a row of barbs going down his spine. As his blood spattered into the faces of his partners,he shrieked out warning to the perpetrators. That the one sleeping should never have been woken. That his punishment was too simple. As if on call, an enourmous spike ran through his knee and, since he was bent over, pierced his neck, and he fell face down, meanwhilenever hesitating in his speech. One of his partners, missing an arm and now with a spike embedded into her skull, cried out, with tears in her eyes, that the gift was coming. that eternal sleep would bring them peace, and of how happy she was to recieve it. She collapsed, and behind her, a knight holding huge curved spikes stood proud. He ran past his other comrades, slashing and hacking, untill they were all dead. Then he looked at the camera, his maddened eyes shining with a light blue shade. His words were: ''Beware the guardian. Beware the keeper of the realm of containment. The architect will not do him wrong again. The time of sleep is over.'' Then came the static
Shuddering , Aentriz turned to Barrus once more.
-You're our best knight. They were undergeared. I mean, cmon, what could...
- Don't try to convince me. I'll go. But give me all you got on that place.
