Should OOO fall in line with valve when it comes to economic and artistic principles?

Valve's economic experiment with Team Fortress 2 could be considered a massive success, and as we have seen, OOO often takes much from that, starting first with the crate drop system and second with the idea of rapid fire promotions... and now, we have even more obvious evidence of this with the newest promotion regarding "buy a different game; get a promotion in spiral knights"; see- http://i48.tinypic.com/kasrh2.png

One might see this as a bad thing, that OOO is essentially stealing valve's ideology and attempting to 'ride the coat tails' to success, although we must remind ourselves that valve is opening new gateways, and setting new norms in an industry- they knew what they were getting into, and they chose to let companies like OOO into it due to their intuitive policies; they aren't trying to monopolize, they're trying to invent, to bring about change to the industry, for better or for worse.

And why is it worse? Because of it's negative effect on the artistic style of the game. Valve's attempts to integrate have been proven this; one cannot say that a lime green "magistrate's mullet" fits into the original artistic style of the game. When you force a new artistic perspective onto a game, it becomes even harder to justify. That being said, it is still possible to do so- take for example their newest paint sets- which are team coloured using hues already found in the game. An even better example would be the space aged series of weapons- their first attempts were seen as shoddy, but their more recent ones were created to both the theme of the game and to the theme of the space aged universe they were intended for.

I believe that if Spiral Knights is to follow suit with such promotions, they should learn from this. If pulled off correctly, there will be room for this system to flourish, if not, then OOO will have tarnished the precedent established by valve. They (the art team) certainly seem to be trying to uphold this notion, as is evidenced in their latest work, which I can heartily approve of. Even so, I am somewhat scared of the idea that they might falter on this principle, as we have seen in the hunter update. Though again, the 'surge update' was far nicer, so it might also be said that they have corrected themselves to some degree.(new!) Another example of 'OOO gone right' is in the rarity of the crate drops. In TF2, crates are almost unlimited in number. They're everywhere, and they're worth nothing- in Spiral Knights, you can get a good 2-5K from your crate. Of course, the major defect here is that in order to receive crates in Spiral Knights you must be opening them, or at least thats how it seems to me. The last time I got a crate was 2ish days after the update came out. It might be that I'm just not noticing when I get crates, but even then- I've seen people receive huge numbers of crates after opening them. Kind of a good thing, but kind of a scary+greedy thing.

So what do you think? Should OOO fall in line with valve? Do you have some variation of the number sixty nine in your crowns <69? Is it right for OOO to do this? And more importantly, do you think that OOO will succeed?

i like how its not ouuta place.

the stuff, this promo, sonic and steam knight doesn't ridicule the games art style. unlike TF2 but there just goofy like that.
i say good for them really. there really gonna need more gamers.
so as long as the art team is working hard, it will succeed.
sadly, its only steam exclusive.

It's a good idea.

They come unbound, so meh, no one's forced to spend $.

And hey, affordable costumes for once. Win!

gaben is boss

I dont think this will ruin SK, spiral knights players are very creative so I think they will do some fancy smexy costumes out of promos like this.

I don't think these promos

I don't think these promos ruin SK's artstyle. They are actually pretty fitting IMO. Also, lime hats aren't promotion faults. It's just they decided to add the most vomit inducing color in the game for some reason.

Except Valve actually comes up with solid content to back up the constant cosmetics while Spiral Knights is waiting on many promises made by Three Rings yet to be complete for a while. I definitely do not expect Iron Slug to be rebalanced, stun fixed, and the guild hall update tomorrow, but almost all of our updates only matter to people with open wallets while everyone else sits in mud splashing around while it dries up and cakes their legs in.

For example, TF2 may have many silly items, but TF2 is intentionally cartoony. What if Tom and Jerry decided to be friends and talk? The difference is Spiral Knights exists in its own world; not that TF2 is just derping around, but their world is more open ended while ours is more specific to a theme. As often has a new hat comes out in TF2, usually at least a couple new weapons come out around the same time; sometimes several weapons. Then Mann versus Machine came and everyone soiled themselves. What about us? After all the hats but none of the new weapons, where is our Mann versus Machine? They promised us some kind of new combat mechanic, though it had no details, but it was promised. If Three Rings wants to be a cheap imitation they still have to do the hard work before playing in the closet.

One word: Hats

The reason Spiral Knights isn't going to go crazy over these cross-game promotionals is because unlike Team Fortress, the economy isnt based entirely off of trading hats. We still have energy and crowns (lolcrowns) for merchanting, so we won't see new ones flying by with such ferocity.

Also, to respond to the original post; if you're seeing a Spiral promotional with Steam, it doesn't mean they stole it; it means the companies are partnering together for mutual gain. Perhaps this will give the incentive for update prodding.

I think I'll add to the OP a bit...

@Luigi

Our big update is [hopefully] going to be guild hall updates and has been the wonderful danger missions that have came out recently... though you very much know this. Even if it isn't precisely what many of us like to happen, the new missions have introduced a fairly decent new mechanic, just as danger missions did. Of course, my one qualm with danger missions is that they aren't a part of the clockworks; I'd much rather have them integrated their than as a daily mission.

@Malakii

While they aren't stealing stuff, they certainly are being influenced by valve- and as I said, there is nothing wrong with that.

If people get free stuff who

If people get free stuff who have never heard of SK or played it before - there is a pretty decent chance that being free to play, they'll at least download and try it out.

This should net some new players for SK so that's a win for our community.

If Steam wants to sell me a game for $1 and I get something that could have been bundled in a $9.95 purchase in SK - that is also no terrible thing.
I get something to use in a game I play and I get to try another game that I may enjoy.
If I hate it after an hour, I can just delete it from my HD and never look back.

Considering the non-stop slew of "boxes" lately - this is at least a different approach.

(plus all of those helmets are pretty sweet!)

Here's hoping the other SK items are featured in a similarly priced, game of the day feature.

Minecraftstyle.

This is most likely one of the reasons why the Minecraft dev, Notch, decided not to get into Steam. Though he did consider it, and he did consult with them, but Notch found that they're just walking a very different path from his. Personally, I can't really imagine Minecraft going that way either. Seeing as it's art style is very specific, and the players always have been able to freely choose how they want to look through "skinning". (Ugh, I don't even dare to imagine what obscene skins we'd see if people were to do that in Spi Kni. Hahaha.)

Hopefully, they'll be able to rake in fresh players from somewhere though.

I, uh, really don't get that reasoning. Minecraft, or any game on Steam, isn't forced to integrate Steamworks or really do any collaboration with Valve beyond them host your game and taking a cut. Notch doesn't want his game on there because he wants to portray Minecraft as a sort of monolith of indie gaming and self-publishing. Also Mojang wants 100% of the over $300k they make daily, so there's that.

GABEN HAVE MERCY

Hats are gonna take over the world.

They already took over TF2, and they want to take Spiral Knights now.

Speaking of minecraft, I'm building a concert, so if you're feeling particularly outgoing and want to send me pictures of yourself wearing clothes that you would dance in I might build you. The scaling is a bit small, but thats just because of size. If you want in, just mail me in game and we can talk. So far- http://i.imgur.com/pvk6h.jpg

@Jacobey
...which is another good point. To what extent do we expect this to work? If the games that SK gets "featured" on have a population of some huge number, then SK will likely get a fraction of that huge number in players. And is SK sticky enough yet? Or will everyone quit once they see the energy system?

Glittertind
Oh crepes.

Aaah, okay. Then disregard my post. Haha.
