January 16 Update - Discussion

Today's release notes can be found here: http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/72772

I agree with you there, Melonfish; what is the reasoning behind this change? It probably isn't to fix an 'exploit' as you can still ask a friend what is on the list (even if it is slightly more inconvenient). The only logical reason I can think of is that newer players may be confused as to why they cannot purchase a recipe after joining too late (that and those that are buying recipes won't have to see the ones they have already bought). This would probably save them some disappointment (and possibly raging). Then again, these are just my thoughts and I may not be making any sense at all.

Meteorological winter has not ended yet in the Northern Hemisphere; its coldest month, January, is not even half over. So why has the Haven been thawed?

I would assume that they only wanted to keep the Winter aesthetics around for the festive season, which is now over. Even though January may be the coldest month (it's definitely the only month so far that there has been any frost where I live - yes I said frost and not snow), it still feels right to end the Winter theme now. People from the Southern Hemisphere play this game and it is considered to be their Summer at this time - some may find it a little strange. Also, I'm pretty sure that some people like how Haven appears normally.
Just my way of trying to find a logical answer for these kinds of things. The snow was nice while it lasted but it's good to have the old Haven back.

They are thawing it out because next month is valentines, even a bush would know that. Owaitimabush

You know... the recipe thing has been like that for a while. As long as I can remember, you have to join 2 floors before Basil to get access to his recipes (D11 for T2 and D21 for T3 if memory serves). It was to prevent one person from getting all the way to basil, and just inviting an unlimited number of friends who would buy all the recipes they wanted, and then leave.

I think you may have misunderstood, Traevelliath. You see, the actual 'system' has not changed. It's simply that you now won't see recipes on the list if you are not eligible to purchase them. Previously there would be the number 0 next to the recipe to indicate this.

I'm not sure if they're removing it, or just putting the '0' back. It's been gone for a while, believe it or not.

Yeah, kinda irritating.
Uhmm, scenario time!
I bought a twisted targe recipe from Basil on my first run. Later on my second run, I couldn't buy the same twisted targe recipe. This resets until the next day. O.o is this some anti-exploit system?
A "0" proves much better to see, instead of clicking on the recipe and realize it's out of stock... D:
I have some concerns about the incoming denial of browsing through Basil's recipes when you join a team by the end of the third stratum.
What is the motive behind it? How is it an issue to fix? Is the ability to browse them and ask to a friend or stranger if they could buy that recipe for that person really considered an exploit to bury? I'm actually more curious about it than it affects me.
