Welcome to the best adventure game on the web. And it’s free! Now, how can you advance in the game in a way that’s both efficient and fun?

First, I strongly recommend that you buy some energy with real money, for example, 3500 crystal energy (ce) for $9.95. Although it’s not necessary, it will help you to accomplish many things at a much faster pace.

The best way to gain wealth is to play, and the best levels to play first are the rank missions for both the knowledge and rewards they provide. After you have completed these, you may choose to replay certain levels such as the Boss missions for fun or the rewards they provide in terms of crowns, heat, materials, and tokens. Or you may decide to delve into the Clockworks for general levels.

There are several ways of gaining wealth while playing. During the course of play, you will acquire materials and crowns. (NOTE * Every crown, mineral and drop of energy is credited to every member in your party equally, so there is no need to compete for these.) You may choose sell some of your materials for crowns in the auction house or to other players directly; however, bear in mind that you will need many of these materials to craft better gear. It is best to use your wealth to buy recipes for 2* gear. After you have gained access to tier 2, begin buying recipes from the Basil vendor at level 13 or in the Hall of Heroes found in the Rank Missions. Patiently craft up your gear to 4* level and gain access to tier 3. Now you will start getting to the Basil vendor at level 23. Buying and reselling boss item recipes from here can be profitable.

Keep in mind that all of these methods for gaining wealth are just other aspects of the game. Wealth should not be your goal, but rather whatever awesome gear or accessories you can buy with your welth. It’s all playing. Be kind and polite to your fellow knights, and please refrain from begging.

If you’d like to see some of the gear with accessories available to you, you can check out this thread.

It is best to use your wealth to buy recipes for 2* gear.

Unless you're going for UVs, it's best to buy 3-star gear, and upgrade from there. This is the cheapest path to 5-star equipment. I can show you the arithmetic if you insist.

magic number: 28,900

Read the "Craft or Buy?" section of my old economic advice. To update it to today's CE prices of 9,000: Making a 3-star item yourself costs 28,900 crowns. (This figure includes recipe and energy, but not materials. This figure assumes that you craft a 2-star item and then upgrade it to 3-star, that you haven't got the recipes for free, and that you value your mist energy. Adjust accordingly.) So, if you're not hunting for UVs but simply want to get to 5-star quickly, then you should buy 3-star items when you can find them for less than 28,900.

the math

5k for the recipes
+
9k for the 100ce, 22.5k if using solely ce, for whatever convoluted reason
+
1.4k in crafting fees
=
15.4k or 28.9k

Knights learn that mist is calculated into crafting quite early, and by 3* I'd hope that they have realized by now that crafting with mist dramatically cuts down crafting cost, especially with CE being so high. It's far cheaper to just craft 3*s, and the fair amount of mist tanks you pick up along the don't hurt either.

I beg to differ...(on the starting post)

Either you start on 3* equipment, or you can work your way up from 2* WITHOUT using your crystal energy at all.

Most vanilla 3* items on the

Most vanilla 3* items on the AH can be had for about 18k. So the 'extra cost' of purchasing 3* is about 2.5k, but if you consider the 150 mist energy you might have used to run Jelly King or even normal Clockworks, crafting definitely puts you in the red compared to buying. Three runs of Tier 1 (let's say you joined at d2 or later) will handily give you about 500cr/level for strata 1, 1000cr/level for strata 2 for a total of 3runs x (2 x 500 + 3 x 1000) = 12,000cr. Which could be nearly double if you get lots of strata 2 arenas, and not even counting valuable materials like monster bones and green shards.

The only reason you'd craft is if you just like learning recipes or are casual and aren't able to play every day (both of which are good reasons, mind you). But if you care about the numerical breakdown, it is much cheaper to buy 3* than it is to craft.

^What Mohandar said.

He and Bopp are right. Duke, your mistake is counting mist as free. It isn't: as Mohandar points out, using it to craft--unless you simply wouldn't have had the time to play anyway--has a huge opportunity cost.

Your other, more minor (but still significant) mistake is counting mats as free. Their value can actually be quite significant (in particular, that of beast scales and monster bones, among others).

It should also be noted that luck or patience on the AH can get you 3*s at 15kcr and under. At that point, buying is the better option however you slice it.
