How much would Spiral Knights last ?

I asked myself today, how much time would Spiral Knights last until the game is dead and closed ? My friend gave it 2 years, and I give it 5 years before it disappears.
How much time do you think it would ?
/sends farewells to all of his SK friends....
/salute

NUUUUUUUUUU, this game still better exist when I'm 21 (I'm only 13 right now). Spiral Knights will live on!!! Spiral Knights 万岁! (That means, long live Spiral Knights, not a very good translation XD)

Even if it would be excessive: As soon as PSO2 hits around, Sega will remove their support from this game. PSO2 is said to open beta in spring, so 2-3 months, maybe a bit more until open beta changes to "released" status.

@Zaffy is Luffy-kun :
Thanks for the information, it helps alot in understanding how does MMOs work. But I have a question : Let's say that after 6 years, SK will die. How would that be ? Will they just close servers ? Or just delete the game from our library ( On Steam only ) ? I would like to know how an MMO dies.
@Xxpineapple :
I don't want SK to die too, I wish it lasts till I am 30 and can spend LOADZ OF CASHZ ON DA GAME !!!!
Nippon Banzai Spiralo Knightaeh !!! ( The correct spelling :P )

Well it actually depends really on the consumer. MMOGs are generally free to play, but lets consumers pay for certain privileges. If the game don't satisfy the consumers, the consumers may stop playing, and thus paying. To keep the game interesting, game developers must create new content to keep the people satisfied, and sometimes willing to pay.
When the game starts to lose money, the game developers may decide to shut down the game, or attempt a rescue. If shall the "rescue" be unsuccessful and result in bankruptcy, they will permanently shut it down, or till another game company purchases the rights in an attempt to resurrect the game.
In this case, the game is owned by Sega, and if Sega shall see that the game is not worth maintaining, they can shut it down without warning. OOO has no jurisdiction over this.

@Zaffy is Luffy-kun :
Oh no....I don't want this game to die D:
Is there anything that we can do "other than paying" that could save the game from dying ?
And a small question : Would the forums close if the game is shutdown ?

Let me phrase the answer in a form of a question
Will you put in your effort to create and maintain something for free?
The world works this way, sadly. People need money to feed their children and entertain them by buying games (that loop)
So "other than paying", you can't save the game from dying, especially if it is an online game where you need to pay for servers to run it.
According to some sources, OOO used the Drupal software (by use, i mean pay to use) to create this forum. So yeah, the forums will probably be shut down. It is anyway and otherwise useless to keep it if the game is removed.

Why? Because that's why.

Predicting the future is always hard. But this does not prevent people from making prediction.
So my take is, not any time soon. I think SK has done a few things right. e.g. art works and music. The energy model is innovative (but not perfect). I don't think the SK IP (intellectual property) would die out. If the game does close down, SK will survive in another form.
The game itself. Well, I think a lot have been said about this. There are praises and there are criticism, and the juries are out there.
I also think that people should look further. Instead of viewing SK as an individual title, think of it as a franchise. Then SK (the game) makes more sense because it's used to jump start a franchise. And a franchise has more than one titles.

Im hoping that Chris comes back to the game. That way, Spiral Knights will never die because of money reasons...

i dont think the game would die quickly but OOO it just focusing now on New players since every new content its for them and nothing for old players.
since they expect new players pay for energy to get quickly 5 stars since the game resctrictions. they dont need anymore old players. my only porblem its they just have been giving us cosmetic after cosmetic and nothing good like big content and its seems this year would be the same as the previous one, more and more cosmetic 0 Real content.
my biggest concern its that most of the money they win its going towards Dr Who Worlds since theyre SOOOOOOOOOOOO SKILLED to make PUZZLES GAMES rather than an awesome game like spiral knights, its like they are out of ideas for this game and the forum have some neat and awesome ideas for new levels and gear. How sad OOO. How sad. even you can notice theyre run out of ideas for bosses because most of new bosses dont have Complexes patterns as the old bosses, and they depends on infinite respawning enemies since the boss its so easy. i dont complain about guild hall updates was a neat detail, but after we filled it with everything we wanted, we returned to the same problem we have now: Now What to do?.
without real NEW CONTENT prolly the game will be here maybe 2 o 3 years... since all we got its new cosmetics and cosmetics and cosmetics and umm what im forgetting? oh and cosmetics. The game really cry for "NEW CONTENT PLEASE PLEASE" but its seems this 2013 its going to be another empty year without new things more than pets and more cosmetics -.- prolly 2014 will have new levels i guess.
But thats just my view point
awesome new updates coming louds of ppl will play= money for SK ^^
i hope more stuff comes up like new enemies than vanaduke, he too old to get killed by my hands...

Guys, stop trying to be fortune tellers. The Mayans' prophecy failed, and I don't see why yours would be any different.
And what's with all the fortune tellers trying to prophesize the end of the world (or in this case, end of the game)? Do you want it to end?

they should also not lose Rubyeclipse, Cocosnake and Laylla.

I think Zaffy explained it the best in his first comment. The content is very short PvE wise so if and only if OOO decides to keep working on this game, they will eventually have to open the core (just an option) and finish the missions. After that, they'll have to go from there without increasing any confusion with game mechanics and such. Right now, this game is very simplistic compared to other games (TF2, Dota2, etc.)
I give this game 5-6 more years

@Shidara
People are just speculating, not actually trying to predict the game's doomsday.
As for my prediction, I don't think it will last less than 1 year and more than 3-5 in the community side. If they keep updating the game without spoiling it, and most importantly, find a way to make the CE system less abusive (main reason why new players don't stay for longer than just a couple of minutes), it can live for pretty long, maybe more than WOW.

I think Spiral Knights is a hard one to predict. There are a lot of things people want in SK that is done excellently in your Guild Wars, and your World of Warcrafts and your Runescapes and your other crap. The markets are better, there are more costumes. Things are more balanced. There are more classes. Tanking is actually a viable thing. More strategy. Better graphics. More and better story. The financial system is more lenient. There are more players. Maybe they don't restart once per day like clockwork and have seperate server reboots when they actually update something. They lag less.
Spiral Knights has one thing no MMO I've tried has: It's fun.
The mechanics feel good. When I swing my horribly balanced Triglav, hitting monsters for much less damage than I could be doing with other weapons, the animations feel crunchy. The knockback feels just right. When I charge a weapon, hear the charge-tink and unleash the true potential of my weapon it feels great. When I swing a sword at a lumber and bring my shield up just in time to be sent halfway across the room with a red bubble, I feel like I really just clanked a wooden robot with a giant sword and then tanked a goddamn hit with my iron slab of a shield.
It feels like I'm fighting.
I've tried a lot of other MMOs, even action-MMOs and none of them have captured this basic thing. It feels like their development starting with setting up a server and having entities move around in it. Maybe before anything, they sat down and balanced a bunch of classes on paper and wrote a bunch of server-code Maybe they moved around and fought things in the game thinking "this isn't fun, but I'm sure it will be when we add arcane fireballs and the ability to summon demon dogs". Spiral Knights feels like the development started by making a little knight whack things with a sword and not moving past that stage until that felt like a fun thing to do.
Spiral Knights has a monopoly on fun game mechanics in MMOs. I think they'll need a direct competitor before they keel over. I hope it, at least.

At least I hope it lasts until I'm 20. Just 5 more years. >_<
It will keep being on until:
-Running out of ideas
-Too much content in the game and very complicated
-Most people decide to quit the company
-Less money
-Greed and bored

When will this thread die?
jelly-skelly Was just Kidding!

Why i think spiral knights is heading in the right direction they just dont have the playerbase to sustain itself. Eventually lots more people will hit the end game and it will become to boring for them. If they want to last longer they have to create lots of endgame content. Giving people goals to reach like Vanaduke and so on will only further keep players invested in this game. If they maintain their current pace with delivering updates this is all but assured. If they want to stick around gotta stay ahead of your players. Advertising this game more would also help their cause.

Spiral Knights is unique. That's why it'll have a much longer lifetime than something like Spirit Tales, for example.

Guess you didn't search enough action MMO games, I play other games right now - with more lenient and fair stamina systems - and I have played games where action is both exhilarating and "feels", and you can even rip enemies in two with a kick in some of them, for example, for an added kick (bad joke). That game (again, one of the many) specifically just decided to close in less than 5 days after a major update adding a class etc. With no reason! After watching such a thing - and another old superhero MMO which closed "just cause" - this game, to me, if Sega doesn't feel it is in their interests or if it will bite their own market away, it will just disappear with a handwave.
This game NEEDS expansion, but it won't just have it. OOO also may be perfectly cool with this, they have that Doctor Who game. The reason, most likely, is that OOO can't have more staff, it is not their fault either.
And this game is unique maybe in Steam. The MMO market has lots of action MMOs. Lots.
I hope I am wrong. I hope we have lots of new levels ready to go after a year of NOTHING for the free player that wasn't rehashed or limited content.

I'll be the first to admit I don't search for MMOs a lot. Feel free to mention any crunchy, feely ones you think I might like.

i agree more with Aumir Spiral Knights need more expansions of the game, lately spiral its only about new updates of costumes. Some of them only recolors of already existing armors or made by parts by reused materials (impostoclaus) there few things like tricorne, shogun and medieval helmet that are kinda "new".
Last year were only OCH, (which honestly besides being DLC, you only run it for the weapons and prolly 3 times for the mask material. and then to help someone to make the mask too. but after that, no one play again OCH after they got what they need) i really start thinking if OOO saw this because well i dont find it hard as other says (someone says its harder than vana) but i just find OCH a bit annoying and boring (i think just watch a lot of gray and black colors plus the music but for some reason reminds me batman, make OCH for me really boring).
Then prestige mission which OOO said we going to get rewards for our prestige. so... i only did my prestige until i got 45k prestige then i stopped from do runs just for prestige. the badge its pretty nice but not something to make me back to do prestige again. (maybe i can regret this later but i dont going to complain anyway). Also (without count C42 and LoA) the prestige boss are far simple if we compare them with the other bosses (vanaduke, roarmulus twins etc). Prestige bosses are always static... so nothing complex and depends alot of respawning enemies or invencible monsters. which only them make the boss give a bit of fight but if it werent by the respawning enemies prestige bosses would be just a joke. So in this side we can see that OOO really lost interest to make fun boss fights (i really like Maulos design, also i like how the boss in ghost in machine do it intro, but after you know how they attack... they really are only impressive by design.. but not to be considered as boss at least for me...).
Guild halls update i would agree was really nice, because we can customize our guilds in the way we like. but after you got everything you want what you can do? maybe host events but only that... but anyways was a good update at least since it helps to keep down the CE prices. (sadly the guild training hall dont let players to attack them each other with their weapons.. at least that would be fun.. but no...)
Now we going to have pets update, which will take them 6 months (prolly they going to work Full body and soul for 5 months on Dr Who Worlds MMO and the last month they going to work on pets which they going to be buggy due the last hour work they did on them and we going to have server restarts yay!) prolly a 4 or 3 missions with pets to introduce them for the players and Ta Ta thats our Spiral Knights for 2013 (i really hope to be wrong because i really like this game)
its sad how a thread which was done and done and done and redone by users got priority (pets) while threads with +1 to their good ideas are just left behind, maybe if we post the same idea over and over and over about new weapons, armors, and bosses would make them work on them... Maybe.
another boring year in spiral knights doing and doing and doing the same levels over and over and over and over again... well lets see if they put a good promo on the chinese new year.. and not a recolored... chroma tail

Hm...Never knew.
Its market was looking pretty miserable. They cut down on instances, and then merged the two servers though. Which is probably gonna help the game to survive for a bit longer.
And guess what? Its an English version of an Asian game that has a seperate server along with delayed updates! Sounds familiar :/

@Xxdragneel
I am a papaya, thank you very much >.>
@Everyone
Soo.......................to keep the game alive...............we should buy tons of energy? :3

I think we need something like another lockdown? Maybe an expansion pack for something like lockdown, just a new game with new maps and gameplay for say 5$. In my opinion, I would play that after I finished the game... resulting in a longer life span for SK. I predict 5-6 years or more (hopefully).

Just an educated prediction that I don't feel like explaining.
If, for whatever reason, this game goes down in flames, I SINCERELY hope Three Rings will take some time and release the Spiral Knights client as a singleplayer game that someone can play on their own with Energy at a set price like, say, 5,000 crowns.
There have been times when I was looking for something to play when I was internet-less and I found myself missing Spiral Knights.
I hope Three Rings makes this a reality someday.
Naturally MMOGs like these will keep adding content till it overflows and it gets too complicated to continue playing. Cosmetics deal nothing to shortening a game's lifespan. Game mechanics updates and new content that affects damage, defense and etc. are the type of cigarettes you'd give to the game. A soothing relaxing effect, but a shorter life. Yes, pets are considered cigarettes.
They deal major updates (cosmetics exclusive) every 3-6 months or so, so I'd give it a 4-6 years of life remaining.
