i think it would be nice if you can turn on and off multi player mode so it would be nice if a brown out happens and you still have ur laptop and play it :P
spiral knights solo mode (no internet just solo) ????
Not to mention I'd also oppose an offline version, considering OOO will likely not make it because then people would want no energy in the game considering it's offline and there will be free fun.
The only reason anyone will play online after that is for when they want cr and to socialize. Not everyone has friends worth playing with, but more people have time worth wasting.
I think this is a very good idea with certain tweaks. Prior to the mission system there was not enough content to really make a 'single-player' mode, but now it might be possible. Here is my take:
- Single player knights are stored locally, and cannot be used in multiplayer. This is similar to how Diablo II worked, with 'official' characters stored server-side on Realms.
- The mission system effectively acts as a progression of quests which form the storyline of the game. Therefore, in singleplayer mode, Rank missions would not be replayable.
- Energy would occur as monster drops, or simply eliminate it altogether. The rank missions should be paced for casual completion in two or three weeks, or less if the player decides to grind more.
- 'Prestige' missions would be like a Spiral Classifieds section. There would be three missions available at any given time, offering crown/energy/mat rewards; each time you completed a mission, another one would take its place. Danger missions would also have a chance of spawning in place of the usual prestige missions; the missions would also automatically turn over on a daily basis.
- Certain recipes and items would be unobtainable- for example, Shadow Lairs and Lockdown-related items, and accessories.
- Single player knights that finish the rank missions can restart the series, retaining their equipment.
This single-player mode would be like a highly detailed demo; most people would blaze through it in a week or two, get hooked and come to the multiplayer mode. They can still go back to their tricked out single player knight when they run out of energy, but they won't be able to access some of the niftier features available in multiplayer. This would also allow multiplayer newbies to come in with fairly advanced knowledge of PvE, reducing the number of failparties. It would also allow current flunkies to hone their skills a little without the restrictive energy barrier.
Of course, the largest barrier to singleplayer is probably the time required to repackage elements into a singleplayer mode. It is also possible that OOO does want people to burn energy, mist or otherwise, in order to get any progression or even practice. Either way, I wouldn't be to hopeful about single player SK in the near future.
For OOO to earn money, they get you to buy energy, to sell to Da People (that would include me) for crowns, that would be use for buying other stuff, that would be sold by people (like me), that would buy more energy so as to continue playing. Tis' is da economy. Welcome to Spiral Knights.
Truth to the above, this means OOO wouldn't bother making a single player version, 'less they made you pay for it.
Problem number one, and also problem three thousand eight hundred and ninety two, this game is mainly, solely and only server-sided, so basically all inputs in the game client will be sent to the server to synchronize. Any crowns, heat, etc. earned is worked out in the server. This is mainly due to preventing hacks (packet editing) and etc. (GMs, I'm pretty sure this is not a speculation)
Basically you might have an offline version, but just that you won't earn any crowns/heat/energy...
