Spiral Knights are so far space-knights. But are they supposed to be robots, people, or some kind of alien? You never really see their face, because it is darkened or hidden under a helmet.
What are we?
Automatons? I thought we always looked like living toys. Some peices are cloth with stuffing, others are solid. I dunno.
I like to imagine we're sort of paranormal beings who possess armor in order to do physical things, which is why when you look inside our helmets it's completely dark except for our eyes.
This also explains the odd mechanical tidbits of our armor that light up with our favorite colors.
Energy is the paranormal energy required to do anything that is very energy-consuming, such as going down into the clockworks to fight, get us back on our feet when we "die", etc.
...maybe I'm over-thinking this.
Of course, various things ruin this idea. Like open-faced helmets having a visible nose, cloth changing color as well, the spirits in blade of the fallen being unable to "possess" armor like we do, etc.
We are neither Autobot or Decepticon because we lack the ability to transform. Our generation was intended to be midget soldiers too small for the enemy to aim while having significant offense abilities in the battlefield as well as being powered by a regenerating Energon source which draws from enemies to power themselves for ammunition and to energize excess exertion. When we were finished building our heads were big easy targets, the Energon vampirism failed and we had to use a completely different form of energy which was impossible to recreate with Cybertronian technology. The only thing we did right was being able to use overpowered weaponry. They set up a space bridge and shot us out into space, conveniently landing us on the planet of Isora which was theorized to have the necessary energy design we needed to thrive as opposed to destroying us and recycling the materials. When we regrouped we tried to remember what happened before regaining consciousness on the alien planet but our memories were all fried by the bridging process. On Isora we subconsciously created cities and machines resembling those of our previous home planet and had a similar struggle for power where certain light frequencies attributed us our individual personal colors. The two opposite sides of the spectrum, violet and red (ultraviolet, infrared) held the greatest conflict whereas those closer to the center (green and yellow) were more peaceful. Eventually we united under a knight without color, the first of us to have ever been constructed by Cybertronian hands: Ozlo. He united us under a single rule without bias or resentment to any and gave our people a leader who only sought the satisfaction of others. Under his rule we sought to revitalize the planet after our war had left it scarred but lacked the energy as we had squandered most of it building and destroying against each other, so Ozlo devised the plan to seek energy sources on other planets to feed our starving planet.
Or at least this is what I think we are.
I should stick to fanfiction.
Wow, no one got the song reference
I'm really starting to lose my faith in this community
What is a knight? A miserable pile of secrets.
On a certain side, this is true, since we are never were able to find out what exactaly we are, but not all of us are miserable.
We are neither Autobot or Decepticon because we lack the ability to transform.
wat.
Even Nick himself said that when you equip a different Helmet, it literally cuts your head off and replaces it.
That's not transforming?
@Lightyourfire:
Not the song reference, but I came up with a great metaphor as back-up. Can't lose too much faith in the community. I mean, lose too much faith in the community you cannot.

Spiral Knights are NOT robots, because Construct UVs do not deal extra damage to other knights in Lockdown.
Actually, the UVs would technically deal extra damage if we could regard knights like that, considering their suits are referred to as 'Power Armour'.
Argument=Invalid.
Part robot and machine, some where around our species line of evolution knights started to get mechanical like trait that could be passed throughout the generations of the spiral order.
Look in Spiralspy at the Mining Hat on any character.
They have noses, OK?
See also: Recon-cloaking Skolver caps give you a nose as well, plus recon and Circuit Breaker helm gives you a MOHAWK.
TL;DR Spiral Knights have noses.
We have LED eye balls.
When you go recon cloaked, you can see a ninja like body with 2 lit eyes. Slightly fuzzy. like LEDs.
Naw, we ain't robots!
We're more or less a gaseous essence housed inside a suit of armor. Do we transform? Yes and no. Not in the sense of "we replace our heads" or going all "autobots" on everything, but more like we sorta shift to fill in the helmet or armor, not being a tangible being. LED's in our heads? I doubt it. Haven't yall ever seen glowing gas? Automatons could be another possibility. After all, where did we come from? Ever seen Spiralian children running around in haven? Though that would have to be some serious AI to give everyone a personality and whatnot. So again, a gaseous essence makes the most sense here.
I thought we eventually came to the conclusion that we were Daleks?
I mean... we're trying to wipe out every other sentient life form on the planet. The Strangers are only with us because they're cowering in abject fear. Either that or they're spies along with the snipes, which are actually trying to kill us all.
Conspiracy theories abound.
There are various things in the game that imply that the knights are biological (with a really large chance of having various mechanical implants) creatures with power suits, not to mention that according to the vitasuit plus description, we have hair, and according to various other items, they say that we have teeth, and we need to eat, drink and sleep. And have to wear socks and other stuff too.
@aureate, the knights are actually looking for resources and other valuable stuff, while also documenting the data from the planets they visit, we are only fighting the only race of intelligent (and mostly sane) beings because they are hostile. The strangers are friendly/neutral. And the snipes are innocent until we find proof that they are controlling the swarm, germilins, strangers, and all the rest, and using us in a deathwatch-ish game of theirs.
@immortus, about the thing of the spiralian children, first, if you consider that this is a military/scientific expedition, having children on-board of the skylark would be a ridiculous idea (unless they were born there.). Sure, there were probably a few new spiralians that were born on cradle during the time the knights were stuck there. But i don't really know if its reasonable to let children run around alone in a city in the middle of a hostile planet, altought it doesn't make sense to keep them locked away ALL the time, so we can't get to a reasonable conclusion.
another proof that there robots. even though i also believe they have some biological brain of some sort.
evidence: CE REVIVES. People revive with Energy....ENERGY. energy that can be swapped from a live player to one that is down. When someone dies, they run out of energy. another gamer comes along and gives half his energy to the other. THink of a super fast recharge time.
Nov 16, 2011. CE rev blast is introduced. http://media.spiralknights.com/images/blogimages/v0/id/59.jpeg Energy/Battery Juice revives a down player.
If Icorians were 100% live things, revives would involve Dark Rituals.
@Canine-Vladmir: I wouldn't really call defibrillators "dark rituals."
Knights:
- eat things and have teeth. From the Rocky Core description: "A delicious gummy treat with an impenetrable rocky shell. More than a few teeth have been lost by knights attempting to get at the gooey interior." They eat enough that Biscotti, the "head chef," exists. There's also this: http://threepanelsoul.com/2011/06/07/on-survival/
- breathe and have hair. From the Vitasuit Deluxe description: "High-tech mail that provides the wearer with myriad medical boons, including bonus health, glossier hair, and fresher breath."
Spiral Knights are just people in powered suits. Think space marines, but cuter.
Probably organic, if the description of the Vitasuit Plus is anything to go by. Robots don't have hair or breath.
