Honestly, I've lost count of the number of 'How do I win this game' people who make these threads. Seriously, there must be at least fifty threads asking for the quickest way to ear cr.

The easiest way to get crowns is to log on, craft something, sell it, wait 22 hours, repeat.
Now for most crowns vs time spent? Boss runs. Snarbolax for tier 1, Royal Jelly Palace and/or Ironclaw Munitions Factory for tier 2, and Firestorm Citadel for tier 3.

Okay, but seriously, the easiest way to get crowns is to buy energy and trade it for crowns. However, that requires dollars (or euros, or yen, or whatever else your currency is), which is also used for buying things like shelter, food, coffee, and electricity.
The best way, crowns-per-Mist-point wise, is to run through levels; boss levels usually pay out the most crowns, and also drop tokens that can be traded for other rewards. Tier 1 only has the Snarbolax, whose payout is lame compared to the Tier 2 levels. The Royal Jelly (Royal Jelly Palace) and Roarmulus Twins (Ironclaw Munitions Factory) are the tier 2 bosses; Royal Jelly Palace gives a bit more crowns per run and is generally easier (no rockets and no Shock), but the Ironclaw Munitions Factory still gives out enough crowns to make a small profit buying energy, and the tokens can be used to purchase Schemer Scraps, which can be sold on the Auction House for around 20000 to 25000 crowns. Keep in mind that all three above bosses drop tokens that can be used to get powerful gear; even the Snarbolax's Frumious Fangs can be traded for the Snarble Barb (which upgrades into a fast Piercing-damage sword), the Bristling Buckler (which upgrades into the only five-star shield with a weapon bonus), or the Spine Cone (which upgrades into one of the most useful damage bombs in the game).
Unfortunately the Clockworks don't pay out as much as repeated boss runs; however, you can still turn a profit in Tier 3 and might even come out ahead in Tier 2. If you go into the Clockworks, look for the Arena levels; they're tough, but clearing all three rooms will get you lots of Crowns. Some recipes only available at Basil can be sold for a high price (including the Kilowatt Pulsar line, the Sealed Sword upgrades, the Snarble Barb/Bristling Buckler upgrades, and the Crest of Almire, among others) but this is a bit risky.
Tier 3 is the big time. Once you can fight Vanaduke, you can make a lot of crowns and rack up Almirian Seals. A common method of converting these to cash is buying Ancient Plate Armor and selling it to a vendor for 30000 crowns; however, you may wish to get a Blackened Crest (which upgrades into the Crest of Almire, a nice Shadow-defense shield with Fire and Shock resistance), a Fang of Vog (basically a slow Leviathan blade, with lots of Fire; its Charge Attack is the best part about it) or a Dark Ember (which can be used to make Firestorm Citadel Guild Trophies, or sold on the Auction House for others who want to make said trophies). Or you might want to use the Ancient Plate Armor (it's bulky and slows you down, and has no specialized defense, but has large HP bonuses and Normal damage will not touch it). This is your call.

Right now the easiest way to get crowns is to run the 3 arenas at the end of the Silver Rook gate. You net 8k+ on those 3 levels alone. Also in general......... do a lot of danger rooms
