Mac Users: DO NOT upgrade to Oracle's Java 7. Doing so will prevent you from launching Spiral Knights.

If you are using Mac to play Spiral Knights, then the chances are that you are still running the old and outdated Java 6. But the rub is that the outdated Java will cause you to run the game at lower or choppy framerate with frequent lags which will become progressively worse with each update in the game.

Emailing the SK tech support team won't do you much good because they haven't been able to resolve the issue yet.

As far as I know, ALL of the Mac users in the Spiral Knights community are currently running Java 6. And they are all experiencing severe lag issues that grows progressively worse.

Ugh, I wish java 7 worked on

Ugh, I wish java 7 worked on Mac. Pretty much nothing uses it even though it exists, and everything requires using [crappy] Java 6. Such a pain in the [rump].

Hmm I think I'm running Java

Hmm I think I'm running Java 7 on mountain lion. However inside my library I can see Java 6 files...I've heard that apple's security fix can cause that to occur, where both 6 and 7 are installed simultaneously. This might explain why I often have trouble launching SK at all. Interesting...

Same here!

I'm running on Windows, recently updated the Java, and it won't work at all (not just SK). It seems to be a major issue here.

NOTE: It doesn't work for Windows too!

Great news!

I found out that the latest Java is the problematic one. What I did was to simply uninstall the latest Java, so that there's only the old Java left. Then, I managed get into SK without a problem.

But I'm not a Mac user, so I apologise for not being able to give specific instructions.

Not happening

I'm a Mac user, and I've got Java 7 installed, but I can switch to using Java 6 through Terminal commands.

Problem is, Spiral Knights still doesn't work and hasn't been working for the past THREE MONTHS.
I've mailed support and sent log files, etc. and they just said that since a majority of Mac users used old Java versions, it'd be best to keep as is since a fix couldn't be done.

Basically, Spiral Knights just isn't going to ever work on newer Mac machines. Period.
No way in hell they'll fix it if it's already been 3 months.

@Snowdusk

Snowdusk what are you talking about I've always been running the latest Java on Windows 7 and I have never ever had a single problem with it not being able to start. I might have got some issues with it but those are about something completely different. (I'm running both Steam version and browser version fine)

My solution on Mountain Lion

I was having this issue as well, and was able to get Spiral Knights running on Mountain Lion/Steam. In case others want to try.

Download the 1.6 java from http://apple-java-for-mac.en.softonic.com/mac Install That. You don't need to uninstall the newer Java 7. In my case, it installed into /Library/Java/Home Check via /Library/Java/Home/bin/java -version and make sure it prints 1.6

cd to /Users/yourname/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/Spiral Knights
edit run.sh
after the first line (#!/bin/sh), add the following
export JAVA_HOME=/Library/Java/Home
export PATH=/Library/Java/Home/bin:$PATH

save, and start spiral knights through steam.
