Well, so i just installed steam yesterday and im wondering;
Is it possible for a steam-bound account to still log into the web browser game? Or is it only for the steam game window?
Are there any advantages/disadvantages?
What's different about the game?
Can I buy CE from the main SK site still?
Anything else about steam that i might not know?(besides the fact that you can have mic's on it)

Thanks

You can't log into the web client with a steam account, however not vice versa.
Advantages are ability to use steam wallet, there is a promo of getting a steam mask if you invite your friend, and Voice chat.
You can't buy CE from the main SK site, only through steam wallet.

Only get Steam if you have

Only get Steam if you have friends who also have Steam and if you're going to play other Steam games too, don't just convert to Steam if this is the only game that you will have on it and if you won't have any friends on that stupid Steam crap, cause you'll end up paying more on Steam you purchase energy because of that wallet shiz. Be it 5 cents more or 10$ more.

I believe that is widely untrue. Both energy costs the same.

HOWEVER, there has been some steam promos, such as autumn sale, which gave a 75% discount to OCH.

"I believe that is widely untrue. Both energy costs the same."

I believe he's referring to the fact that STeam Wallet allows you to put in cash at specific increments, so you'll have 'waste cash' sitting in your steam wallet you couldn't spend because you had to put in $5 for the $3.20 purchase.

Or something like that. Had a friend discuss that issue with me, so that's how I know of it.

@ Marz

Steam often has sales. Got Crimson Hammer for 1.48$

It's not a bad choice but Steam and SK does get buggy sometimes and have trouble logging in (last only couple of minutes)

As for the "steam crap". There is none, you have a forum on Steam for trading too, it can be helpful

Steam is wonderful and it made me discover Spiral Knights

Edit: @ Psycho: SK fixed this, if you want to buy something at 9,95$, you can buy only the 9,95$ so you don't have the couple cents in your wallet like before

Problems to using steam for SK: If steam or your computer crashes, that's extra time you have to spend booting up steam before you can run Spiral Knights. You can't multibox (Not a problem for most people) and you can never unbind the account from steam, if you ever decide to get rid of steam for personal reasons (I've heard of multiple people wanting to do this)

Steam also uses a small portion of the network, and if you're looking to optimize your network to the maximum efficiency (if you don't have an "excellent" internet connection and/or speed) you'll want to close down all programs that utilize the internet while running Spiral Knights to keep lag to a minimum.

@Psychodestroyer

The Steam wallet has a minimum value; when adding funds to the wallet, you have to put at least $5 in. For any value above $5, you are presented with the option to just add the exact amount of cash you need.

The only time it's actually annoying is if I want to buy the $2.40 CE pack. Which I never do.

@Hexzyle

I'm not sure how fast other people load Steam, but mine loads in less than a minute. Surely the wait can't be so terrible that it lessens the amount of time you are able to spend playing the game.

Assuming multibox means what I think it means (running multiple instances of the game simultaneously for extra profit), then that is absolutely wrong. There is absolutely nothing stopping you from doing it. You can't run two Steam accounts at the same time, but you can just download the client straight from spiralknights.com and use a normal, non-steam account alongside your Steam account.

It's true that Steam uses up bandwidth. Personally, it's never been enough to cause any kind of noticeable network lag, but I understand that there are many people who have a slower connection than me. But even then, if those people are trying to play online games, they would really just be better off upgrading their internet connection.

@Everyone Else

The way I see it, there's little to no reason not to bind to Steam. With Steam, voice chat becomes integrated into the game, the CE store becomes totally hassle-free (if you've saved your purchase info on Steam), you get to use the Steam overlay in-game (which is great for doing things like quickly checking up on your forum posts or reading the wiki), and you automatically log into Spiral Knights.

The only reasons I can think of to decide not to bind to Steam is if you have trouble running Steam on your computer, or your internet connection is awful and you can't handle running Steam and Spiral Knights simultaneously.

Pros: more secure (because GM has two sets of server log to deduce whether or not your account has been hacked), Steam trades, deals and other bonuses.

Cons: your SK goes down with Steam, Steam overlay may slowdown some computers. If you disable the overlay you lose the ability to make purchases with real life money.

TL ; DR. Do you care if Steam goes down? If so, don't bind it.

Pro-tip!

Open up a client of SK -> Click the login via facebook option -> It'll take you to the login page for this website -> Click the login via Steam option -> You're now logged in as your Steam Account on a non-steam version of the client.

It's sad that even until today, the community has to rely on workaround to bypass Steam limitation.

Pretty obvious to me where the responsibility should lie.

@Eltia: It's honestly like 3 clicks. Workaround? Yeah sure. Is it cumbersome? Unless you have really slow internet it's only a few seconds longer. If you have a slow internet, then you'd probably have more problems than login times when playing SK.

You don't need the overlay to do anything at all. You can just add funds to the Steam wallet directly from the Steam client.

@Shamala

Because steam users have some kind of "benefit" lets say OCH, you can get OCH as "F2P" with Steam because you can trade your CE for OCH expansion with the steam trade, thing that Spiral Client dont have even they said theyre working on a system to make OCH trade by the spiral client but so far they didnt it. and to add more fire to that, Spiral Client frm Asian servers can buy OCH with Ce thing that OOO havent done here.

Basically as Steam Client you can trade your Ce for stuff or get CE for your stuff (or buy games with your CE). so thats why they hate Steam, because steam clients have a few benefits.

You guys ought to stop

You guys ought to stop spreading misinformation around, you're creating false impressions.

  • Yes, you can still login to the game using the client via the Facebook workaround
  • You get access to Steam trading, Steam Voice Chat, secure login, the ability to get OCH as a F2P, and access to any sales OOO does via Steam
  • The game is largely identical
  • You very much can still buy CE from the main site, without using Steam Wallet. You can access the page from the support menu.
