The shield's description says: "A superior shield forged from sun silver. Then meaning of the crest on its face has been lost to time."
To me since it looks like a combo of the energy icon and the crowns icon, I think it means you have came from a wealthy family or clan ect.
As Luguiru said, it's likely just royalty, but the design of it somewhat resembles the Energy symbol, with a crown replacing the typical line in the center.
EDIT: It could also refer to crowns, as in currency crowns.
I think it symbolizes a certain family which was big in the gold mining, banking, or crown minting business. I can't think of much that would point to a particular answer. On a similar note, does anyone know what the Gremlin symbol represents?
The shield was being sold in a shop. The "msyterious symbol" is just a price tag that wasnt removed.

Well its obviously the same as the mark on the crowns that we use all day every day, but rather than "This shield is money!" I think it is meant to say something along the lines of "There is some higher significance to the object known as crowns that you don't know about."
My theory would be that crowns, coming from all of the mutated animals/gremlins/etc that we find in the clockworks, were part of the "original cradle" before it clashed with everything. Ironmight plate shield would likewise have arisen from this, long ago.
It is very important to note that the "Plate shield" is NOT the "Spiral Plate Shield" whereas the armor variants are "Spiral" in nature. Then, if you examine the items, and see their descriptions, you will see that the "Spiral" armor/helmet set are being upgraded entirely by being simply given a power source, wheras the "Plate Shield" is upgraded via "refinishing" to have the power source. Likewise, the "Spiral" armors are not broken at 2*, whereas the plate shield is in a somewhat broken state. This indicates that the knights are recreating it rather than bringing it with them, and then adding their own technology which they devised largely in part from examining the tech on cradle. Nor are there any "spiral order themed colours" on the plate shield, whereas they are used largely in the spiral plate armor/helm.

Its a good shield. Jelly is a waste of crowns, but Ironmight can tank more hits than barbarous thorn shield, and is easily the best defensive normal+piercing shield.
I would think that it represents the Crystal Energy → Crown conversion and vice versa. Thus symbolicly showing that energy can be bought with crowns. Quite simple, but perhaps deeper than we may realize.
