Hello! I would like some advice on how to successfully shoot devilites, gremlins, and wolvers. I am an aspiring gunslinger, so I need tips on hitting these enemies BADLY. Thanks for any attempts at giving advice!
Shooting dodgy enemies
This is exactly Callahan's niche. The bullets are very fast, and disrupt those enemies well. Because Callahan is piercing damage, it does extra damage to fiends and beasts, and adequate damage to gremlins.
Before the wolver AI was nerfed (about a year ago?), Blitz Needle was pretty risky to use against wolvers. But now a lot of people just use Blitz instead of Callahan, I think. The idea isn't so much that you aim at the wolver (or fiend) and hit it; the idea is that you spray damage everywhere, and some of it is bound to hit some enemies.
So...will a Magnus always catch dodgy enemies before they can leap out of the way, or does it just have a higher success rate with hitting them?
I'll go out on a limb and say "always". I mean, if you have good aim (or auto-targeting on), and you don't fire just as a Tier 3 wolver is teleporting, then Callahan pretty much always hits.
Use blitz needle. Stand at the furthest range where blitz can reach and release the blitz charge. Devilites and gremlim will be hit and heavily damaged. They will be interrupted if not dead, so you can recover from the charge. For T3 wolf, release the blitz charge with a wall behind your back, and all the wolves will queue up to be killed. T2 wolf is a bit harder to hit because T2 wolf might sidestep you, usually you can release the charge at point blank and they won't have the time to escape.
With blitzes, charges are the way to go. But you can time regular attacks just as they telegraph their attack, as they can't burrow after they've begun their attack animation.
However, on devils (wolvers/gremlins hinder this somewhat with type strength) I honestly find alch-switching works nicely. Bullets are constant enough that you'll gunna hit stuff regardless, and ricochets help in hitting things (since you're not really aiming anyways) and dem status effex <3
Thanks for the advice! I'll try to apply it once I reach tier 2 and have to deal with these dodgy foes
The problem with using charge shots on Devilites and Wolvers is that you tend to not have that big of an opening to charge your weapon when facing them. Devilites will throw chairs in your face and Wolvers will teleport behind you.
Magnus -> Callahan is meant to deal with dodgy enemies. I wouldn't suggest anything else.
for wolvers, the easiest thing in the world to do is to use your body as bait. since they have a charge-up animation, wait till you see that, side step just a little bit and release a charge-up attack on them. you can easily destroy hordes of wolvers even in t3 with pretty much no effort. you can use absolutely any gun for this technique - i don't have many guns so i end up using elemental alchemers, but i pretty much never get hurt and you wont either!
gremlins tend to dodge backwards, so be aware of where their backs are facing. you can easily herd groups of gremlins in the corner where they cant escape from a blind barrage of bullets. keep in mind for this herding to work, it is best to use the gun-swap technique to dish out as many bullets as u can. my preferred weapon for this is the shadowtech line with the blaster line as back up. magnus also works well and would probably be a better partner to shadowtech if you do not wish to herd them.
devilites are pretty dangerous to gunners. if you have a pulsar line weapon, i'd say this is the easiest way of dealing with them. you simply fire one bullet to the left of the target, and one to the right, and re-position and do it again. the rapid dodge of the devilites will actually lead them to run right into one or both of the bullets. all you need to do is keep a good distance. magnus and blaster lines will also work, but keep in mind you do not want to ever be surrounded by devilites even with tons of shadow defense. in all likelihood, you will not be able to kill enough of them in time to greatly decrease the threat of damage. therefore you might consider walking up to devilites (after they have thrown their attack) and shield bump them in clusters so you know where their missiles will come from, and blindly rain a ton of shells on that general direction. it's also a good idea to keep up some of the crystal blocks as cover.
Dodging is my fortune!
Since I use a pepperbox, I spray some bullets is the general direction of the wolvers, some may hit, some may not.
But as they teleport, they either go further away, or right behind me, in which case I hit them with a sword or a gun from close range, rinse, repeat.
Always worked for me :D (although I suppose it wouldn't work against wolvers and gremlins since they have resistance to elemental).
It shoots floating bombs that shock people to make shooting them even simpler...
With prior knights, I've played enough lockdown matches to know what a pulsar is. Man, those things are annoying! Now that I think about it, though, a magnus would also be a good PvP gun...
The Polaris does elemental, but the Supernova does normal making it usable on all three types about the same.
For the record, all three of these enemies are also very succeptible to Dark Briar Barrage, assuming you're willing to use a bomb instead.
For devilites, if there's ANY pit bosses around, Callahan will be less useful than Blitz Needle. You can blitz a pit boss in one charge, whereas Callahan will take forever to kill one.
But, Batabii... if I blitz needle I'm frozen and being hit by donuts, snowballs, and chairs. If I callahan I'm still dodging, I believe. Or at least frozen and being battered for less time (not that I have either gun, but I have an autogun-line gun or two anyways, but I'm only 5* on hail/umbra/argent). Usually I kill all the dangerous devilites first, then shield-bump the pit bosses out of range of their yesmen and kill all but the last one, then kill all the yesmen, then kill the last pit boss after he turns into a ... whatever the basic purple devilite is called. All my 5* guns suck for devilites, but the idea of using anything from the autogun line against devilites is kind of horrifying... unless it's right after shivermisting them. That could be sweet. Anyway I'm inclined to build Callahan as my next gun rather than anything autogun-line, and largely with devilites in mind.
Obviously blitz isn't going to help if you're mobbed. What you do is hang back and take them on one by one. For an arena-type situation, clearly callahan will be more useful.
That's what I thought and it's the locked room battles that drive me crazy with them. Thanks for clarifying. I don't know about the OP, but I'm definitely planning on a Callahan now. And maybe a Dark Briar Barrage too.
Magnus and Blaster lines are good for hitting dodgy enemies, since they have fast-moving bullets; the Magnus also interrupts soft-bodied enemies, knocking them down as a bonus (although its charge is pretty pants). Alternatively, drown it in so many bullets they can't dodge by using the Blitz lines.
Try not to pull off too many shots at once, since this triggers their dodging animations. In addition, you may want to herd enemies towards corners or walls to help restrict their movement.
