The theme in Spiral knights is mostly cooperative which I like, but I think it would be kind of cool if some form of competition was added to dungeons.
I don't mean anything in the way of PvP, but something like after each floor the players damage dealt would be tallied, and the higher ranks get a little extra crowns or heat maybe. I was also thinking of a random chance floor (like graveyard, vault or arenas) that put players indirectly against each other to reach a goal first for big rewards.
I realize both ideas might be difficult to implement currently, (especially bonus floor :P) but some friendly competition would be fun I think. Any feedback?
Competitive element to dungeons
Well there would have to be some reward for the obstacle course (as I'm assuming there are little to no monsters and thus no heat, crowns or mats). Perhaps there would be checkpoints and when you reached one you receive X crowns? But a great suggestion nonetheless.
I also like the broken elevator idea. But how would this work when soloing? Something to think about.
What could be cool is if, on certain levels, each member of a party would spawn in separate rooms, each with their own hallway systems and rooms, but on the same levels. They each would be filled with monsters covering a wide range of resistances and weaknesses, and there would be several rooms with varying amounts of treasure chests at the end. Each member would have to complete their own path. The twist:
At the end of each separate path, there would be a button or a switch, and when flipped it would affect what treasure rooms the other players could get. Example:
Players 1-4 each spawn. When they each flip a switch at the beginning, gates drop and they fight their way through monsters. Player 1 reaches the end first, and gets the largest Treasure Room, which he opens by flipping a switch. That switch then locks the other players' largest Treasure Room. Player 2 finishes second, and he also flips a switch, subsequently locking the second largest Treasure Room to the remaining two. This repeats for the last two. Additionally, each Treasure Room would have a path leading to a large, communal room where the party would gather, containing a Party Button that would lower a gate to the Elevator.
...what about challenges? Either the plain ol' "waves of creatures" model, or more interesting objectives like "keep the slowly-opening gate closed by hitting a switch while fighting" thing.
If it was just one person, then it would be a one man obstacle course. Not much of a problem.
Ever played 2-player Tetris? And wanted to cry when your friend dumps a few rows right on your head? What if there was a competetive arena like that. 2v2, but instead of players battling eachother, they try to clear the arena rooms as fast as possible... before their opponents trigger extra spawns on their side.
Nice idea. Most deaths, most revives/most heat gained, most damage dealt, most damage taken would be cool to have listed at the end of each floor
I'd like an Obstacle Course type level. If you die, you go to the end and when everyone else finishes/dies you're resurrected to continue on.
Perhaps when you go down the elevator it was "Broken" so your team is split up, and you must traverse the remnants of an experimental depth considered too dangerous, even for Gremlins so they scrapped it - Now a death trap for wandering knights.
