A silly question about Tiers

While I'm no new recruit, it seems like this subforum would be the best place to ask this question, in case anyone else finds themselves thinking something similar.

I jumped into Spiral Knights way too quickly when I first started, and consequently, find myself sitting here wondering what the true difference between stars and tiers are.
I've gone believing this whole time that Tiers represented if you had all 1* equipment, or all 2*, 3*, etc., but just found out only yesterday that there are only three tiers, not five.
The wiki serves no information directly about stars or tiers (or at least not on its own page).
Now I'm hopelessly lost at trying to find at what point your equipment is bumped up a tier (relative to stars).

Tier 1 is 0* to 1*
Tier 2 is 2* to 3*
Tier 3 is 4* to 5*

Does this help?

Yeah

Yes it did, but where exactly does it say any of that?

To get Tier 2 access, you

To get Tier 2 access, you need 2* and above gears.
To get Tier 3 access, you need 4* and above gears.

strata, not tiers

It's often better to think about the Clockworks in terms of strata, not tiers.

There are six strata, numbered 1-6. Strata 1 and 2 constitute Tier 1. Strata 3 and 4 constitute Tier 2. Strata 5 and 6 constitute Tier 3.

Similarly, there are six star levels, numbered 0-5. You use N-star equipment on Stratum N+1. For example, you use 3-star equipment on Stratum 4.

Edit: Thanks for pointing out my typo, Bluencool. It's fixed now.

.

bopp is right, but to make it clear: there is no tier 4, he meant strata 4. don't get confused.

the second strata of a tier is always much harder than the first strata. there is a great increase in enemy HP and you will progress very slowly with your 2* stuff. however, the 2* fire haze is an exception if used against jellies, it can be even better than some 3* weapons.

conclusion: 2*-3* is considered as T2, but 2* is more like T1.5, the real T2 weapons are 3* weapons.

"The wiki serves no information directly about stars or tiers (or at least not on its own page)."

You were looking on the wrong place then >.> I just tried to put "tier" on the bar and....

http://wiki.spiralknights.com/Tier#Tiers

Tier 1
Tier 1 is accessible to all knights who have reached Haven (i.e. completed Crossing the Chasm), and runs from depth 0 (Party Lobby) to depth 7, the last level before Moorcroft Manor. It covers 8 depths.
The Clockwork Terminal is at depth 4, a place where knights may change their equipment, recover their health, and purchase supplies.
It is designed to be playable using 0-1 star equipment; higher-rated equipment receives a reduction in effectiveness.

Tier 2
The second tier runs from Moorcroft Manor, through 9 levels down to Emberlight, the town of Gremlin Outcasts.
The monsters in Tier 2 are more difficult to defeat than those found in Tier 1, being stronger, faster, and having more health than their Tier 1 counterparts. They also have a wider range of attacks available to them.
Clockwork Terminal: Depth 13.
IEquipment rating: 2-3 star.

Tier 3
The final tier is where only the most experienced knights should go. This tier encompasses the area from Emberlight (d18) down to the Core.
The monsters in Tier 3 are far more dangerous, as apart from having increased stats all-round, they also have a full range of attacks and behaviors. Powerful beings such as Lord Vanaduke can be found dwelling within this tier.
Clockwork Terminal: Depth 23.
IEquipment rating: 4-5 star.

I think the in-game help

I think the in-game help pages also go over the recommended weapons for each tier, but it used to be a bit more obvious before the missions system, when the only way to get to the next tier was by talking to the Warden standing at the gates in Moorcraft Manor/Emberlight. Those Wardens are still there, but now they redirect you to the Hall of Heroes missions, so the connection is a bit less clear.

Well that's certainly odd, because I had searched up the word tier, as well as any other forms of the word (plural, misspelled) on the wiki and came up with nothing but guild pages. I just did the same search now, and received exactly the same results that you showed, so I'm not sure how I didn't find it earlier. Maybe because I was searching on mobile?

Thanks anyways, this definitely clears up a lot of things I misinterpreted previously.
