The NPC's name is Wegner. When you enter the Arcade from the Town Square, Wegner stands just to your east. He explains the role of minerals in one of the earliest missions.

I'm always ranting, but why no one pays attention to the tutorials when you reach haven or talk to NPCs before making these questions?
That answers like 80% of the threads made here.

Yes. In fact, the point of the missions (as I understand them) was to give new players a framework for learning the game. That's why there are so many "talking" missions about "remember that beasts and slimes inflict piercing!", etc.

I dare you to sell all of that and see how many crowns you get. I've also saved up. Currently at 400 crystals per...crystal. I feel too lazy to watch the loading screen.

I used to have 10k of them
I got alot of crowns. Now, I also auto sell after 10k. Soon I will show 100k

Well...
Before my most recent auto-sell, I had around 3k worth of minerals. This netted me around 4k~ crowns. Not bad, not bad at all...
Another use for the minerals is to TRY and open the core, but finding the right combination is very unlikely (if the devs even implemented at all)

The tutorial mission doesn't really explain it all...while it does answer the OPs direct question, it specifically vague when it comes to how those minerals affect the gate and the levels. It leaves a lot out. I would guess that most people just pick a gate at random (or whichever one is closest) and auto sell.

I go through all the gates
I go through all the gates and check to see which ones are giving more for different colors. It's usually just 1-2 cr difference, but that's per mineral.

But the tutorial leads you to Wegner (the crystal-related NPC), all it takes is to talk to him again. He DOES tell you how minerals affects the maps ;)
Some new players just can't be bothered by reading tutorials.

Well I rather save them for prestige although the mineral come faster than mineral prestige mission...
3-4 cr per mineral is just TOO LOW
Yup I want more as everyone want more too!
In the arcade, at the very top right. There are bins where you can deposit the crystals in exchange for a small amount of crowns. Depending on the color of crystals you put in, it affects the gate that appears. There is an NPC you can speak to at the arcade for more information.
