4 players on each team face off in what could be the most deadly pastime since shallow water cliff diving, A large ball (lichen) is fought over in an attempt to push it through the opposite team's goal. The ball will occasionally break apart when it's smashed too many times by the same team in a row. And the new smaller balls can be pushed through the goal line for small amounts of points. Each teams goal is protected by a goalie, who can operate inside the penalty box, but he's the only player allowed in the goal box. The other three players on each team can cover the whole oval sized arena.

Two modes of play, "Fair Fight" and "No Rules"
In Fair Fight players can knock back but not damage other players with their attacks, there are however significantly more danger features in the Fair arena.

No Rules players knock back and damage other players but at reduced damage compared to open PvP (It's still a game about putting the ball through the goal) The small balls will now interact with the elemental traps as well, making the prospect of destroying the ball (running out the shot clock) even more dangerous. (oilers, etc)

Updates (bump)

After talking over the hypotheticals extensively with a friend, we came to the conclusion it would be simpler to make the rules a little closer to Hockey on constant power play. No goalies, but a pentalty box around each goal box, and that Fair Play and Foul Play where two great modes to play the game in. It would play a lot like collecting lichen spawn with opposing teams. Pushing the Slime balls over the line would be the only scoring factor in both games, but in Foul Play the dangerous slime ball can cause your team to lose points if you die from it.

One thing to consider is

One thing to consider is balance for "Foul Play" mode. In Bloodbowl, the way the rules stack up it becomes far more efficient to kill the opposing team than to try to score goals. The result is a game that should offer an interesting choice between violence and scoring becomes a slaughterfest with some unimportant rules for scoring on the side.

So long as you balance the mechanics that killing off other players doesn't become the dominant strategy, though, you should be good.

I believe you have a point

I believe you have a point there. Even in Foul Play, the ability to kill a player, and knock them out for the remainder of a round (A period that it takes to score 1 Giant Licheon, or 10-20 second respawn) would probably be detriment enough to make roughhousing rewarding in a game. involving it in the scoring proses in any way could distract from the primary purpose of the game; to collect and push slimes through the opposing team's goal.

This idea is fantastic to me, because it is the amalgamation of game mechanics for a sport that fits perfectly to this genre, slow swords, fast swords, guns, bombs, they all have a purpose in team mechanics.

(The entire time this was being brainstormed we constantly had to ignore the nagging voice that kept suggesting having a pair of large rock slimes that could damage both teams, a variety of other sized slimes, and Gold Buterflies that move at Mach 2 that absolutely have to be gunned down. Because i mean, it's quiditch and it's like right there, how does the possibility escape unnoted?)
