I'm thinking of doing the shadow lair for snarby. It would be nice for some advice on what shield to bring and tips for the boss.
I was also wondering if a shadow lair is viable for crown income.
thanks guys.

Crest of Almire and Barbarous

Crest of Almire and Barbarous Thorn Shield are the two most common shield choices for that shadow lair
In the boss, all you need to do is treat it like the normal snarby, and take care to kill the silkwing ASAP
SLs are in to way a viable source of income - the cost of the key overtakes any money you may make from it, and you can make the same money from FSC, with less of a challenge

Shadow lair snarby eh?

To start off with, tell me your regular loadout. I don't have info on that I can't advise you on it. So I can give you more accurate measure of what you should bring.

There is a lot of undead around so you may like to grab an elemental sword or gun.

I can tell that you are most probably a swordie so you have an elemental sword already?
For a gun I would advise an elemental alchemer or a pola-. I have forbidden myself from saying that dastardly gun's name. Instead of this you might want a piercing sword for wolvers.
A blitz needle also speeds up the boss fight by a lot but be careful that you don't get attacked by the other snarby.
A Shiver would also help to freeze the hordes of undead there.

I got to go so ill advise you on armour later

UGL

Contrary from what you would expect from a beast themed boss strata piercing defense is actually not particularly useful in UGL. Besides the expected wolvers and virulisks there are a ton of vile howlitzers, hurcats and drouls present. The most challenging part of this SL for most people is the projectile spam caused by the howlitzers and kats. As a result I would suggest bringing a shadow shield. Dread skelly would be ideal since it has max poison resist but CoA will do so long as you are smart and don't try to tank too many hits.

With the same idea in mind shadow armour is more useful than pierce. Radiant silvermail is for once very useful since it combines shadow, piercing and poison resistance along with an undead damage bonus. Ironically snarby armour itself is well suited to this SL with its shadow and poison resist but you probably won't have access to that.

The boss fight itself is pretty simple. It plays out the same as the normal Snarby fight but with an extra Snarbalox, respawning silkwings and the swarm seed. Ring the beast bell and keep poking the snarbys with a flourish until theyre dead. Make sure you keep killing the silkwings since they will very quickly heal the snarby a during their invincible phases. Keeping the swarm seed at a minimum is important too, especially for whoever is ringing the beast bell since the movement reduction is liable to get them bitten and slow down anyone trying to hit the snarby(s) when they're vulnerable.

In terms of profitability most SL will result in a loss. I've heard that factoring in all the CR gained from the levels, tokens, and selling the mats from a UFSC run for four people can be profitable but only just. To minimize costs I suggest bringing four people to split the cost of the key and maximize overall CR gain.

As for crown viability

At the current moment with what ce is trading at, if you can sell the nightmare mane for 25-30k u make no money for the snarb run, assuming you split the cost of the key. As for the other SLs pretty much the same, Ice Queen is a total loss on account that the mat doesn't sell for anything. I mean seriously you cant give the celestial ore away. As for UFSC the price on the mat changes all the time(sometimes i make 30k on it sometimes i make 10k) but the run itself nets 17k crowns. So depending on what u can sell the mat for (and again u split the cost of the key) you can start making money doing UFSC but its minimal. Overall the Shadow Lairs are not for farming, its simply harder content for you to play. I advise doing the RRT or UFSC on account that after the run u can at least break even and essentially just play them for free.

frequently asked questions

Shield: This is a frequently asked question. Please search the forums, for immediate answers to such questions. For example, on the first page of the Arsenal forum there is already a thread about SGWW equipment. Have you also read the wiki page "Shadow Lair", which gives you general equipment advice on all four of them?

Boss tactics: Have you watched videos on YouTube?

Crowns: One fourth of a Shadow Key costs 450 energy, which at 8,000 crowns per 100 CE is 36,000 crowns. You certainly don't make that back in raw earnings. Selling the material may let you make it back; it depends on which Shadow Lair I think. But you might want to use your material yourself. Profitability also depends on how much energy you spend in reviving.

The shield: Barb shield/Ironmight
Boss tips: Kill that silkwing as fast as possible! Have one person on the bell one person on silkwing and 2 prepared to smash the boss.

SL is /is not viable for CR income? Let's do some calculations:
the key costs 1800ce/1700ce+100ME from depot or around 1500 ce from other players.
If you decide to split the cost, assuming you got it for 1500ce from a player, that will be 1500/4=375/player which is 370/100*7700=28875 CR, rounding up that's around 29k CR. (Normally people charge 450CE)
Doing UFSC will give you around 15k CR in total? (including the clockworks levels, actually I forgot the amount, I never look through the final income just cross it xD correct me if I'm wrong)
15kCR=200CE
Maiden's tear=20k=250ce (I see plenty in AH for around 15k)
450 ce total
9 levels and you used all mist with one REV, 100 ME=3500~4000CR=50CE
Leaves you 400 ce.
400-375=25ce, that's around 2k CR
Normal JK gives 3k
FSC is 7k~8.4k

Therefore SL isn't viable for CR income once you encounter the effort and time taken (As SL in generally harder than normal missions)
Most people do SL for fun, for experience or to refine their skills in PvE not for CR. (Unless you have some generous friends that invite you to a free run).
