Well I'm working on a SK based animation. I actually started just modeling a volcanic armor, but I decided to turn it into an animation after I picked this up again some weeks/months ago.
Current estimated finishing time of this is sometime in 2013.

Progress so far is, there's no animation done! I'm still working on the models to animate later.
Many of the materials are sort of done, I decided on a sort of minimalist shadeless rendering so I can save a lot of time both in work and rendering.

The only problem than I can foresee is the proportions.

I think the model you are using is too... "human". If that's what you want to use, it's fine by me. All I'm saying is that if the model was a bit more... "chibi", then I think the end result would look more like a Knight, as opposed to the human wearing Spiral armour that it looks set to be.
I think looking at this series of a Spiral Knight wood sculpture would give the "correct" proportions of a Spiral Knight.
If that sounds too much work for a change you consider too minuscule to be effective, then don't do it. You're the one making this damn thing, not me.

Yay replies

@Xalthalosx
Thanks! Also here is a version someone requested of how the CIV could look if it was hot instead of cold. http://bneutral.deviantart.com/art/Hot-Iron-Vanquisher-329567271
Making it helped me realize that magma cracks make anything look 20% cooler.
As for skills, it's all practice. If you have determination you can become good at it.

@Ghret
I'm aware of the proportions! Thanks a lot for taking the time to point it out, but there is a clear theme issue of why I'm opting for more humanoid than chibi sizes. (And it's hard to convert some things actually, I'm taking some artistic licenses on the armor)
As an example, imagine someone making a serious drama where all characters look cute, or a lighthearted comedy where all characters are grim and scary looking, it's odd. Not to say it's "bad" but I prefer style to complement narration. Also there are other issues, for example SK's style takes the camera angle into account, so most legwear has little detail while helmets are really detailed. The dreaded peg legs!
